KRANJSKA REBER, 1435 meters DRIVE BY CAR: On 02.11.2007 I went to Kranjska Reber from the direction of Kamnik. I drove along the bypass past Kamnik and before the end of Kamnik there is a left turn from the main road, with a sign for KAMNIŠKA BISTRICA, VELIKA PLANINA. Then drive 600 meters to a roundabout, where you turn right towards KAMNIŠKA BISTRICA, VELIKA PLANINA, GORNJI GRAD. Drive 15 km along this road to the ČRNIVEC pass, where on the right you will see a large and nicely arranged guesthouse building and also a gravel parking lot. PATH FROM STARTING POINT: From the parking lot at ČRNIVEC pass, cross the road and enter the forest, where you will see two hiking signposts. One says Veliki Rogac, Lepenatka, Vrh Kašne planine (my goal) and the other Pl. Ravni, Pl. Travnik, Dom na Menini planini. Here go left uphill. You will see hiking markers on the tree right after the sign and continue uphill following the markers, of which there are plenty and you can't get lost to the top. The book Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe by Andrej Stritar says the path is poorly marked, but that was no longer valid during my visit. On the way up you will cross the gravel forest road three times. I crossed it first after 15 minutes of walking, between first and second 10 minutes, and between second and third about 5 minutes. From the third crossing to the top I needed 35 minutes. The path mostly goes through spruce forest and is very nice and not steep, before the summit you first encounter mountain beech forest and at the end meadow. From the starting point at Črnivec I walked continuously and took 1 hour and 5 minutes for the path. At the top I was pleasantly surprised by a small pond, like larger ones I've seen on Pohorje. You can see a few more such ponds on the descent from the top towards the shepherd's hut. In addition, from Kranjska Reber you can see all the highest peaks of Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe. To the NE you see Rogatec and Lepenatka, to the NW Velika Planina, Grintovec, Skuta, Planjava, Ojstrica... The trip is very suitable for the whole family, you can do it in summer too (much of the path will protect you from the heat with forest) and also in winter. Since I already knew one path, I decided to descend back to the starting point via the path past the shepherd's hut on Kašna planina (by the way, Kranjska reber is the peak, Kašna planina seems to be the meadow directly below the peak), as suggested in the aforementioned book I used on this trip. From the top of Kranjska Reber I went north and after 10 minutes reached the shepherd's hut. As previously written, I saw a few more small water ponds on this path that can nicely surprise the eye. In front of the hut there is a bench where you could eat something with the family, no shepherd was around (didn't see cows either; obviously the grazing season is long past). From there I looked around a bit and southwards (about 20 meters from the hut) spotted a forest road and was sure it was the one suggested by the author of the book Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe. I walked along it south for about 5 minutes, then it ended and I came to a wire fence separating the meadow from the forest. From there a narrow path was visible ahead (width of one hiker) and I continued south and slightly downhill along it. The longer I walked, the clearer it was that I was not on the right path. But no panic, said good soldier Švejk. I decided to continue the path by always going slightly downhill and always south. So I had a very nice experience walking on paths used by forest animals and off-trail. This adventure lasted about 30 minutes, then I reached the gravel forest road that told me I was on the right path to civilization. Another about 15 minutes along this road and I reached the place where I crossed this same gravel forest road on the way up and thus "tied the sausage". From there I descended to the starting point along the same path I took uphill earlier. For the path from the shepherd's hut to the starting point at Črnivec I needed 1 hour and 10 minutes. So I do not recommend the path I descended to children and those who don't feel good about uncertainty of maybe getting lost. But if you want to experience adventure on unmarked terrain too, go ahead boldly, as you can't get lost if you follow the rule of going along the foot of the hill always south and descending all the time. At Črnivec pass you can also see a monument telling that on 16.6.1942 fighters of the Kamnik Battalion destroyed one of the first occupier posts in Gorenjska and Štajerska, and partisan Pirš Rudi also fell in this battle. Good luck. My effective walking time: 2 hours and 15 minutes Starting point elevation: 902 meters Kamnik Peak elevation: 1435 meters Used literature: book Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe, author Andrej Stritar, Sidarta publisher Also recommended is the map Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe 1:50,000, but I didn't have it with me, as the book was completely sufficient. (if we forget that I pleasantly got lost on the way back)
