After work. Fast pace, even faster heart. Will I make it above the fog? Maybe catch the sunset? Above Kališče it opened up ... and how! Ah, phones.

To not just read crap about snow clearing from the winter room at Kamniško sedlo, I went in the afternoon to Kališče and Bašelj Peak. From Kališče onwards it's winter; the track is slightly drifted but doesn't sink much. The northeaster chased the clouds. Views excellent.

Start from Mače on foot along the partly icy road. Higher up the path becomes hiking trail and onwards trodden all the way to Kališče. Real winter fairytale, as some say. From Kališče onwards to Bašelj Peak along the track. At the summit cold and windy, in shelter a bit nicer. Didn't try Storžič, had ice axe and crampons. Someone pulled the track only a little above the saddle, then no more traces of continuation. Conditions not great, wind-packed terrain in the gullies, snow probably hasn't been that much for a long time. Descent from Kališče along the ridge path and my own way through steep forest back to the start. To Kališče it's always good to have microspikes.

Path to Bašelj Peak trampled - snow sinking over knees. Path to Kališče well trodden, microspikes recommended.

Conditions yesterday:
Path to Bašelj Peak from Kališče well packed if you stick to it A little left or right and it sinks at least to the knees. Snow depth at least 1.3 m (hiking pole sinks completely into the snow).
Microspikes useful from 1100 m upwards.

Today to Bašelj Peak via Kališče. From the stream the path was icy in the morning, higher up dry hard snow. From Kališče the track is visible but drifted with snow. On the ridge it was really windy. From the top I tried the ridge to Mačensko sedlo, but after a few meters it cracked three times under my feet, finger-wide fissures. I turned back dozens of meters to Mačensko sedlo. Even there not the best feeling, new snow had slid, some slabs. Nicest part of the path was the walk from Mačensko sedlo over Suha. Left side windblown, no sinking. Lower part sun pressed, slush forming. Still much snow, possible to ski to lower cable car station. At the summit I photographed the hut girl in a green jacket. Nice picture. Yesterday visited Bašelj Peak. 100 meters below Kališče icy patches start, after Kališče sinking snow. It was nice.

The day before yesterday by road bike to Jezerca below Krvavec in short sleeves, yesterday by mountain bike to Jakob above Preddvor in fog and rain, today ... in very strong wind and snow. Nothing to it, rich spring.

Today on Bašelj Peak. Snow starts ~200 elevation meters below Kališče, today quite southern snow on the path.
