I also went today to see this year's shaft. It really is impressive. I agree with lijaneja that it is best to go as much as possible on snow, since the marked path on the right side requires crossing many snowfields, lots of fallen trees too. But I think crampons are recommended for the upper part, especially if circling the shaft, photographing and measuring it.

That saddle is a meter lower than my measurement, so yesterday's official average depth was 18m. Janez, on crampons you're right, especially if early when snow is harder.

A friend calls if I join to the Shaft and of course yes, worth seeing this year. We started at that upper ramp. Road to hut is nicely walkable. Path is also quite good, only once we detoured to scree to avoid some fallen trees. Snowfield was quite soft, so could reach Shaft nicely even without crampons. To cool off a bit after strenuous ascent, we descended into Shaft and showered well.big Snow for descent into Shaft was a bit problematic first few meters due to softness. Lower down snow was perfect for nice ice axing. It was really enjoyable with quite some adrenaline for some.wink Then followed descent and end of short but wonderful trip to Rinka in Solčava.

Janez, I know you're an experienced mountaineer, but I fear adrenaline prevails over reason. I wouldn't risk it due to falling projectiles, for which a helmet is not enough for some.

If that's the case then don't go see this pothole, because the adrenaline is too high and "you can get a projectile even on the very edge of the pothole.
Descent into the pothole at this time is an experience and if you have gear and someone experienced with you then you go.

I descend at the end of July, when it's less than a meter deep:-)

Checked yesterday. Pothole still in place, very big, beautiful slipper I saw only on my foot. Next time I must look more at the ground, but my gaze was drawn only upwards.
Path to pothole best straight through the scree. Can go between boulders and then up snow.
On marked path besides fallen trees in lower part, two more snow crossings. Under first is tunnel, snow can collapse. At second crossing trouble getting back to path.
Recommend winter gear.

This time the reason for visiting these nice spots was my dear. Already when we parked we met forum member garmont and his friends. We chatted briefly and then headed on the path. On the way to Škaf we admired the nice čeveljci, there are really lots of them. Worth going up just for them. When higher at the snowfield mine looked up the snowfield and said for her it's enough here.mežikanje We agreed to go as far as we could, in long zigzags we tackled the steep snowfield. We managed without major trouble, reward was gazing into deep Škaf and enjoying the view of the walked path.

Today 22.4. I went to check the state. No Škaf yet, it is just starting to form. On the path nothing special, except southern snow on the snowfield, so walking even in crampons was quite demanding.
