Matajur

Sadly, Sabina and I missed each other... but I'll tell about conditions on the "Old path" from the parking above Avsa village. To the Matajur summit is well trodden, either left or right from the junction above Idrska planina. Much more snow than on the Italian side, but doesn't hinder walking, as it's well trodden.

@ksena
Tomorrow or day after tomorrow planning to go up, can you tell how long it took you up? And is the whole path well trodden so dog can go too?
Thx.

@bojan79 - I went on skis and it took me 1h.45 to the top..it went really fast today thanks to the skis. On foot, I take the old path to Matajur, starting above Avsa village, about 2 hours. Depends on many things mežikanje, especially photography.
The path to the top is well trodden, I also had my two dogs with me, who according to all "rules" don't belong in snow, let alone mountains - greyhounds nasmehnasmeh, so yours won't have problems either. Good luck.

Yeah mine isn't for such conditions either (miniature pinscher) but when it sees snow it's full throttle up and down nasmeh

I was up there on Sunday, 27.01. this month. Slovenian side, start a bit above Avsa. Path is nicely trodden and no wallowing through deep snow. Great views from the top, on the way back I went a bit off path; whoever decides for ski touring from the top won't regret, even on the road there's plenty snow and the ski descent would surely last more than half hour, at a relaxed pace...

Today to Matajur from Matajur. Road from Pelizzo hut is trodden, also grassy slopes above and below the road...and lots of sledders. South slopes of Matajur are wind-packed, hard, icy, so crampons aren't superfluous. At least small ones. Sunny, great views, finally met Sabina and David nasmeh. Nice afternoon spent.

Today we went to Matajur on the path they recommended to me last time at the Slovenian hut. We always parked in Montemaggiore-Matajur village, but right at the first bend we turned left. Initially the trail goes through forest, then across the white, along the ridge to the Slovenian hut. Track was already made, proper snow, quite deep below, up on the ridge hard base, and it was blowing quite strong too. Not our habit, but this time we had lunch just below the top. At the top we met Ksenija nasmeh and her super dog, chatted a bit, then happily skied down first on powder, then on harder base, on the road it's always like on a track. A bit too crowded down at the village. Overall: super day!

It's Matajur in the picture.
Probably, but what are the left and right mountains in the background1

Yes. Majestic pyramidal mountain ruling over Friulian plain and rising above Soča valley.
Of course I was up there today too. At the start in Matajur village I count 38 cars, but on the path to the top I don't meet a single mountaineer.
I head to Maršinska planina and further to the lake, from there to Dom na Matajure hut.
From the start initially well-trodden snowshoe path turns uphill at the white house. Alone I continue to Rifugio Gosnach, where I see only one set of tracks. Without snowshoes, sinking up to 1 m. With snowshoes it somehow went. Higher up more wind-packed, at the start of Maršinska planina again over 1 m soft snow. Untouched white and beautiful views pull me towards the lake. Unlike last time, I don't continue to the saddle and north ridge, but head to Dom na Matajure. From there just short gentle ascent to the top. Just below the top again lots of drifted snow. Down to the valley on the former ski slope to Rifugio Pelizzo and continue on the road to Matajur village. Admiring beautiful views colored by sunset. Our first-time poster would say: what a fantastic day!

SuzanaM, I'm interested how you removed the hribi.net logo from the bottom right corner of the picture?

Thanks

I can see the logo. Maybe you have a minimized window (in that case the description under the pictures is not visible either).

Ljubitelj gora, the mountains behind Matajur are the Dolomites.
The ridge in the front left is Kolovrat, the snow-covered peak bottom right is in my opinion Mrzli vrh above Pretovč pasture. Similar perspective as in your picture is from Vogla. Where was the photo taken?

I got a bit confused, Sabina's pictures don't have the hribi.net logo, I don't know why.

I don't know what you meant by that watermark, but Sabina despite the signature doesn't have the hribi.net logozmeden She does have a similar signature in the bottom right corner of the photo, like Matej.
