A month ago still all in flowers, now only golden grasses adorn Matajur. Some snapshots from the last three walks from Rif. Pelizzo past Skrila spring and back across Maršinska planina or past Dom na Matajure. As always beautiful, soothing and inspiring.

On 1.9. no peace to be found here, as Mountain Festival (Festa della montagna) is coming with hike, bike race and mass. On 31.8.2013 opening of the astronomical observatory.

A few days ago the prospects for the weekend were poorer, so already on Thursday, 17.10.2013 I hurried to Matajur hoping for a good full moon shot. It was supposed to shine in its full roundness today, if clouds don't hide it.

Despite the forecast clear skies, it didn't look promising from the valley. But on the top ...
The summit appeared from the clouds and fog only just below Rif. Pelizzo.1
Passing the Skrila spring, I hurried to the ridge hoping that at least on the other side there would be some views.2
Above the Skrila spring I stepped into the last sunbeams,3
which got caught in the grasses.4
The sun had already hidden behind the summit, so the continuation of the path was in the shade.5
On the ridge, however, a surprise!6

Today's nicely snow-covered Matajur offered real winter pleasures. Strong wind whirled snow into drifts and turned this mild hill into a wild adventure.

Snow started a few bends below Rif. Pelizzo, to which I drove on dry road (seems they plowed).
In lower part snow almost frozen, on usual direct path wind-blown and packed into clumps, past Skrila spring just firm enough for safe step even without crampons, which stayed in backpack this time. From Skrila spring on snow depth increased to 0.5 m, higher even 1 m soft drifted snow, in which snowshoes sank right through. So I struggled to summit after long time. This time skipped ridge path, as blowing so hard I could barely hold myself on my feet. When broke through to top thought worst at top, but descent to valley windier at every step. At end of path barely got into car holding door with both hands so not ripped off.
From logbook saw one hiker made it from Avsa too (probably morning when not blowing so hard yet).

On former national holiday to Matajur and from Italian side, from village Matajur. Road dry and passable to Pelizzo hut. Matajur slopes windblown, in places drifted snow and casually sink to knees. Views on cloudless day magnificent. Another shipment of snow and ... ski tourers will get their due velik nasmeh.

Today a wonderful sunny day despite forecast of strong bora, wind just a sample and only on the top. Snow appropriate for this time. Just under the summit a bit more but no problems, only too many cars and dogs as they drive to below the summit. A couple of pics.

Yesterday, 1.12.2013 at noon, spotted it from Sv. Lovrenc on Banjska plateau, couldn't resist.

From afar visible that previous day snow whitened it more. Some light snow on road right above Matajur village, but only short sections. Drove to lower parking below Rif. Pelizzo. Further road more snow-covered and slippery from packed snow even for walking.

Despite strong wind at start, headed to scenic ridge via lower path past Skrila spring. Both paths well trodden, newly fallen snow up to 10 cm. On ridge surprisingly little wind, but gaining strength on top and descent so end quite windy.

Setting sun colored snow-covered neighbors nicely and made this ascent special too.

Today went to Matajur. Drove to Avsa, from there up old path to summit. Path trampled, snow mostly frozen so no slipping problems. Met no one on path or summit and enjoyed views completely alone.

Some snapshots from today's Matajur, to which I rushed before sunrise hoping for some sun ray.
The moon trapped in the cloud shone well1
in the coming day the stars were still shining2
behind me the morning dawn was slowly colouring the sky3
in reality it wasn't that bright yet, as it looks in this photo4
even above the sea it was reddening5
so as not to miss the sunrise, I took the shortest path to the summit from Rif. Pelizzo6

I continued towards the saddle between Matajur and Visoka glava (since summer the path around Matajur is marked as the Path of Three Municipalities)41
since the path is marked, it is more visited, as shown also by the footprints of predecessors in the well-frozen snow42
for a moment the summit of Krn showed from the clouds43
From the saddle I also turned to Visoka glava44

the hut was open (even though it says otherwise).58
on old path further to Livk below eastern slopes of Matajur (view back)59
and further along path past Skril spring to Rif. Pelizzo. Thus the loop around Matajur closed.60

On yesterday's first day of the new year morning wasn't promising, webcam view didn't show inviting image of Matajur. Hoping for better afternoon at 12.00 set off from home and drove to Rif. Pelizzo. Though around Matajur peak blue slowly showed, nicely whitened trees lured to path over Ledina. While crowds rolled on direct path, met only two couples on mine.
Just below ridge stepped into thin cloud layer, on ridge warm sun and calm awaited. So immersed in beautiful views until Matajur shadow caught me and drove to top where caught moments of solitude. Waited for sunset and nearly in dark last left my beloved peak.
Magnificent new year start.
