On Sunday 4.11.07 we plan to go to Trupejevo poldne. What are the conditions like or will they be? Is there any snow yet and if there is, is it dangerous? We're all going for the first time.
Thanks for the replies

There will probably be snow since it's snowing today. If there's no large amount of snow it's not dangerous, only the last meters of the path run along the ridge. If there are no tracks, orientation is difficult. Good luck, J.

If there's snow (not just whitened) and it's not trodden, maybe it's better to stop already at Malovškem poldnevu, since just before arriving at Trupejevo summit there's a narrow exposed part so no one slips - you'll see how it is.

Quite a few mountain goers got fooled by weathermen today, quite a few climbed to Trupejevo poldne too. Those used to rising early and reaching the goal at least by midday somehow really blew it (sadly we were the majority) - wherever the eye reached there was a thick cloud layer, nothing showed it'd clear soon. Half an hour after leaving the summit it started clearing fast, another half hour blue sky without a cloudzmeden. Well at least the downhill path was nicer, esp with stop on meadow with marmots. A little later less pleasant meeting too - you can still meet snakes in mountainseek.
Larches in last path section already slightly turning autumn colors.

Besides not best summit weather I'd mention one big nuisance not found in descriptions yet: summit thickly covered with sheep droppings, forget sitting there enjoying view maybe snacking...

Has anyone been up there today? I assume there is surely some snow already, and since it's my first time going, I'm wondering if a track is already waiting for me? zmeden

Yesterday was another of those days that awaken the imagination. I climbed from Srednji vrh along the railway to this wonderful viewpoint. In between, I detoured to the nearby Lepi vrh. Conditions excellent, powder snow. From 1400 m altitude much warmer than in the valley. At the summit windless, views unique, met fewer visitors than fingers on two hands. Returned the same way. Best regards!

Wow, what nice pictures, that must have been a pleasure in such weather. Since I plan to go to Trupejevo poldne sometime in spring or summer, I'm curious what this mentioned "railway" is and which lake in Austrian Carinthia is on the 8th photo and approx. how much time it takes to the peaks from Srednji vrh. Somewhere I heard that you can reach Trupejevo poldne also from Korensko sedlo to the right and then some time by car through the forest. Does anyone know this path? Thanks for the answers and happy 2009 to all who visit this really good portal.

The lake is called in Slovenian Baško jezero, in German something like Facken see (correct me, someone who knows German). By the lake lies the village Bače (behind the lake). Somewhat to the left of the picture lies the town Beljak. I went late autumn with a small group from Srednji vrh via Hladnik to Kresišče, Maloški and Trupejevo poldne via Blekova planina to Železnica and past Jureževa planina back to Srednji vrh. No path is marked, but all are well made and walkable. To Železnica you get from the road Podkoren - Korensko sedlo, at altitude a bit over 1000m - I think the gravel road is good 10km, to altitude a bit over 1500m. Interesting is also the half-hour detour to Blekova planina.

Today - 26.2.09.:
Trodden, frozen - walking on top, almost no sinking, no avalanche danger at all, quite windy at the summit, huge amounts of snow, no skiers, one hiker.
No dangers anywhere, weather o.k., views wonderful.
I recommend!!

Start from Srednji vrh over Železnica where the path is well trodden, but due to thawing towards the summit the trail is lost. Orientationally undemanding. Descent to the other side past the hut by Lepi vrh, and approx. 4km forest road along Hladnik to the starting point. For assistance, visible tracks of ski tourers.
Snow transformed, so walking is fairly stable.

I'm curious about the conditions from Srednji vrh over Železnica. Is it possible just in boots or does it sink too much? Do I need crampons, gaiters? I'd go on Wednesday, when it's nice. Thanks

Trupejevo poldne - I only know that for those wanting to go over Železnica from Korensko sedlo, the road is quite poor, after 6-7 km there's a rockslide too, so it's not drivable at all. Shame.

Mid-May I'm leading a trip to Trupejevo poldne, curious how much snow is still around there and what to expect for May 15?

Thanks for the reply!

Snow has already melted quite a bit in western Karavanke too. Some will probably remain in the gully above Železnica, above L.K. Current picture of snow conditions at Trupejevo poldne from Vrtaški vrh.

Based on experience from (almost) neighboring Dovška baba a week ago, which has similar elevation, significant snow cover starts around 1500 m, more snow from 1700 m (at 1900 m about a meter). But given current and forecast weather, I expect south slopes of western Karavanke to clear quickly, especially around May 15.

Hello!
On Sunday (23.5.) we're heading to Trupejevo and Maloško poldne. Has anyone been on the same tour recently?

Today despite changeable weather we visited Trupejevo poldne (1931 m), then continued to Maloško poldne (1823 m) on Austrian side, then also to Kresišče (1839 m high). On the way from Srednji vrh of course some snow appears on shady sides, but no problem. At the end it got us a bit wet. Super tour without markers - good orientation needed !!LP
