Despite a very late start (at 9.30) from Avsa today without crampons I wouldn't have seen the summit. Icy snow starts even below Idrska planina and goes to the junction for Svino. Further on a bit of fresh snow, which just makes walking easier. View on Tolmin mountains, south Julians, Karnics and even Dolomite giants around noon surprisingly good. Southern side in sea of fog to the hut on Matajur

Yesterday, because of the ice, I preferred to take the old path. Phenomenal views from the top though.

Yes, how many beautiful corners of our little country reveal themselves when you can't go on ferratas and abroad. Among them was Matajur, which I had long planned anyway.

Up from Svino over Svinjska nasmeh planina and then along the ridge to the summit. On the whole path only one (presumed) Italian on the summit, who didn't even greet back (don't know if the Slovenian greeting bothered him or he was so absorbed in his drone which he was flying around) and we stayed at a safe distance!

Descent to Maršinska planina (yes, to the Italian side ccccc...), snow was still causing some trouble and yes, a bit dangerous in such conditions. Further on the Italian side everything closed of course (both the Slovenian hut and the It. hut), no living soul anywhere.

Back via the Italian side over planina Glava and back to Slovenia to the junction of the path from Avse, from there still about half an hour of re-ascent to the junction where I arrived at the start from Svinska planina and then of course back to Svino.

Hey, if I had known that the road which this path joins shortly after crossing the border goes directly upwards to the junction, I would have saved about half an hour of descent and re-ascent.

When the border opens, of course also Via Palma!

Yesterday's visit to Matajur definitely one of the nicest so far. Lots of snow, road and parking which was almost too small, well arranged. Rest in picture.....

On Sunday from Avše to Matajur, the path was slightly icy in the lower part (small crampons enough), towards the top hard base and enough grip, no crampons needed. No stamp in the summit logbox.

Given all the warnings, my babe and I yesterday chose a more relaxed tour. Almost unbelievable that we did Matajur in short sleeves mid-February. Up and down. Quite a few mountaineers at the top, no crampons needed. Despite the seemingly easy tour, from Svino village near Kobarid where we started, almost 1400m elevation gain and 15km. Interesting tour.nasmehmežikanje

Yesterday wonderful day on Matajur. Parked a bit before Svino village. In the village there are only two markings sufficient to direct us to the forest, where from the little bridge onwards they are very frequent. The forest section drags on, cart track well crushed and very steep. Mule track in continuation also steep. In this part met only one female hiker who was already returning.

On Svinska planina lots of livestock, otherwise the pasture looks quite abandoned. Path onwards to junction with usual path from Avsa through high and thorny grasses, full of rocky terrain like on Karst, otherwise always marked. Stopped several times looking back at ridges rising above Soča valley. Very scenic.

Day was hot, only on ridge a little wind blew. In this part also found tasty ripe blueberries. Summit wonderful viewpoint. Some visitors but not too many. Also nice panels with named mountain signs. nasmeh

After a few meters of gravel the trail turns uphill between the huts on the pasture. Well, we read the description poorly and continued for about 15 minutes on gravel towards Idrska planina and met4
a lot of cattle5
We turned back and headed straight uphill through the indistinct grassy-rocky valley6

Thanks for the nice words nasmeh.
Yes, it's true. I have already visited this pleasant summit several times at full moon and have things well studied. Nevertheless, each time it's wonderful and that's why I like to return to the kingdom of Matajur velik nasmeh.

Afternoon from Avsa to Matajur, very long path, in forest already trodden track. Further something in between track and holes, on Mrzli vrh ridge blown bare. Further on descent it repeats track/holes and on ridge below Matajur again blown bare. Up there probably mostly Italians who came shorter way. Back same path, only half the way I ran with headlamp.

To avoid avalanches we head to safer summit. From Avsa over Srednji and Mrzli vrh to Matajur. Weather ideal, enough snow, path trodden, recommend at least microspikes for easier descent.

Quick visit to this wonderful viewpoint.

Path from Avsa BP, in forest icy, higher up from Srednji vrh onwards snow packed and hard, alternating also with some dry patches. Microspikes stayed in backpack, caution not superfluous.

At summit noticed some names on panorama boards wrong (e.g. Chiavals from this side cannot be before Zuc dal Borom, and visibility allowed to see it live well).

Didn't know until now how Antelao stands out by its prominence and is really distinctly visible.

Wonderful quick trip.

LP,
Ben
