I too was yesterday first time on Stol, start from Koroška Bela. Late morning new snow unpleasantly southern, just on the edge that below 1800m would need crampons. Some parts to summit also icy, gusts of wind well covered made tracks, esp. below summit.
View sadly somewhat impaired, wind so strong we stayed on top only about 15 min, and even then almost frostbite on hands  .

Up to Valvasor it's completely dry. The path was b.p. yesterday and nicely passable.

For going to Stol, two ice axes are never needed, except from Celovška koča.

For Stol, a hiking ice axe is enough. The route technically ranks among the less demanding winter ascents, but don't underestimate it. The most annoying part may be the steepness and icy base to Prižnica and beyond - the intermediate section of the Žirovnica path from Valvasor hut. Once on the ridge, the path to the saddle between Mali and Veliki Stol is more comfortable. For more details, see hribi.net; you can also do a loop (via Zabreška dol past Prešeren hut).

Not much, anyway mostly blows away right away, it'll hold if you don't weigh exactly 150kg Crampons for better feel.

Don't go via Zabreška dol while there's still snow there. This year too much, then it sinks to your ass, not to mention crossing steep grass. Zabreška for descent when dry.

Does snow hold on Žirovnica path, but not on Zabreška path? Bongo and lencka, are both writing from your own recent experience? Many thanks for the additional info.

Yesterday (22.4.) sinking max 20cm... on Žirovnica trampled footsteps, easier up than Zabreška.

sAleska, I somewhat doubt that Lencka writes about her own experiences from last week. Mine are quite fresh (pics from mid-week). I did the descent (with winter gear of course) via Zabreška, turned down after first slide and lower from it to Betonska koča. Lencka is right on general info, but surely it doesn't sink to ass, because not much snow from hut down. On Zabreška normal from slide onwards no fresh tracks, on Žirovnica you have nice trail by now. Good luck

Yes, Žirovnica normal, even without crampons it goes when snow softens. With car to Valvazorja.
