Today when it would really be a sin to stay home, I used the beautiful day and headed to Matajur. Started from Avsa village at old parking no longer used. Constantly (too much) sun, no frost or strong wind. Until met returning hiker, only wildlife tracks on trail. Higher, more snow. Doable but sinking inevitable. Luck that path from Idrska planina onward was trampled. Matajur top nice view and crowd of people. In short, nice hike!

Today on Matajur from village Matajur. Road to village bare, further on roadway rolled snow, smoothed even to ice, which didn't hinder numerous cars that more or less successfully reached Rif. Pelizzo. Hiking trail from village Matajur well trodden all the way to Maršinska planina and further towards Dom na Matajur. Also towards little lake and further to saddle between Matajur and Visoka Glava trodden with some more holes, right under saddle frozen. From saddle first went to Visoka Glava. Then planned to circle under northern slopes of Matajur and climb path from Avsa. But sun and trodden path lured to northern ridge. Through deep holes of predecessors overcame slope which is otherwise dangerous for slipping, further snow mostly blown to hard base. With small crampons still somehow ok, better with mountaineering ones which stayed home this time. Otherwise with larger snow amounts, especially soggy, avoid this path. From top continued along eastern ridge towards Avsa and further on Old path across Ledina. Shortened path by descent on steep grassy slopes, on which just right snow for snowshoes, at same time too little for snow to slide to valley. Finished path a bit on road, a bit on snowy grassy slopes and snowshoed all to car. Let photos speak about beauties of the day.

Generously whitened with snow, sun in abundance and threatening black clouds, so I would describe today's Matajur. Road above village Matajur closed. Since no snow visible high above village, road dry, drove on. Soon slipping under tires, though no ice visible, at 11 with +4 degrees and strong sun didn't expect it. Parked by road and continued ascent on it with crampons. Ice mostly melted by evening, only in spruce grove won't run out for few days. On return under grove by road all parked, only one car broke through ice. Above grove road bare another poor kilometer, further snow amount increased rapidly. Below Rif. Pelizzo turned to path past Skrila spring and through untouched white reached saddle where old path from Livk joins. Here ran into skier tracks, higher on ridge also two hikers' footprints. Hiking trail from Avse not looking trodden. In logbook only one entry from that direction two days ago. To valley past Dom na Matajur and over Maršinska planina, to which again enjoyed pristine snow. Otherwise southern slopes to Rif. Pelizzo well snowed on former ski slope. From Maršinska planina few steps towards village Matajur, then straight across and in long traverse descent barely to car. Whole path snowshoed, though snow didn't sink much and could go without. On southern slopes snow wet, elsewhere dry to slightly crusted, even frozen, snow cover thick up to 1.5 m.

Matajur, Kolovrat, Slap Boka – that's how I went today, started on the Italian side a bit above the village Matajur, along the track to the top, returned the same way. After returning, I also decided for Kolovrat, walked over some peaks. Later, when I drove with the car to the valley, I also decided for Slap Boka to the viewpoint, around 3/4 hour walk.

Today's gloomy day is just right for reviving memories of last Sunday. As the predecessor mentions, the siege of Matajur was really terrible. But that only applies to the main paths, which I usually avoid. My path started in the village Matajur, ascended a bit on the road and a bit across to the bend under Rif. Pelizzo, where I turned onto the untouched white towards Ledina. Fresh snow balled under snowshoes, so progress was quite difficult. At the same time fairy-tale beautiful under snow-laden branches reaching to the ground, from which snow poured down the neck and pleasantly cooled the overheated body from the scorching sun and strenuous snowshoeing. After an hour breaking through soft snow, I reached the cart track - Old path from Avse. Further walking was somewhat easier, as two snowshoers ahead had already broken the trail from Avse (one of the heroes I met two days later on Kobilja glava). Towards the ridge, I still pulled my own track, then continued on the highway to the crowded top. The crowd on the top carried me along the northern ridge, where it was quite steep and icy in some places, further softened and deep sinking, so snowshoes were useful all the way to the end of Maršinska planina. Snow towards the end of the path to village Matajur changed to mud and the top of Matajur was covered by clouds. Nice day continued with strolling by Nadiza, picking wild garlic, enjoying spring flowers and visiting the church in Rozac (Corno di Rosazzo).

