But is Viševnik generally known as an avalanche-prone "area"?

I think 5 years ago some ski tourers died.

What about some gully on Viševnik? Maybe someone knows the route, where to go? I've been to Viševnik 2x via the normal.

path to Viševnik is not demanding, especially now when there is not much snow, good for building fitness you can't get lost, crampons are good to have, safer and more secure, especially at the summit where it is icier in places...otherwise nice winter tour for a breather

Yesterday (23. 2. 2012) my colleague and I were on Viševnik. From Rudno polje towards Jezerca to Konjščica relatively beaten path. From there we trod to Jezerca. Mostly on old track before snowfall. Sinking to waist in places. At Jezerca the packed ski track continues from Studorski preval towards Srenjski preval. From M. Draškega vrh traces of several avalanches visible. From Srenjski preval to summit very little snow, mostly walking on rocks and windblown grass, only near summit on south slopes a bit more snow. Descent to ski area as already described. Very beaten. At Jezerca met a female skier - on cross-country skis. Interesting.

Today from Rudno polje to Viševnik. Path trampled (wide) all the way to top, so no need even for gaiters. On way up and down met at least 30 hikers, whom the sun lured to the mountain just like me. Temperature at top fully spring-like and windless. Regards

On Sunday we decided to climb Viševnik with the group too. Upon arrival at Pokljuka it was snowing pretty well, despite the forecast of partly clear weather. Snow was crusty, so crampons gripped well. A bit higher we had to ascend on the already made track through the bushes. Upon reaching the ridge clouds started breaking and sun was shining nicely at times. On the way we met quite a few people whose goal was only Viševnik, but we went further towards Veliki Draški Vrh. Photos of the ascent to Viševnik can be seen at M-foto.si

Conditions on Viševnik today are completely different from last week, much less snow and much colder. Ski slope practically bare, more snow only in lower shaded part of the piste, and on the road to the ski area, which is practically solid ice all the way. Gully above the ski slope on the left side (facing up) still snowy, but after initial 20m summer path already bare and passable. From top of gully to ridge where Bohinj view opens, a bit more snow, completely hard and quite slippery without poles or crampons, as no real track (but footprints). Path through pines tricky, too little snow to walk over, too much to walk between. From where path reaches meadow, snow no obstacle, as the only larger patch is avoided by path. Summit nice, but except cold (today at summit around 8am well below zero, strong north wind blowing) no sign of winter conditions. Photos tell more. P.S. morning snow cannons full power at Rudno polje, so cross-country skiers can expect snow base for a few more days.

On Friday 16.03 it was the last, already fourth day of enjoying Pokljuka, where one literally recharges batteries. For the end we chose Viševnik, which was also the most visited those days in beautiful sunny weather. Viševnik, as well as other peaks we visited, belong to the so-called "Pokljuški gamsi" trail (from Tosca to the last peak Debela peč), which we'll do in summer or autumn. So on Friday we left Blejska koča at Lipanca and descended to Šport hotel, from there drove to Rudno polje and up along the lift to Viševnik. Won't describe the path in detail as predecessors did many times. Just say that up the gully you can climb on hard snow or bare on summer path, all to the ridge with nice views to Bohinj range. Still snow in bushes but doesn't sink. Out of bushes path bare. At summit nice sunny and warm weather, which later slightly changed as wind picked up. Descent to start point without issues.

On Saturday I awaited the sunrise on Viševnik. Some icy patches, but during the day I saw they were easy to avoid. At summit enjoyed wonderful color show and really nice views. Then to Srenjski preval and quite high on slope of M. Draški vrh, but stopped by snow patch requiring some detours to bypass - it'll wait. Return via Kačji rob, where still lots of snow sinking during day. Photos posted on my website in post: Sunrise on Viševnik

Mailman, snow and shorts. Somehow it doesn't go together. I'm eyeing Bela peč these days, of course I'd go past Prešeren hut too, but snow doesn't appeal to me too much. Had enough of it yesterday on Košutica. But I'll go in three weeks, of course from Studenec. L.P.
