Žakelj's bivouac on "Stebrasta skala" Mežakla

Print
Majdag4. 02. 2013 17:37:55

....Today to the other side of the Sava. The closer I get to Mežakla, the colder it gets. Snow cleared on the forest path to the clearing, but the path is icy. Further on, snow is trodden but frozen. Don't go without crampons. Otherwise, snow on the bivouac too. Everything looks even smaller. Lojz made a new little bridge over the canyon for greater safety for himself and visitors. The bridge even has railings. You really feel much safer. He's had quite a few visitors this year already. He is happy for everyone who comes to his bivouac with good intentions, good lucknasmeh Majda

...What a shame for the day if it really rains tomorrow. In the afternoon I go to check if anything new up there. Oh yes. Full of avalanche debris just before SS. I crawled over it with some fear. Huge snow in front of the rock. Just book entry and quickly back. Then I met Lojz climbing up. He said avalanche comes about every ten years, no longer dangerous. Snow in front of rock is two and a half meters. Avalanches bring it down. Nothing for Lojz. For me enough to hurry back to valley. nasmeh

...Morning before rain. Snow before rock barely a sample left. But our local is diligent. Repaired the path, raised tower over clock so looks like little church. New little bridge already painted. Seems he's working on easier access to bivouac. Flagpole already stands. Yes, conscious Slovene our Lojz, good lucknasmeh

...It was time to check on our local. Lucky, he was even up there. Really happy for the visit. Flag was hanging too. Just finished railing on old little bridge. He has double bridges and even giggled a bit, rare at Lojz. Access on ledge easier too. Told me he was at Jerebikovec last Thursday. Sad because bivouac decayed so. Thought years ago to repair roof a bit, but someone stole sheet metal. Concluded someone didn't like it. Will build new one sometime when he has time, if not someone elsenasmeh

...It's been a while since I was up there. Lojz is enjoying ZTP, the bivouac stands lonely. Peace and quiet, just some stones heard from chamois. The rain soaked the path well, lots of leaves on the ground already. No way, autumn is coming too fastnasmeh

....Žakelj's Lojz....It was hard to accept the retirement news. Then he thought it over and realized it's best this way. He will spend all his time on the West Triglav Plateau or the rock under Mežakla. At SS he diligently renovates the bivouac. He marked the path even more with logs, so it really can't be missed. On the rock ledge there's already enough space, soon no need to kneel. Yes, very active. He gladly showed me the new ledges, hanging pictures and all he plans to do. From the bivouac down so fast you can't photograph him. He jumps to the valley like a chamois. I go carefully on wet leaves and steep path. nasmeh

... Still in the dark we set off from Kolperna to Stara Sava. We catch up with him at the little pillars. Lojz was already fixing the path. He was happy to see us. He welcomed New Year in the bivouac because too much new snow on ZTP. Every time I reach the bivouac I notice something new. We climbed to a new point where the bivouac and access are well visible. It's not hard to notice that he really enjoys making something new and time doesn't matter to him. When leaving I ask him if I should write something for those who love mountains. He said to take care of themselves, in mountains you never know, can always surprise you.

Every time the path takes me under Mežakla I always search for Lojz's bivouac with my eyes, once I'll visit him I tell myself and hurry on. Today I put aside the rushing and went to visit Lojz.
Soon as the path steeply goes uphill I spot him arranging the path, full of energy, enjoying his kingdom and missing the valley not at all. After a short chat we head together to the bivouac, the path passes incredibly fast reviving memories of paths walked in our mountains. He won't run out of work up there anytime soon, constantly improving and arranging. In spring the West Triglav plateau awaits him where he says he will spend most of the summer.

I too was lucky that Mr. Žakelj was home today when I headed to his bivouac. When I arrived he wasn't there yet and I felt kind of intrusive in his kingdom. But he dispelled the discomfort with his friendliness right away, showed me the inside of the bivouac too, above all he knows a lot about paths, peculiarities and sights of Mežakla. I too wish him all the best in further creation, both here and on ZTP.

...During the week I drove one lady Helena from Kamnik to the bivouac. She had wanted to visit it for a long time. Lojz also went with us. He can't forget that they ransacked his bivouac from Monday to Tuesday. They destroyed both his radios, broke two glasses on the windows, tore pictures, completely destroyed the gas stove. But the shovel, ladder and chair he found in the canyon. He can't understand to whom it's such a nuisance. On the torn map of Slovenia they wrote a threat to him. Sadly, in his anger he threw it in the trash. In anger it didn't occur to him to take it to the police. What kind of person could do that. The bivouac is intended for everyone. All are welcome who come up with good intentions. Everyone can rest in peace and gather new strength. I feel sorry for him. So much effort, good will is needed to maintain it nicely. For all of us who happily sit on the rock and admire Jesenice, Mežakla, Karavanke. The views up there are really unique. Luckily there are more good people than badjezen

Well, to stick exactly to this topic, if I was moved for off-topic.

Majda describes how AŽ was hurt by the ransacking.

Dear AŽ, every stick has two ends, we too are hurt by your attitude to cultural and natural heritage.

If I'm not mistaken this bivouac is where the mouse shows on the picture. What's the car access like, probably exit Lipce, then after some km, when going under railway crossing soon branches left unpaved road (400-500m) where the start is too. How to get up, yeah through bushes nasmeh Need to check once, of course if the bivouac is really there?

Lg should be here, just not visible on aerial photos. Next time in Jesenice I have to look a bit towards Mežakla.

... Yesterday was a nice day. It would be a shame not to go anywhere with my Ira. After lunch we head to the other side of Sava, to the bivouac. Broken trees lie everywhere, on the path and beside it. Who will clean this if Lojz doesn't do it. Probably no one. The path this year is bad, first mud, wet leaves, broken branches, then snow and deep holes. The last part over the scree is quite sliding. Quite difficult access to the rock. No trodden path like last winter. Access to the bivouac is also different, harder. Lojz wasn't up there. But we almost met him in the valley, as he was just climbing. The path makes no problems for him. During the talk he told me that in Vintgar gorge it's horrible. Even metal railings didn't hold, let alone other things. But he was happy to meet us. All February no one visited. Currently I don't recommend ascent to bivouac, path is very bad. But everyone walks at own risk.nasmeh

... Such strange days. Nowhere far, but to the bivouac on the rock it will be. Even with umbrella one can come. Fallen trees removed, path cleared. Forest all greened, primroses on sunny slope blooming. Nice. The local wasn't up, we came a bit early. Everything arranged, he had quite some visits in March and April. In the book everything noted. But we met, Lojz likes to talk. Also at the bivouac under Triglav he was in April. Five meters of snow there on ZTP, a lot. Will take some time to melt.nasmeh
