Access to the starting point:
a) Leave the Zagreb-Split motorway at the Karlovec / Karlovac exit. Through the town, follow the signs for Split and Slunj. After Karlovac, drive through Jelase, Vukmanički Cerovac and Tušilović. In Tušilović turn left towards Vojnić. When you reach Vojnić, you will see tourist signs for the Muljava Hunting Lodge, which you will reach after a 10-minute drive. Park at the Hunting Lodge.
b) From Bela krajina, drive through Border crossing Metlika to Croatia, where follow the signs for Karlovec / Karlovac, then follow description a.
Path description:
From the Muljava hunting lodge, head south along the asphalt road. You will soon reach the first crossroads, where you cross a small stream (the path leads straight past the partisan hospital).
Continue along the stream, which you cross again a little further on.
The way ahead begins to climb relatively steeply, and higher up we cross the forest cart track, above which the steep path leads us to a ridge.
The path becomes rockier, the steepness begins to subside and we soon reach the summit of Little Velebit.
There is a slight descent from the top, and when the path stops descending, we reach a small lake. After the lake the path becomes steep again and we reach the summit of Veliki Velebit (the summit is not marked).
After the peak, we reach a forest road, where we go left and the path leads us to a crossroads.
Continue into the forest, following the path that leads along the boundary between the young and older forest.
There is a slight descent through a young, thick forest, and when the descent ends, we reach an asphalt road, and soon we see a large monument in front of us.
From the asphalt road go right for a short distance, then follow cart track for a minute or so, then there is a short steep climb ending at the ruins of the former monastery (by the ruins there is a trail branch to the grave of King Petar Svačić, 10 minutes).
At the ruins, go left and within a minute of further walking you will reach the top of Mali Petrovac. The summit is in the forest and has no view.
