Well, lencica good question. Currently avalanche chance on Viševnik is small. But it's like asking if accident possible on road. Possible, but we all drive anyway. That's it.

What is current avalanche danger on Viševnik (regarding tragic event on Vogel)?

How is it with snow sloughing?

On this part yesterday there were no signs indicating sloughing, nor were traces of old avalanches visible. Of course, caution is never too much!!

Has anyone been to Viševnik in the last few days? What are the conditions like?

I was up on Saturday, it was sinking to the ass. Given that the snow has been settling and transforming this week, it might be better. I also did a snow profile which showed fairly uniform bonded snow and it barely moved from the base. (that was of course at the profile site - a bit below ridge start.) In short, recommend skis or at least snowshoes. And be careful!

Could one get there without crampons?

Given the upcoming weather (i.e. frost) and exposure I assume the track will ice up and thus very dangerous without crampons. I advise against it, Viševnik in ice is extremely dangerous.

Yeah, what about you? Without crampons? Yeah, me without pants too... what nonsense!

Today with friend on Viševnik, no crowds, great (later conditions worsened drastically: snow, wind, clouds, cold...), nice day use. Wanted to summit MDV too, but turned back 100m before top due to conditions (slab snow, sugar, instability). To Viševnik trampled, ski tracks pulled. From V. to MDV footprints, windblown, icy, warn about "sugary" traverses. Crampons needed from summit to saddle, thus ice axe too. Quite some people today there without winter gear (on that I won't comment, it's fooling). Safe steps and much enjoyment in (safe) mountains!

geolog 79, was anything seen, were there any people on VDV? Did anyone ski there?
|
|

yes, I counted 8 of them, mostly ski tourers... on MDV none, it was too dangerous...

yeah we met... hehe, super you're introducing kids to hiking in mountains like that, even in winter. now just ice tools and climbing crampons and go... good luck!

Viševnik, yes. Winter classic, both touring and hiking. Sadly still too many people going (even to Viševnik) without proper gear. My motto: better too much than too little, e.g. yesterday no rope to belay friend on those traverses, otherwise conditions can (as yesterday) worsen drastically in 5 mins. Many lives taken in mountains this year already. Viševnik still remains and will remain popular spot. And that's good. Best regards.

Has anyone been up there in the last few days? What are the conditions? Especially interested in avalanche danger. Also thinking about Debela peč, is it better/worse there?
