Today is a wonderful sunny day, but cold. We drive along the Soča Valley to the Idrsko settlement, where we turn left and continue steeply uphill, after 9 km arrive in Livek, from there another approx. 2 km to the Avsa hamlet where we park the car. Air temperature -10 degrees. Goal is Matajur 1642 m, also border mountain Slovenia-Italy. Path on gravel road, markers well visible. To 1150 m dry, then snow frozen and base very hard. Path past Idrska planina at 1245 m. Left of planina Mrzli vrh 1358 m highest point of Slovenian part. After 1.5 h walk Slovenian side reach goal. On Matajur top quite windy, temp -16 degrees. From here really wonderful views on Kobarid basin, Kanin range, Krn, Mangart and Jalovec and to Slovenian Benečija. To SW view not great, sea not nicely visible. After photo session and snack put on crampons, base very hard ice underneath. Thus equipped safely descend to start. This was my today's gift to myself for personal holiday.

Parking at the spot shown in the 1st picture is not appropriate, as we obstruct locals in their work.
There is an arranged parking lot just a few meters ahead!

Thanks for the nice wishes. It's true, but that day they weren't working, checked. 300 m ahead is the parking lot.

Today I went to Matajur on a slightly different path, starting point (former) CP Robič and up 724 Via Palma. Quite steep (emphasis on quite and steep velik nasmeh), in places need to climb rocks and pull on roots. Quite strenuous, as need to overcome more than 1000 vertical meters before route joins path 725 from village Štupca/Stupiza.
Advise against Palma in wet and also not best for descent (with dog wouldn't dare)mežikanje
Markings sufficient, only upper part sparse and need to watch well. Path is and isn't, half the route is more marked pathless terrain.

From Palma exit to summit still approx. one hour, ascent total around 4 hours, descent to Stupizza and walk road to CP Robič another 4 hours.

Today a trip to Matajur from Avsa. Towards the summit there is still quite some wet snow, the path is also quite muddy. But since temperatures will also be quite high in the coming days, it will disappear quickly. Don't forget sunscreen, the sun is already quite strong. The views are gorgeous, especially to Krn.

My first post on hribi.net forum. Warm greetings to everyone. On Friday, 27.4. I was with the family on Matajur. Twenty-first time. Since 31.12.2009. Before that I had only heard about Matajur...zadrega
On the way back I drove over a stone and damaged the car. To the point of undrivability.eek After more than two hours of waiting in Mašer, a tow truck and replacement vehicle rescued us.nasmeh I hope mechanic Jože will get our "little mouse" back in shape, because Matajur calls again...nasmeh

Last weekend was perfect for a mountain visit... also the lower ones that with their lower altitude surpass - at least in views - many 2000erseek. I wanted to sleep somewhere - bivouac or hut, but it didn't come to either the first or the second.

Matajur was this time's destination... which after the final decision overtook Kobariški stolvelik nasmeh. Completely different experience than two years ago when fog and of course cold awaited us at the summit.

In short, we started from Avsa village. But somewhat higher than usual... on the "old path"nasmeh. Which pleasantly cools and delights the soul with rather quick views towards Krn... and even furthermežikanjenasmeh... towards our highest peaks. In the forest noticeable shell holes, which remind of past horrors of this wonderful landscape. Over Črničeva we arrive at Srednji vrh, neighbor of the more known Mrzli vrh, which lies above Idrska planina. We reach the gravel road, which is really nice and leads to the planina. Here we meet older hikers from Sežana, higher up also the known Primorska herbalist, who shares advice with us on the proper use of certain medicinal plantsnasmeh. Teaching about this is always welcome, since you never know when you might need something. Then right uphill. With altitude, increasingly beautiful views open up.nasmehnasmeh.. which don't run out. We cross the ridge and we're already at the summit. Enchanted and "struck" by the beauties of naturemežikanje. You wish these moments would last and last, and that time would stopzavijanje z očmimežikanje. Smile on the face and joy and happiness in the eyes are indescribable... and pricelessnasmeh. Soon the first mountain biker arrives behind us. Who leaves the summit after about 20 min. So we have the summit to ourselves. But not for long. Hikers, well, more excursionists - at least judging by footweareek, are coming from the lower hut. Mostly Italians. Well, also a Slovenian family arrives at the goal. The amateur photographer instructs us about nearby peaks and about the appropriate time to visit. He agrees that autumn is the most beautiful for visiting mountains. When the foliage colors in warm red shadesnasmeh, the sun pleasantly warms... and when mountain visits visibly decreasevelik nasmehnasmeh. After a good hour of lounging and especially enjoying, one has to leavemrk pogled... with a heavy heart. We meet some more hikers, who will probably sleep in one of the huts. We descend towards Idrska planina. I'm drawn to Mrzli vrh as well... for the icing on the cakemežikanje. Again enjoyment... and observing livestock on pasture. The descent then proceeds along the cart track past collapsed huts, of which there are quite a few. Then along the asphalt road past Lovska koča to the starting point.

