Why so many recalls? This is very irresponsible from the manufacturers, as they are playing with lives here.

Recalls are not irresponsible at all. It's right that if some deficiency or non-compliance is found in products, appropriate action is taken. From the recalls, it's clear that only those who used stretchy slings without an additional load-bearing sling inserted under the outer sheath, protected from external influences, have a problem. All recalls concern the same deficiency: the stretchy sling no longer meets all safety regulations after prolonged use. Black Diamond hasn't recalled its products yet because this stretchy sling consists of an outer and inner part and is not so sensitive to external influences, at least that's how I interpret it. It's true that these new materials were probably insufficiently tested before such mass use, and this will be a good lesson for the future. It's also sad that before this is discovered, someone has to die.

Recalls really aren't irresponsible... but it is irresponsible that apparently almost all manufacturers put insufficiently tested safety equipment on the market that saves lives!! As Keko said, sadly someone had to die because of it!! ..I personally had 99% confidence in the equipment (I also have a stretchy sling myself), now honestly I don't even know what to think. The manufacturer whose kit I have hasn't recalled any piece of equipment yet, so I can only guess... whether the equipment is ok, or the manufacturer doesn't even think additional testing is necessary.. In short, this cost-cutting can literally kill us! ..

Also Mammut and OCUN, more on the link below: http://www.iglusport.si/novice/samovarovalni-kompleti MAMMUT kits without problems and safe to use, while OCUN has temporarily stopped sales/use of kits.. Interesting note that the reduction in load capacity occurs with long and intensive use that apparently exceeds the normal service life frame...

daaam I agree. I have a Mammut, so one of those that was assured "everything ok". But still ... So we will have to stick even more to the basic rule of moving on secured paths. There you don't fall!

Jax, I couldn't agree more with your last sentence. Already when planning a tour, you need to choose goals that we are fully up to.

In all this, we users will get the short end of the stick. We will mostly throw away these new stretchy "crappy" slings, manufacturers will produce new "safer" ones, sellers will happily sell them, and we will break piggy banks again to be able to safely clip ourselves and our children. That's how it is. The last one in the chain always gets fu..ked.

pohodni, it's not that black again. Recalled products will be repaired or replaced free of charge. Singing Rock will include their via ferrata set in exchange for postage..

Additional explanation from Ocun CLICK Interesting reading.. especially regarding UIAA standards. And I'm increasingly curious how worn the set that broke was....

Since today it's here, it says those with self-belay sets from other makers should contact them directly. Curious if they'll respond I'm a "happy" Ocun owner.

Ocun replied in under an hour with an apology for the delay, notice appeared on their web page minutes later. Positively surprised.

Good and useful is especially this "saying" in the mentioned post: " Don't allow yourself to fall!"
