Miri, that's not true, not a single one of Sabina's photos has the hribi.net logo.

Yes, Sabina's photos already have signature or watermark, but I don't know why there's no hribi.net logo anywhere, like with Matej, where it looks really ugly if both are there, watermark and logo.

I remembered that around 10 Sept 2012 a Slovak disappeared on Matajur. I'm wondering if anyone knows what happened next? Did they find him?

What is the path like to Matajur from the direction of Kobarid or higher-lying houses, as it seems the mountain conditions will be unfavorable for the weekend.

Today on Matajur another beautiful day. The sun was pleasantly warming and except at the top and on the ridge where it was slightly windy, most of the path was almost windless.

I start the ascent in the village Matajur. Up to here the road is completely dry, from the village to the roadblock above the village, there is a little snow on the road.

To Rifugio Pelizzo I go along the road and shortcuts that cut the turns.
From the roadblock onwards the road is thickly covered with soft snow. A nice packed trail leads along the road. A bit below Rifugio Pelizzo the amount of snow increases even more, the trail gets lost in countless steps and zigzags of skiers.
At the observatory I turn to the path to Fonte Skrila. The path is not trodden, but with snowshoes it goes slowly. Without snowshoes you'd sink at least 80 cm. At the alpine pasture at Fonte Skrila I follow tracks of a touring skier leading along the usual path to the saddle where the old path from Avsa joins. The old path is untouched, very much snow, without snowshoes you'd sink to your butt.
So much snow that you can't see where the cart track goes at all. I climb to the saddle where the usual path from Avsa joins. It is trodden, further on the ridge ski tracks too. On this part of the path much less snow already, as mostly blown to hard base.
From the summit I continue to Dom na Matajuru, where I look at the steep path coming from Maršinska planina. Significantly less snow than 14 days ago, many places blown to grass.
Alone I go on untrodden path towards the lakelet. On the slope I spot zigzags of a skier who skied to the huts on the pasture and back to Dom na Matajuru. Also at the lakelet huge soft snow and except skier's tracks pristine white.
To the start of Maršinska planina I take it a bit lower than the usual path, which due to huge snow amount can't be guessed, otherwise gentle slopes have gained dangerous incline.

When I join the path from village Matajur, the snow amount suddenly visibly decreases, as most blown off southern slopes. The path from village Matajur is well snowshoed and mostly doesn't sink even without snowshoes.

Today snow almost to Čedad, road clear to Matajur village1

the path begins to ascend towards Fonte Skrila7
critical section of the path - short crossing due to snow on the very steep slope just before Fonte Skrila, right under the path of the Skrila torrent bed8
it would be better to bypass the critical point above the bushes, because the terrain flattens a bit and there is less risk of slipping into the torrent bed if the soft snow collapses9

Mountain lover,

weather forecast for these areas is most accurate at:

http://www.osmer.fvg.it/

They never claim more than 80% chance of being right, nor less than 60%.
Forecast usually available in Slovenian too - choose language top right.

According to forecasts, very nice on Monday.

On Saturday (16.02.) my colleague and I set off from Avsa towards Matajur in the morning. First part through the forest was trampled, hardly sinking. After exiting the forest to the end of Pl. Idrsko we were constantly up to our asses in snow. At the junction to Mrzli vrh the path got much better, snow mostly held our weight. From the ridge onwards much less snow, base much harder. On the way back it softened, more sinking. We bypassed the pasture via Mrzli vrh. Path from Avsa to pasture well trampled due to many visitors, from pasture to Matajur summit less.
Weather fantastic, views too. Road to Avsa completely dry. Only mistake was no snowshoes. But we gained fitness velik nasmeh
Towards pl. Idrsko it sank quite a bit, but the view was unique.1

Finally on the ridge, Krn in the back.6
On the summit we enjoyed the panorama.7
On the return we took a detour via Mrzli vrh, which was a good decision. Sinking was much less than across the alpine pasture.8

Xena,

probably it was me. Wasn't paying attention who parked behind me, focused on the path ahead. World is small anyway, I'm on Matajur very often at least in winter, so our paths will surely cross again.

Yesterday we went a bit more south. From Matajur village up a nicely trampled path towards pasture "Tam za tlakom". Then the path steeper. On snowshoe tracks in the morning no sinking, walking a real pleasure. Soon spotted "Dom na Matajure", stopped a bit and viewed Benečija. Summit a bit colder due to light wind. Church shelter handy. From viewpoint surrounding hills like on palm. On top some known ski tourers and boarders with loyal four-legged companions mežikanje Descended towards pasture "Na lazeh", then road and shortcuts back to start. Nice circular tour in warm winter-spring sun. Despite lots of recent snow, conditions great, no snowshoes needed.

Yesterday calling from Sabotina, today morning on webcam all shining in sun. So to question where today, only one answer.
When I arrive at Matajur village, sun struggles through hazy clouds. Towards summit greyer.

To Maršinska planina nice smoothed compact track, new snow just a centimeter. Since direct paths don't attract me, to Dom na Matajure via pond. Lots of snow here (though at least 20 cm less than week ago) quite soft. Snowshoes OK.
From Dom na Matajure to summit mostly compact snow. From summit to Rifugio Pelizzo windcrusted no sinking, lower softer on hard base.
Road still lots of snow but track well packed.

Tomorrow all different, snowing here already.

From the path the day still promises much1

Today on Matajur real paradise. Few people but all with snowshoes. Usual paths well trampled, otherwise south-facing snow, along ridge compact.

Start from Matajur village on road and shortcuts to Rifugio Pelizzo, then turn to Fonte Skrila. Path to Fonte Skrila not trampled but not problematic. Try to follow lower marked trail. Still huge snow here, no way without snowshoes. Who knows this path don't take upper shortcut, saw several small avalanches. Shortcut crosses steep slopes very slippery.

After crossing pasture above Fonte Skrila join old path from Livk, snowshoe tracks come (not necessarily from Idrska planina, maybe from Mašera path). Follow to ridge where snowshoe track from usual Avsa path joins.

On summit notice snowshoe tracks also on north ridge. Wouldn't go there myself for a while, too risky slipping and slopes avalanche-prone.

Head to Dom na Matajure then to Maršinska planina past pond. Here too some snowshoe tracks leading to saddle under north ridge.
As usual still lots snow here, further on south slopes to Matajur village grass showing in places. Also direct path from Maršinska to Dom na Matajure little snow, wind blows it off quick. From Rifugio Gosnach to village still at least 0.5m snow, so no mud worry lower path for days.

Tomorrow even nicer day coming, Matajur calls! And don't forget short sleeves.

After two weeks and some interim snowing and rain on Matajur nothing much new.

From Matajur village road still snowy. Lower part just cm snow but enough to ski. With altitude snow increases. Few bends below Rifugio Pelizzo turn under road down to torrent bed. Cross bed straight up hill over Ledina, at top onto old Livk path. Snow from frozen to softer but well transformed. Snowshoes held super.
On old Livk path about 20-30cm new soft snow, but predecessor's ski track helps. Skier coming opposite says went to Matajur from Avsa on usual path with larger group hikers. Returned on old path, same group behind him, so now both Avsa paths well trampled.

From summit back over Maršinska planina past pond then past Rifugio Gosnach to Matajur village. Maršinska still lots snow, to Gosnach less but nicely compact, surface lightly frozen. Lower path some sections almost bare, bit mud.
New snowing below 1000m expected to cover patches.

Today summit so cold even camera stopped. Few lone flakes fell.