If I understand and see correctly, without snowshoes it's not possible to go from Avse? Asking for next weekend. Thanks.

This time after a long time from Avsa. First snow on the path after about half an hour of walking, when the path after steep ascent noticeably levels out. From Sunday's deep track only hardened base remained, the rest smoothed by the sun. The path was passable without snowshoes, but snow gained softness with altitude. I went with snowshoes myself as soon as possible. Snowshoeing on otherwise wet but fairly compact snow was quite easy, as I mostly followed the faded track of predecessors. From the parking lot in Avsa I started walking on the Old Path and in between turned to Srednji and Mrzli vrh. Continued on the mountain path. Instead of to the ridge (Beneška direction) I turned under the northern slopes of Matajur and continued on untouched whiteness. On initially dry and slightly crusted, then softened snow I climbed to the saddle between Matajur and Visoka glava. First the northern ridge ascent tempted me, on which it looked trampled. But the snow seemed too softened for safe ascent and from the saddle I rather descended to the little lake on Maršinska planina. Followed a short ascent to Dom na Matajur and then on the western ridge to the summit. Descent on the eastern ridge, instead of on the mountain path towards Avsa I turned right and continued on the Old Path. Initially on snowshoed and trampled road, then followed track through the forest. Continuation across Idrska planina, where snow in the afternoon was properly softened and slippery. Snow cover reached approximately to the first collapsed hut, further on the cart track to Avsa without peculiarities. High temperatures and scorching sun quickly transform and melt snow. On Idrska planina approximately 1m, on the ridge some 30 cm more. On Sunday the track was 0.5 m deep, today leveled with the base. On the Italian side snow to Rif. Pelizzo. Path dry to the lower parking lot.

From Avsa to Matajur along the marked "Old Path", which starts at (for me) a new parking lot above the village. More or less without snow, only that part which, from the junction where the path turns right to the ridge from the road, continues a bit on the road and further, is still under snow. But the snow was nicely soft and there was no sinking, so no gear was needed. Southern slopes more or less dry. From the summit we descended for coffee to the Pelizzo hut, where they have the world's smallest beer (2 dl), then under the hut back uphill and on the old path again to the car. Few visitors, still nice weather and somewhat more hazy views, on Predel rain as it should be.

On Saturday from Avsa over Idrska planina to the summit. Descent to the hut of Benečija's friends and return on the Old Path back to the start. From Idrska planina towards the summit still quite a bit of rotten snow . Old path more dry. Spring is just starting here and harbingers of this season are visible .

Has anyone been to Matajur recently and can tell if there is still spring rotten snow or if it is already dry? We would go with kids but the youngest does not have semi-winter gear yet and we would buy it. Thanks.

Last weekend patches of rotten snow only on the northern slopes of Matajur - on the path from the village Avsa. If you go the last third of the path on the trail that at the nicely marked junction turns towards Italy, you will walk on dry ground. Good luck and enjoy yourselves on this beautiful viewpoint.

Thanks to user ksena. Today we did the ascent right from the village Avsa and went as suggested, then a bit on the Italian side. Since energy did not run out, we descended past the hut on Matajur to Rifugio Pelizzo and then went a second time to the top of Matajur and back to Avsa. The path is very nice, but it rained the last days and it was quite muddy. At a couple of tricky spots I still strapped the youngest. Enthusiasm over the views and the first real mountain flowers was the greatest. On the southern slopes we also met the first gentians. I warmly recommend the trip to the western end of the homeland to everyone.
