Good day. I would like to ask for information about the situation on Storžič. Which trail would be the best for these conditions? Thanks

8.2.2025 Storžič from the south side past Praprotnik hut. Base very good, hard compact snow, no sinking, no ice so crampons and ice axe no problem. Summit fog, strong wind but not too cold.

Ciao gang. After one month, tomorrow finally chance for mountains. Weighing options... if someone gives "poor me" opinion.

In current spring snow conditions, what's safer: A) Storžič via Bašelj sedlo, B) Kladivo via Kofce gora, C) none? velik nasmeh Estimate realistically Storžič top by 10am max, Kladivo ~9am.

Morning official II level, noon danger up. Try and turn always option, accept as answer nasmeh, but prefer where summit sure nasmeh.

Sunday no option unfortunately.

Yesterday on Storžič one with dog turned back on hunter's path (info from FB), because too late and sinking and avalanche risky on grasses; but he wrote that someone before him went to the top... if early enough, it's beton, because on south side snow windblown, then dangerous in other direction (slip)... path from Bašelj sedlo has couple risky and technically more demanding spots, both avalanche danger and slip, depending if early or late nasmeh Above 1800m snow cover thickens a lot, so probably from Bašelj sedlo up still quite snowy, including traverses, gullies and protections on couple demanding spots. Surely some local masters will go up tomorrow, all depends on experience and proper gear, of course.

Honest advice (not your Storžič fan): go to Bašeljski vrh, to koča for coffee, along traverse to Hudicev borišt, and you'll have elevation/length similar to Kladivo.

If you claim competent for Storžič, then somewhat safer alternative now probably Bašeljski vrh - Mali Grintovec - Srednji vrh, here you collect more elevation, see some snow, nice, risks probably less than on Storžič (but risk not 0).

@jbs: thanks for the detailed answer.
@n3jc: thanks for the voice of reason. Regarding the suggestion, I've already done the listed ones in the snow, so the wish is elsewhere... nasmeh

The voice of reason also tells me to wait for Storžič next season and safer snow conditions. I already have quite some fear-respect for this mountain. Probably I just needed someone to confirm it velik nasmeh.

Anyway, for tomorrow I'll exclude winter Storžič from the options, but it definitely remains a goal for next winter.

Maybe someone knows how the path to Mali Grintavec is, if there's still some snow.

On Saturday there was still snow visible on north sides and summits from Javorov vrh to Grintavec, if it helps.

Mali Grintovec is dry. Nina4 probably meant Grintovec.

Hi, I'd go via Psica to Storžič, anyone have info on snow patches in the last part over Žrelo? Thanks.

I went Saturday from home below Storžič via Psica to last summit before Žrelo. That path was completely dry, but some smaller snow patches were visible in upper Žrelo. Also from Dom pod Storžičem a large snowfield was visible in lower Žrelo. Don't know more.
Small snow patches in the upper part of Žrela1

Is the path from Bašelj via Kališče to Storžič completely dry yet?
Thanks

Has anyone gone to Storžič recently via Škarjev rob or Žrelo? Is winter gear needed?

@poss Very likely I was there on 27.4 when I went to Mali Grintovec. Trail to junction completely dry, Storžič looked the same too (maybe little snow somewhere in gullies). Hope it helps.

I went up today through Žrelo. This path is almost completely dry; you need to cross just one unproblematic snow patch. Winter gear is not needed.

On the summit I saw large snow patches in the area of the path to Škarjev rob. They ended only around where the path reaches the ridge, so probably quite a bit of dealing with them if I went that way. The snow patches I saw by the ascent path were very soft. In such conditions, the question is how much winter gear even helps. Since the descent part from Storžič to Škarjev rob is also quite steep and exposed, I preferred to descend through the SW gully and over Mala Poljana. There the path crosses just one really narrow snow patch, completely unproblematic. But this path drags incredibly.

Today up via Žrelo, descent to Škarjev rob. Up all dry, down still one big snow patch which we bypassed. Not entirely easy.mežikanje
On summit cold and windy. No sign of sun.velik nasmehnasmeh
