Yesterday's Matajur beautiful in the billowing grasses. Views to the sea in mysterious mists.
The start of the day on Krminska gora, because after two days at sea level I was not too tired for an earlier rising. The few visitors were thanks to the road closure I hit on return, with no sign on my morning drive to Rif. Pelizzo.
Due to the 50th Rally Friuli, which this year passed through Matajur village too, they closed the road from Sovodenj without warning from 9:00 to 18:00. Around 14:30 in a race pause they let me and a few other captives after endless negotiations down a few 100 m to Matajur village, further to the valley on the road that is closed to traffic in the upper part. Steep narrow road winds through hamlets above Natisone valley. Really unbelievable, on what steep slopes villages grew, now with a newly asphalted road leading to them. When I zigzagged into the valley at Podbonesec / Pulfero, I sighed in relief.

Eastern Slovenia was sunlit all week, its western part up to the Alpine foothills buried in clouds. So nothing tempted me to the nearby hills, hence some glimpses from the previous Sunday, 5.10.2014, when the sun on Matajur warmed like midsummer. Instead of views, sparkling autumn colors. This time via Ledina, back via Maršinska planina.

My belated thanks to BibaS.

I see there was quite a lot of rain in Western SLO and the forecast till Saturday inclusive isn't quite rosy... if on Sunday there really is a day without rain, after this heavy rain I'm interested:
will it be possible to drive normally with a personal car from Central SLO to all starting points for the listed hikes?
Could any hiking trail be somewhat harder to pass, too muddy, etc...?

The weather for Matajur is not the best either. From Avsa there is less mud on the cart track or road to Idrska planina and then the Old path. From Mašera village the path through forest and meadows, some mud likely.
Mud surely also on the lower (marked) path past Skrila spring (almost always, better upper unmarked). Some mud over north ridge to saddle below Visoka glava. Other paths well consolidated, real mud only when snow melts.

31.10.2014 again via Ledina. No autumn abundance left, but views and setting sun gave true colors.

Today's Matajur. Just right whitened for the opening of the snowshoe season. This time from Rif. Pelizzo past the Skrila spring to the saddle where the path from Avse joins. I descended along it to the junction and continued under the northern slopes of Matajur to Visoka glava. On the descent from Visoka glava I fell into a hole from which I barely dug myself out. When there's no snow, the holes are covered with tufts of grass, now there obviously wasn't enough to fill them. So despite the frozen snow I broke through, and the snowshoe got stuck in a narrow crack between rocks and roots. I dug quite a bit to get it out of the packed snow. Continuation to the pond on Maršinska planina and ascent past the Dom na Matajuru to the top of Matajur. Then along the eastern ridge and then along the forest road under the ridge and descent to Rif. Pelizzo. Snow was nicely frozen in the morning, but in the middle of the day it softened on sunny spots. The whiteness started a bit before the Skrila spring and 100m above Rif. Pelizzo. I assume snow starts on the path from Avse only above Idrska planina, as Mrzli vrh was almost bare. On the northern side and eastern ridge there was about up to 30 cm of snow, mostly just a few cm covering the ground, which will melt quickly in the warm weather like today. Where there's more snow, it might last a long time.

Finally, notice about the road closure from village Mašera to village Matajur due to asphalt paving on 21., 22., 24., 25. 11.2014 from 7.30 to 16.30. As I saw from the prepared signage, the detour from Sauodnje/Savogna right after the bridge left on the narrow and winding road past village Starmica/Stermizza. The road between Mašera and Matajur is full of potholes and urgently needs repairs.

Yesterday's misty gray behind Matajur didn't promise much photographic pleasure. Also the wind that was pulling quite strongly and from pleasant 4 degrees above zero gave the feeling it's below freezing, didn't infuse optimistic drive. So I started walking from Rif. Pelizzo quite unenthusiastically towards Maršinska planina. After half an hour the slopes of Matajur were already shining in true colors. Freshly whitened mountain tops were sparkling from the dark gray-blue background. The changing color contrasts attracted me so much that I almost didn't notice when darkness crept in, although I spent three hours on the top. Hard to resist the splendor of nature that no computer processing can recreate.

P.S. The road asphalted a month ago hasn't seen much improvement. Potholes still in abundance, new asphalt only a few 100m.

Today on Matajur from village Matajur. Road to the village is clear, further towards Rif. Pelizzo nicely snowy all the way to the last bend where snow miraculously disappears. Road not driven on, nicely walkable and without ice. But since snow was quite watery, it might freeze at lower temps.

To the top I ascended the hiking path, where in the lower part there was just enough snow that mud wasn't visible yet, higher up a bit more. Well trodden track from Maršinska planina as always continues on the direct path to Dom na Matajuru. Towards the pond there was a track of walkers with quite deep holes, which I leveled a bit with snowshoes. From the pond the track continued both to the hut and to the saddle with Visoka glava. This time I went up to the hut. Snow was extremely heavy and I could hardly drag the snowshoes on which snow balled up. From Dom na Matajuru to the top almost clear. Same on the direct path to Rif. Pelizzo, where snow starts only below it. Wind this time swept well. According to the logbook there were some ascents from Avse these days. On north side about 0.5m snow, on south up to 20cm (where not drifted or in hollows).

2.1.15 around similar time as SuzanaM on Matajur, but from our side - from Livk. Road to Livk and further to Avse excellently plowed and salted. Inversion noticeable - in valley morning -6, at Livk in shade 0, higher up sun already quite spring-like warming.
Path from Avse well trodden, snow due to high temps quite slushy and often practically walking on water, which will freeze quickly with forecasted low temps. Otherwise surprisingly little snow, most around the planina and just below the ridge. On ridge to top almost none. Snow cover very uneven, one step bare, next deep snow. Wind did its job and yesterday afternoon it was blowing quite cold on the ridge. Afternoon clouds came and martin-bathing by the summit church unfortunately off...
Quite some visits to the top, number of this year's visitors in the book I rounded to 40. Views reached far, only blue sky covered by cloudy gray.

SuzanaM,
I haven't been to Matajur yet. Interested in the road Matajur - Rif. Pelizzo. Is it perhaps officially closed to traffic? Some hribi.net descriptions say it can be in winter conditions.
did anyone drive it with a car? could it be drivable on Tuesday, with or without chains?
otherwise thanks for the nice report enriched with many photos.

Road to village Matajur always plowed. From village Matajur (950m asl) to Rif. Pelizzo there was snow on road up to 20cm, in drifts more. 2.1.2015 road not closed, but no one drove car on it. If, would need chains. When cars start driving on it, instead of nice snow ice will remain. Along road to Rif. Pelizzo about 45 min pleasant walk (3.5km). Hope it stays snowy long.
