Please, knowledgeable ones, for info if the path over Idrijska planina to Mrzli vrh after yesterday's snowfall is already somewhat trodden. Thanks

Hi,

has anyone been last week on Matajur from Avsa or Livek?
Trodden path, icy?
like
Čmrljček 76. 03. 2022 14:22:48
Some photos from village Avsa to Matajur on Friday 04.03.
Path well trodden, not icy, some dry sections in between, towards the top snow quite hard, but crampons not needed. Still need caution on the path... Return via Mrzli and Srednji vrh...

Today was at the summit and didn't find the stamp. Maybe someone knows where it is?

The stamp was attached to a rock by the summit last year, in the middle of the markings. Probably still in the same spot.nasmeh

The stamp is on a stone near the summit itself. I also looked for it for about a minute nasmeh

From the Italian side you can drive by car to the hut, trodden. It was windy, but I knew and dressed accordingly. Half an hour on the summit in the wind, I wasn't cold. Valley green, even cabbage growing in gardensvelik nasmeh while in Polhograjcih half a meter of snow, cold, windy, icyeek.

Matej, is anything trodden towards Avsa?

Matej, I totally agree with the comment. Primorska after all. We don't miss the white shit.

White shit is very welcome if you have fairly genuine contact with nature and like it as is and accept it as such. Not just for approaches, ice climbing and touring skiing, mainly so nature rests a bit, and those animals that mostly sleep through winter finally find peace and take a catnap or two nasmeh

Yesterday for the third time on Matajur, but on a completely different path. This time from the Italian sidenasmeh. We started a little above the village of Matajur, headed towards the Gosgnach hut or alpine pasture, which we hadn't heard of before, then towards Maršinska planina and its little lake. The path there at this time was all icy, likewise the lake. From there we headed towards the saddle between Velika Glava and Matajur, then onwards along the north or NW ridge to the top of Matajur. This ridge really gave us trouble, as the path was quite well covered with completely hard snow and ice, so it's quite adrenaline-fueled at this time. Definitely not there without crampons, well, microspikes with caution suffice.

We returned first to the Dom na Matajure hut, where we really liked the surroundings. Benches were arranged around the hut, so it must be very pleasant when it's open. From here we went to the Pelizzo hut and past the astronomical observatory, from where we descended to the starting point a bit via shortcuts and less on the road.

Very nice path, extremely scenic along the entire length. Julian Alps, with Krn group and Kanin group, Jalovec and Mangart, are just part of the view, then there are also Carnics, Dolomites, even Veliki Klek was visible, and views to the Friulian plain, in the distance the sparkling sea. Both satisfied!

Yesterday I concluded my trilogy of short mountain breaks with ascent via Via Palmi to Matajur and descent to Sužid.nasmeh
This ascent is steep, 16 sections with cable, until the exit it runs mostly in morning shade.
Cold drink at Dom na Matajure, where payment is voluntary contribution, then to the top and descent to Sužid, from Planina Svino in pleasant shade to valley heat.jezik
Unfortunately heat haze from the previous day remained on the photos.jezen

So we also went to Matajur on Sunday, starting at Rifugio Pelizzo hut (to there through Baška grapa and Livek). Sunny, cool breeze, lots of people. We took the short 45 min path-very suitable for kids (when not hot). Wow, when you suddenly spot Krn summit. And then wow for everything else.

We visited Matajur only twice, first from Slovenia, this time from Italy. This variant was something new for us, moreover the drive from home is no longer than to the starting point on the Slovenian side. We parked in Sovodnje, confluence of four rivers in this remote valley. To our surprise, the village inn was open, which we certainly didn't expect at such an early hour nasmeh.

Continuation counterclockwise. Along local unmarked paths we climbed to the first village Tarčmun, a bit later to Mašere. Here the first markings appeared. Path 736A took us to some kind of mule track, where marking 736 took over. So until the top, only that almost road in the summit part becomes a normal trail. No exposures, but due to iciness we still put on crampons.

Beautiful views called for a longer stop, later we started descending on 749 towards Dom pod Matajure. We didn't stop here, but continued towards Malga Gosgnach alpine pasture, Hlevišče saddle, Sv. Jur saddle, Sv. Kocjan saddle and came out in the village Gorenj Barnas. From here only descent to the starting point, where we arrived in the last breaths of the sun. The valley is narrow and remote, so no abundance of sunlight in this winter time. Ahead of us was only the return home, mostly on comfortable highway. More in photo story ...

Coordinates of starting point (Sovodnje): 46.1577308N, 13.5315186E
We park in Sovodnja, locally Sauodnja. The Holy Family illuminates the darkness.1
At the parking lot there is also a sign for today's goal, but it is still a long way to it.2
To avoid running out of strength, we turn into the village inn for snacks :)3
Then we cross one of the four rivers that form Sovodenj and hurry up the slope.4
After some asphalt we turn onto a more pleasant unmarked forest path.5
First real view of the Matajur slopes. Surprisingly no snow visible despite the height.6
Now we are walking in the sun and gratefully welcoming the warmth.7
The forest road is partly macadam, partly concrete, everywhere thickly covered with leaves.8
All around are numerous villages clinging high on the slopes. We will also visit some.9
First we go through Tarčmun.10
Then comes Mašera, which even has some museum exhibits.11
In the middle of the village we turn right onto path 736A. These are also our first markings today.12
The poorly trodden trail turns directly above the scenic village.13
The continuation proceeds over interesting slabs that blend seamlessly with the surroundings.14
We even meet two Italian hikers, the only ones from this direction.15
We emerge onto a cross road and from there follow the 736 signs.16
We walk along an overgrown road that reminds of a military mule track.17
No trace of morning frost. Soon we'll be in full summer gear.18
Astronomical observatory and Rif. Pelizzo hut. Most Matajur conquerors start at this location.19
Another look towards the summit. Obviously some snow there will be...20
Snow cover starts at about 1400 m, but in the lower part it poses no problems.21
Even higher up the sun has done its job and snow patches can be easily avoided.22
He led it up by the horns and leads it down by the horns :)23
Oops, the sun together with frost has also provided icy sections. Small crampons come in very handy.24
Matajur and the Cristo Redentore church25
Stolov ridge looks almost pyramidal from this side. It is about 30 km away, mostly uncomfortable paths through tall grasses.26
Southern side of the Julian Alps. Not much snow, but it is certainly hard and icy.27
We bid farewell to panoramic Matajur …28
We descend to the opposite side, this time on Italian 749. Snow here is softer.29
Hut on Matajur. The glazed terrace is unlocked and an excellent choice for a break.30
Our direction, there is no other path …31
Finally we meet two Slovenians. Time for a chat :)32
We continue. The day is short and the shadows are getting longer …33
Sv. Jurij saddle. All signs are bilingual, including our diacritics.34
We emerge from the forest into the sleepy village of Gorenj Barnas.35
No one anywhere, but shutters are open here and there. Obviously there is still life here.36
View back …37
The final descent to the starting point follows. This is supposedly path 755, but no signs or markers anywhere.38
Sovodenj in sight …39
The sun is departing, shadow already embracing the first houses.40
At the starting point. The loop is completed.41
Track of the hiked route. 24 km and 1500 m of elevation gain accumulated.42
