Today we took our white dog Happi to Matajur. We drove by car almost to Koča Pelizzo. There is still quite some snow, although grassy patches are increasing. Some were skiing or boarding from the top, where it was quite windy.

Circular variant from Svino village near Kobarid-Matajur-descent to Avsa village. Both paths marked. In Avsa at first major bend of main road turn left to forest path.
Forest paths-6km-back to tour start in Svino village. This path not marked. Marked on PZS map.
Sunday, 22.5.2011-walking time 7 hours.

The sky stayed cloudy, so I didn't push into the high mountains and it was a slightly longer walk to Matajur - circular variant - quite nice morning recreation. From the village Avsa first to Idrska planina, then along the old path to the Italian side, to the top and along the ridge back to Idrska planina and to the starting point. Weather held up, the top even sunned a bit before 11.00, back it was already quite scorching. Luckily only to the forest.

unfortunately the shadows along the path collapse into themselves

This weekend after quite a few plan changes came the Primorska-Saturday Matajur from Avsa, where everything is o.k. except the Slovenian route section (from the fork to Beneška), where 20 min. mud battle follows (at least Saturday it was like that) so šminkerski gojzarji drop out.

On Wednesday 13.7. I went to Matajur for the first time. Really pleasant shorter trip in slightly cloudy weather along the western Slovenian border. The path was completely fine, true it hasn't rained for quite some time nasmeh

The weather was ideal for the hills, the path to Matajur is not strenuous, on the way you can go to Mrzli vrh too

Yesterday afternoon we hopped up to Matajur. We drove by car to the Pelizzo hut, which will be open until mid-November. At the top we met only two Italians. We enjoyed some autumn nature and gathered some beneficial energies..... nasmeh

On Monday there was already a sort of little "first ascent" climb from the border crossing Robič straight up to the Matajur summit, in the central gully also some short sections of pure II grade difficulty.

I needed to see how the freshly fallen snow looks like and the choice was Matajur. I started the trail from the village Avsa, then to Idrska planina, where a bit more substantial whiteness began. From there along the old path to the Italian side and along the ridge to the church. Most snow was around 1300 m, most of course in drifts (up to the knees), then with altitude the thickness of the snow cover dropped sharply. The wind had done its part. No people, on the way back I met a couple of hikers who approached the summit from the Slovenian side. That's where I was returning. Sunny day with patches of light cloudiness, on top quite cold and windy.

Ksena, we were exchanging glances. You from Matajur towards Krn, we from Krn towards Matajur. Initially we planned to go to Matajur, but curiosity and desire for Krn won. The day was wonderful despite the wind and you took beautiful pictures nasmeh

, Matajur is also my favorite little hill, reachable in all conditions. LP and happy trails.

I park below Idrska planina, continue on the Slovenian side, snow on top is little, under 10 cm. Walking itself causes no big problems, but occasionally icy ground, so caution is not amiss. Descent via Beneška path, partly on Italian side.

Matajur was lit by the sun today around 13h....despite cloudiness lingering over Soča till then, the hill offered great views to sea and far to N, W and E. Little snow, about 5 cm powder on hard and icy base, which doesn't hinder comfortable walk. Few visitors, met two on top, couple more returning to Avsa village. Today's day and year ended with beautiful sunset.
