I think that happens too, when defending its territory and family.

People often equate the wild rooster and the ptarmigan, think it's one and the same bird, actually it's a hen, they are very different.

... hey the red cap is in the snow, not visible... all other signs of wing shape, tail and color arrangement are the same as on the ptarmigan. Verified.

You know they are an endangered species of mountain hens. Not good that you finished it off.

Today with the guide we went from Logarska towards Ojstrica past Klemenčeva cave. Planned to fly from Ojstrica but due to wind started from saddle below Škarje. Snowshoes saved us a lot of strength otherwise it'd sink badly. It hit me hard seeing that dead ptarmigan. He kept us company higher by Klemenčeva cave too though he got aggressive over time but soon backed off.

This wallcreeper was a symbol of the path to Ojstrica. He defended his territory heroically. When he attacked you had to admire him - David against Goliath. Mentioned several times on the forum even. And then... an ignorant killed this little creature with a stick, who even says that this thing would "peck" his head. Please you rok86 - don't go to mountains anymore so no more damage - this is obviously not for you. Zoran

What can one expect if suddenly a big thing flies at your head? You smart ones, I'm interested what you would do, would you first check what animal it is, be realistic! Of course I care.

Wallcreeper is a very shy animal. If it were normally healthy, no way a human could feed it like that or approach it. I doubt a healthy wallcreeper would stay long on busy trail territory where hikers meet it, touch it regularly etc. Met it several times but unfortunately no chance (time) for photo.. Didn't someone write last year about similar case that turned out to be a sick specimen?

rok86 tell when you did it. We met him 19.1 at 9.30h. He was a bit annoying already, but no need to finish him off. Didn't attack my head but pecked glove a bit. Will add video.

Some people told me too it's almost certainly sick specimen, at least judging by attack.

That was yesterday afternoon on descent from Škarije. And it wasn't just pecking leg anymore.

Question is who is the "sick specimen" here. Judging by attack - with stick, we know who.

Here he looks totally fine! Keep dumb comments to yourselves. Everyone will experience something similar sometime.
