Today 30.9.2007 we went to Storžič from home below Storžič through Žrelo. Up to Psica ridge the path is mostly dry and well protected. From here to the top there is soft snow in places. From the top we descended via Škarjev rob, where there is even more snow and it stays frozen even during the day. Caution needed, helmet recommended, crampons(Šk. rob). Good luck.

Is there still snow on Storžič (direction Žrelo)? Is the uphill path dry or slippery?

If you ask me, this snow will stay... Just get used to it.

I have info from a person who went to Stožič on Sunday, the snow on Stožič should have disappeared by Sunday afternoon and it's possible to go up quite normally right through Žrelo. best regards,

No snow, the guy is seriously wrong. Looks like we can still go on the dry path to Storžič several times this year:

I was on Storžič via Žrelo on Thursday, when with my friend we found out that there is less snow on the north side than on the south. The path through Žrelo is almost dry, only towards the top a few icy patches and windblown snow, which doesn't hinder because the spots are well protected. The top was in wind and strong sun, in the valley sea of fog. Descent through Škarjev rob also not difficult except at the start of the descent where the slope is steeper and greater risk of slipping! The path to the valley accompanied us with sun rays and convinced us that it's better to use a weekday for a trip to the mountains than weekend crowds. b

For New Year's Eve we went to this peak and it was wonderful and even to Ljubljana Castle you could see a big fireworks. I recommend you go this year. Great.

I don't understand how you could see the fireworks from Ljubljana Castle, when it couldn't even be seen in Ljubljana because of fog. LP

Probably you didn't see it from below because you were in fog, but in the mountains it was clear, so I imagine the guest up there saw the fireworks above the foggy blanket.

Ascent via south slope, which turned out to be a very good route, as the snow held and nothing collapsed. Avalanche danger in this part is over. Back via Škarjev rob, snow is frozen, where there is a track it crumbles, so great caution needed. Weather 1A, just a bit windy on top. Lp

Today I was on Storžič, weather great, warm, went from Mač over Kališče and further over Bašeljsko sedlo along the ridge to the top. Snow is ok, in shade frozen but not icy, on south slopes quite a bit of southern snow, slips easily. lp, jure

Yesterday my colleague and I headed to Storžič; we took the path through Žrelo. The path is completely snow-covered (north face), higher up completely icy, so it was quite interesting, the slope is really wild. Without crampons, ice axe, helmet I don't recommend ascent at all!!! (ice axe comes in handy on the upper - icy part - across short wall) When we somehow crawled (even on all fours) to the pass, the path ahead to the goal was really enjoyable... full sun at the top. We returned via eastern direction. All together 5 and a half hours. lp.sas

What are the conditions like in the gully from Krničarjeva hut? Still dangerous for avalanche or already well settled?

Yesterday I only went to Krničarjeva hut and Kališče. Not much snow on Storžič anymore. Path from Bašelj to Krničarjeva hut completely dry, towards Kališče still some snow - in gullies and above Kališče. Snow below well settled. best Franci

Yesterday 20.4. at 15:00 I left Lesce by bike towards Storžič with mp3 player, cigarettes, lighter and camera. Never been to Storžič, original idea to go to hut under Storžič. Got a bit lost, came to some hut, left bike there and said fuck it, go to top. Big mistake choosing path called Žrelo. First nice, no snow at start, wire ropes ease path, midway so steep all frozen, wire ropes deep under snow... Had skate shoes, anorak and shorts. Every time a stone fell, I couldn't hear it stop. Pushed on, trudging, trudging, trudging 4 hours through snow till I reached some peak below top, view opened. At 22:00. Happy like won lottery. Wanted to light fire but all frozen or wet. Turned on mp3 and danced not to freeze, soaked like wet dog. Gathered courage and slid ass down other side, finally hit path and found footprints, think Škrjančev rob path. Another 2 hours searched gravel road I came up and found bike. At 2.30 night got home. Recommend if take this path bring lots of gear else becomes one big huge mess.