Full of new beautiful, what beautiful, wonderful impressionsnasmehnasmeh we return to Drežnica, where a pleasant warm bed awaits us... with a view of the yet unvisited Krn... which will be next time I'm in these parts.

For Matajur my parents told me that in suitable weather it is enchanting and worth a visit and that the peak doesn't leave you indifferent. And how right they were. Definitely I'll returnnasmehmežikanje.

On Monday 24.12.12 the road was passable only to Matajur village. Further closed, snowy and icy. Passable with chains or 4x4.
Given the warm past days, probably much snow melted, as seen on the summit camera too.

I assume the road is plowed, since people live in the village who work in the valley, and school-age children....I don't remember the road ever being closed or impassable before, when there was much more snow than now.

Curiosity about the snow conditions on Matajur drove me up there. Past Sovodenj to the village of Matajur (Italian side) the road is normally passable, then skis on feet and towards the summit. Lots of hikers with snowshoes or without, likewise ski tourers. The sight of winter Matajur is miserable. Snow windblown or drifted, track made to the top, both walking and skiing ones. At the top fog so you couldn't see a few meters ahead, skiing down from whoo-hoo to a bit less whoo-hoo. Depends where you chose the "line". I already decided on the far right (direction of ascent) on the way up and chose right.... the closer I got to Rifugio Pelizzo, the more powdery it was. If I had descended the summer path, I'd have had to zigzag between snow and grass. On the road it was flying nasmeh. And since the meadows were nicely covered with snow, of course I "cut the corners" and in the end found that the skiing was the best from about 1400m downward. I also checked conditions on the road between Matajur village and Livek ...plowed and well passable. Also to Avsa village.

Today on Matajur like in a fairy tale. To the village Matajur the road is clear. Above the village closed and heavily snow-covered. Despite forecasts very warm weather (at start -4, but no wind, path ascends sunny southern slopes, a few hikers already in short sleeves).
We head via Planina Gosnach to Maršinska Planina (Malga di Mersino). To here the path is well trodden. In the lower part about 5 cm soft snow on firmer base. Towards Maršinska the amount of soft snow increases. At the start of the planina the well-trodden path heads up towards Dom na Matajurju. We continue under the western slope of Matajur past the little lake (deep under snow) towards the end of the planina. Initially planned to turn at the lake towards Dom na Matajurju and from there to the top, but nice views and beaten path pull us to the northern ridge. Snow (still very soft) about 0.5 m on frozen base. Path along ridge is trodden (footprints by predecessors deep almost to knees). Nevertheless the path is very dangerous and I advise against it. It crosses steep slope where soft snow easily gives way.
At top great views, just no sea visible.
Down to valley past Rifugio Pelizzo and on along snow-covered road to Matajur village. Lots of snow here too. Soft snow still on hard base, so hardly sinks.
Despite slight mists Matajur with mighty neighbor Krn tempts (on the plain from Krmina/Cormos to Čedada/Cividale)1
Further from Čedad today's goal is like on the palm of the hand2

Suzana has already written in detail about the current conditions if going from the Italian side to Matajur. I went today on skis on the normal path. Wind started blowing at the junction to the Slovenian hut, but mainly the sun had its power today and the forecasted afternoon freeze didn't happen. Skiing possible from the top, first part a bit crusty, then good firm base, on the road it was like on a piste. nasmehNobody could tell me if Tina won..mrk pogledWell, then I heard the super news via home sources.nasmehOh yes, the hut on the Slovenian side right below the summit is open every Sunday.
