I'd go towards Gornji grad, before Črnivec turn into Podvolovjek to Luč. Then through Solčava past Logarska entrance another km and left Matkov kot.

Thanks, planning that way too, wonder if it's marked when you arrive at Logarska dolina for Matkov kot ...marked??mežikanje

Go past Logarska dolina entrance to Pavličevo sedlo, then sign for Matkov kot, drive macadam awhile to parking. Path marked. Go left side awhile, cross stream right and on. Haven't gone further, but no problem, Škaf visible from afar.

Hi, I used the trail description for Mrzla gora, it's quite well marked and you can hardly miss it..

As @prika wrote, it's best to stick to the markings for Mrzla gora. Before the trail starts steeply ascending, you're at Škaf!

Oh, you won't miss the Škafbig. I usually go like this from the direction of Solčava past the Logarska dolina entrance further approx. 1 km uphill towards Pavličevo sedlo - Austria, on the left side turn into Matkov kot where before the bridge there's also a small parking lot (pic 1). Past the renovated mill at the intersection take the left road until the next intersection where there's a sign for Matkova domačija, here you can park too. Then go straight on the lower road, along the meadow, across scree, then again meadow, then scree to the road that takes me to Bajta - hunter's hut by which there's a cross. From here straight towards the kot some 150-200 m until on the right I spot the red signpost, there step on the marked path which is well trodden. Crosses plaz but no problems. On my previous trip there were snow patches to cross but no trouble (see - my post a few above). Photos from last year from my hike to Mrzla gorasmile

Without trouble I (we) found the path and climbed to the Škaf... it really is something special, worth seeing... Weather was quite favorable to us, rain a bit washed the car on the way to Luče, then we didn't know if it was raining or fog.. on the return sun greeted us.. I enjoyed itsmile

Did you need crampons and ice axe for the path to the Škaf?

yes, I'm interested too if crampons are needed, I saw ice axe on backpack... is snow hard or soft - thaw

For snowfield to Matkov shelf no crampons and ice axe needed. We used chains for ascent though, less slippy, descent pure enjoyment - glissading with poles like skiingbig. Best

As Tonka said, crampons and ice axe stayed in backpack... descent enjoyment...smile Snow just right for great hike, only around shelf morning a bit hard, caution not superfluous...wink

Due to the distance I'd like to kill two birds with one stone: Matkov Škaf and Mrzlo goro. I'm curious about the path from the Škaf onwards in this season (most difficult section to Latvice, conditions in Latvice and on the ridge - snow of course). Do you recommend this route now or better wait till July, August?

On Saturday it was still quite snowy, also some fresh snow just above the Škaf, but couldn't see far up due to fog and low clouds... my mate who was with me said caution needed there even if experienced in winter hikes..zadrega...my tour will wait for summer... nasmehnasmehnasmeh

Yesterday I was in/at the Škaf, yes higher up some new snow; so I don't know.. Janez if you ask me personally, I wouldn't go. But of course it's an individual matter..

On pics 1 and 6 @mukice, conditions above Škaf are clearly visible. Probably not changed much since.
If snow bothers you, wait a bit more!
