First time to Storžič from the village Povlje. This path doesn't reach the beauty of the other southern approaches (as much of it runs on - roughly carved - forest tracks).

Still it was colorful: autumn in full glow, colorful plays of clouds and sun.

On Javornik plateau a large herd of goats is still grazing.

I finished at 1800 m when I reached the lower edge of the cloud. There snow up to 10 cm (ascent o.k., descent slippery).

My pledge to bring back from the mountain (at least) three pieces of trash each time I barely managed to fulfill - on this solitary path obviously neither people nor trash (consequently) velik nasmeh.

Today up the SW gully and past Kališče back to Povelj.
Started early (5:20), because I didn't know how long the gully stays in the shade or how long the conditions would be ok. Snow (avalanche debris) starts a bit below Planina Javornik. It was mostly hard and frozen, but not icy. I stayed in the shade all the way to the exit from the gully.
Before heading toward the valley (at 9:30) I checked the gully once more, which was still completely in the shade at that time.

The path to Kališče though... In places the snow had softened enough to be a slide. In other places still hard, in the last part (before reaching Bašeljsko sedlo) it sank up to my hips in spots. I was very glad to have the ice axe.

Today my first winter Storžič. From the Kališče direction up and down, starting point Bašelj.

Until winter Storžič I nurtured a lot of fear-respect, so before today's tour I wasn't entirely indifferent. Namely, during the last snowfall on Monday and Wednesday, although sparse, a strong north wind was blowing, building cornices on the southern slopes. So I was worried about how much windslab snow there would be on the southern flanks below the ridge, where you have to traverse. I set myself on a 50-50% chance of turning back if I didn't like it. In the end, no crisis. Conditions are mixed, but generally I'd say they're good. On the north side, the new snow is already quite icy and holds super; on the south, you need to be more careful right now. It also helped that it was already freshly trodden since yesterday. The route is smartly laid out at key points - over wind-scoured rocks, right above the flanks where you can see the wind-blown snow. Up before the summit it's hard and frozen.

At the end, also to Bašeljski vrh. That western slope was super today, hard as concrete; before the summit there were a couple of steep meters ideal for a bit more picking with the ice axe.

For the first time very satisfied. I'll come again. smile

On this slope before the shelter the new snow was immediately blown down.2
Only this crossing right before the shelter is potentially tricky, there is a lot of new snow. But it is not crusty.3
At the top. Very satisfied :)4

Under current conditions it is safest here over the rocks.9
Just before the summit of Bašeljski vrh. Right now it would also be great scrambling upwards here (:10

On Tuesday before the shift via the SW gully. "Easy hike, easy route". Unless something... gets complicated zadrega
Midway I was already thinking of skipping the summit, but I'm glad I didn't, in the end the patients weren't shortchanged either velik nasmeh
Conditions good, today it's probably a bit different already...

Interesting report. nasmeh

Regarding the accidentally forgotten equipment... For the sake of the post, it's good that you didn't write about what you didn't have, but otherwise no worries jezik... On Friday during the ascent on the eastern ridge, one guy overtook me so fast that everything was smoking behind him - without crampons, ice axe, helmet, backpack eek... I didn't see poles either. I'd say a local, as he confirmed that he made the track the day before. I believe someone here knows him. I've already met him for the second time on this path.

Although I admit I felt a bit silly when he overtook me like that, me slowly going up with full gear velik nasmeh, there were some nice steep slopes that I personally wouldn't even glance at without crampons and ice axe. A slip down would be looooong... And he just up and down Storžič like that eek zmeden

Anyway, I stick to my opinion - better one more piece of gear.

Uf, I wasn't equipped that badly zadrega And it's completely clear to me that I was far from being the first or the last without ***... it's not something praiseworthy or worth imitating... so no mention. And if I hadn't met anyone, I wouldn't have mentioned it at all velik

And that ridge too... well, it's a bit more exposed than the SW gully. But I won't tell anyone anything more about equipment. At least if it looks like the person knows what they're doing.

I wasn't judging you, just to avoid misunderstanding. nasmeh Of course I would have turned back if it wasn't safe. I just added my fresh experience, which shows your case in quite a positive light. velik nasmeh And about that mountaineer. Yeah, it was obvious he's "at home" on Storžič. Everyone knows for themselves and everything is OK - as long as everything is OK...

No, I didn't understand it as condemnation at all nasmeh I think it's quite right that a person writes their own experience. Whether an objective description of the conditions or what they themselves experience, especially when it's their first time on a more difficult tour. For example, I liked that sentence of yours "until winter Storžič I nurtured 'fear-respect'". It conveys a lot more about the experience and the pure joy at the end than cheesy phrases in the style of "a day for the gods" velik nasmeh

Tomco, someone posted on FB, it's about last Friday, that an older gentleman suddenly appeared at the top, who came from the Kališče side without crampons, ice axe, poles and without a backpack. He hit her on the back, instead of good day, and barked at her not to vote for communists on Sunday and already rushed back. So, in any case - weirdo nasmeh!

I met this guy myself twice. When he reaches the top, he doesn't greet back, kneels by the stone and immediately heads back without a word, later I saw him cycling past my house towards Kranj.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has current conditions now after this wind, given the avalanche warnings? My girlfriend and I planned to go to Storžič via the SW gully. (Friday/Saturday) Would it perhaps be better to take the longer path to Kališče and along the ridge (given that almost all paths to there are
closed). We're rather beginners regarding winter, as we've only been in winter so far to Stol, Turški žleb and Spiekoglu (we have all the gear).

I noticed that all paths to Dom na Kališču are closed and dangerous due to the aftermath of the windstorm.
