Veliko Kladivo (Košuta)

Print
Tadej28. 05. 2008 14:41:23
Today I set off from Planina Pungrat and continued over Škrbina to Veliko Kladivo. From Škrbina to the summit there are still two small snow patches, which don't cause major problems. A bit more caution was needed on the ridge due to strong wind. LP Tadej

Today again visit to Košuta, this time Kladivo allowed itself to be conquered. From Kofce straight along the ridge, most went to Veliki vrh (also my friends Aleks and Mitja), I went right towards Kladivo. The path here is not trodden (well.now it is), but you have to be careful, it was collapsing quite a bit, quite tricky.Views were OK, but it was blowing quite a bit, so not long on the summit.Descent via the circular path towards Šija and via Kofce to the car.Use of crampons and ice axe mandatory today almost from Kofce onwards. My descent was already trodden before and it was quite a bit easier. Enjoy.

It's been a while since we walked the Košuta ridge. Yesterday we drove to Jelendol and then along a fairly good forest road to Planina Pungrat. Right at the start of the path to Škrbina and Veliko Kladivo, a warning sign that the path is impassable somewhat disturbed us. Of course we went on and found that smaller landslides had almost completely washed it away in the upper part. In yesterday's conditions, despite that we safely reached Škrbina on dry steep grass. From here to the top of V. Kladivo there are no more difficulties. In dry weather the ridge path is real pleasure, just airy enough, very panoramic, even the steel cables are partially renewed. We also went to Malo Kladivo, then back to the saddle and along unmarked path to Planina Šijo. The shelter was closed. Only a half-hour road walk back to Planina Pungrat awaited us.

Conditions on Košuta were slightly better than on KSA, but nevertheless in the afternoon when we were already at Matizovec it started pouring.
The path along the Košuta ridge towards Veliko Kladivo is very poorly marked, I mean especially the markings at the summit itself, since it was our first time on Košuta in that direction, we were really in a dilemma where to go down, on the rock only faded inscription ŠKrbina, where I was more guessing what it should say, and no direction sign, true the path is trodden towards Šija ...
but no headache now - yes map in hand ... that one really stayed home.

Matizovec-Kofce gora-Kladivo-Škrbina-Tegoška gora-Macesnovec.
From the Macesnovec ridge I descended with three other hikers along an unmarked path down almost to Tegoška Planina and then via Planina Pungrat and Šija back home below Kofce.
Below the Kladivo summit a man noticed five or six dead sheep. Probably struck by lightning the previous evening.
Otherwise a beautiful sunny day with some wind on the Košuta ridge.

LP everyone.

Correction. From Macesnovec down it wasn't an unmarked path at all (so no one looks for it) but we just went freely down to Tegoška planina.

Today I did a circular route from Planina Pungrat to Škrbina, to Veliko and Malo Kladivo, descent to Šija and back to start.
The access road from Pungrat to Šija was snowy, so I didn't drive further with the car. The ascent and descent path itself was snowy, in places it sank quite well, the summit ridge was almost bare. Crampons and ice axe stayed in the backpack.

On Sunday 16.10. we ascended in foggy morning from Matizovec farm past Kofce first to Veliko Kladivo. The path was bare, only small snow patches to cross. From Kladivo we continued along the ridge towards Veliki vrh. The path was partly muddy due to melting snow. On the summit we were alone, perhaps because of the fog rising from the valley that occasionally covered the Košuta peaks.

Kofce - Šija - Kladivo - along the ridge over Kofce Gora - Veliki Vrh - Kofce

From Kofce to Šija and to the forest border the snow is soft and doesn't hold human weight, but since there's not much, you sink about 30 cm, higher up there's less, in places windblown and icy on the edge, crampons recommended. Track from Kladivo to Kofce Gora is made, further the path is quite comfortably trodden by numerous predecessors. For possible ski touring pleasures, yesterday almost more suitable eastern flank from Vel.vrh to forest than the one under Kladivo or along the ridge under Kofce Gora, where lack of snow is obvious.

Along Košuta ridge, from Veliki vrh, to ?
Can someone list all peaks in order for me, as this part is unknown to me. And can they be traversed in winter too, in summer it seems in one day.
Thanks.

I'd also like this info. Roughly how much time to traverse the whole ridge? Of course in dry conditions. Could be a very nice route from Veliki vrh to the end of the ridge.
Thanks.

Košuta ridge is a phenomenal tour in summer, even better in early autumn. Can be done in one day if well organized. Here I'll give info from own experiences.
Košuta ridge is about 11 km long. For traversing there are two variants, or a third one just for racers with horse stamina.

1. Variant: in the afternoon drive to Matizovec, overnight in hut at Kovce and start early morning. If enough time before sleep climb to V. vrh, so morning go to Kofce gora and along ridge ahead over Skrbina to K. turn. Descent to lower Dolga njiva and to parking where someone waits with car.

2. Variant: If not possible to organize transport from parking under S. Dolga njiva. Then take sleeping bag and bivouac night somewhere on lower Dolga njiva, and return to Kofce in morning.
Unfortunately on lower Dolga njiva no possibility for bivouac in closed space. There urgently need to make some wooden bivouac.

Time needed for whole ridge ca. 10-12 h, with breaks, sightseeing, photos.
Need good fitness and stable weather for whole tour. If thunderstorm catches you, retreat problematic.
Info subjective, all depends on individual, some go slow and enjoy, others faster, and fitness.
Third variant only for racers. If want to return same day to Kofce, note path rises moderately, stamina burned and not easy.
As noted, all subjective and approximately feasible under given conditions.

@zdomec, thanks for these very useful infosnasmeh. That variant to overnight at Kofce is ok, although 10-12 hours walking isn't a big deal. We've walked longer already.
