Toll booths on Vršič and in Vrata

Haha, I often remember this scene from the Parks & Recreation series when I see new municipal tricks on how to additionally fleece by restricting access to mountains. I wonder when something like that will really occur to them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiXQu0Yqr9o Drop in a token... park a car Drop in another token... take a walk for 1 h Drop in yet another token... look at Triglav for 30 seconds

Eh, Matija, I was just getting used to this hustle with these Gorenjci. I park the car almost on the main road, the van takes me and brings me back, I doze during the ride, save 20km on the odometer for my pony. There are many mountains, many starting points, greedy municipal types like Kranjska Gora, Bohinj..., won't get a dime from me.

And this expert can't help but say this: I agree that for visiting Triglav we would need certain restrictions, which is already well solved on Tre Cime, Mont Blanc and Matterhorn, where visit is necessary with a mountain guide. Of course this is not true at all.

One of the options to reduce the mass visit to the mountains is to return to the beginning. That huts become again what they were originally intended for. Roof over the head, bed and hot meal. Plus WC and running water for personal hygiene. In the hut you get a bed with mattress, sleeping bag you have with you. Breakfast bread, butter, jam, coffee or tea. Lunch/dinner stew, polenta, pasta. Beer, wine, juice and bottled water at moderate price. That's it, enough for two- and multi-day tours. By the way there will be less visits, because no more pancakes, schnitzels and more. Plus sleeping without reservations. Rooms or beds are rented on the spot, when you arrive at the hut you choose one of the beds that are still available. As soon as all beds are occupied, mats are brought from the cellar and in the evening auxiliary common beds are arranged in the dining room. Actually this "modesty" of the offer and the possibility that you will sleep in the dining room and not in a double room would deter many from the intended tour, it's not for everyone anyway.

I remember years ago it was like you describe. All those who didn't get a place to sleep, we paid half the price of sleeping and they brought mats to the dining room. There were quite a few of us. It wasn't bad at all to sleep like that. No one was left outside. At Pogačnik Hut on Kriške plateaus.

Fewer visits are only where there are no huts. And there the internet connection to the world is usually not well covered. I notice that with neighbors. Regarding that sleeping on corridors, on landings, on dining room floor,…I quickly had enough of that and preferred to sleep outside.

@jax I also read that article today, and thought similarly. @turbo, it reads really nice, especially the last paragraph reads attractively. It seems to me that the visit to the mountains would be reduced only by closing huts in the high mountains, and maybe only modest shelters would remain until they burn down, like on Korošica, or collapse. Only historical memory would remain. After all, it will surely happen anyway, tell me I'm a pessimist! Nature will take its own, mountain loners will get back their space and peace. Man is just someone who passes by!

@turbo To be honest, what is - except for reservations - so different in today's huts? OK, some have arranged rooms, but to me it seems that the main offer of mountain huts (especially the "real" ones, i.e. high alpine with at least a few hours access from the highest road) regarding accommodation are still common dorms. Although both exist. Regarding food I don't even remember them offering much more than what you listed, maybe some dessert, but no special choices. Which is right. Regarding the reservation system I absolutely agree. Recently in the Weekly several keepers clearly said that the thing is too rigid and they coped better with the previous system. This system benefits only PZS and foreign tourist agencies, not the employed and hut visitors. Oh, and by the way, one more thing - this year for the first time in my life I reserved accommodation in a hut in the Swiss Alps. They didn't require any prepayment by any chance. Just by the way.

Also I think that huts that are basically already inns are the main source of those Sunday strollers. Many people don't go hiking at all where there is no hut with some extensive culinary offer. And as expected - where there is no hut, or where it's long and steep to hike, there is usually luckily the most peace.

Come on guys (miri not flying at you, who posted last ... The same ones for years whining and complaining on this forum about the same things. At the same time nonstop emphasizing that you don't go to Bohinj at all, don't pay tolls and parking fees, never overnight in our ugly huts where everything is crap anyway and food too expensive, you go to mountains mostly to Carnic Alps and Dolomites or Austria and of course not included in usurious PZS, but registered with neighbors. Of course you do something at home all the time: use PZS trails and park two turns lower than us others and tremble that there will be a bill upon return. And as my friend from Trenta would say for such: What do we locals have from these one-day smugglers? Nothing. They just shit in the morning somewhere near the parking, then before going back throw an empty beer can into the bushes. Even if I never see them again" Well now of course announce yourselves in the established order

Why should your friend from Trenta have anything from people who go from there to the mountains? After all, we have the right to move within our own country. When he comes to Ljubljana, I also have no benefit from him, but we still don't limit access to newcomers and allow them parking at normal prices where conditions allow.

Korl, your blog is a bit unpolished and robust. Not suitable for tender and sensitive mountaineering ears and eyes. A bit rough for us polished and sissified and fine (oh and all) mountaineers. Could at least wrap it all in cellophane and add some flower or praise. I'm a bit nervous and upset about your attitude to us fine and cool mountaineers. Loved going to Bohinj, but now I'll spend parking money elsewhere and treat myself to a sandwich and pure spring water!

Jusk, sandwich with polje is already quite a luxury variant. I'll rather save a bit and treat myself to prestigious salami brand Pasja radost. My grandpa mentioned this above-standard salami Pasja radost many times. For quenching thirst really store-brand industrial water on discount and sale!

Pasja radost is excellent, don't forget onion. If not in TNP where open fire prohibited, light some brush and grill it, that's when it really tastes
