From 29 to 31.08.2017 we hiked a large part of the Kamniško-Savinjski area. Start: Hut under Rinka waterfall, Frischauf Hut, Turski žleb, Koroška Rinka - Križ, Skuta, Štruca, Dolgi hrbet, Mlinarsko sedlo, Grintovec, Cojzova Hut (sleep), Ovčja čer, Kokrška and Jezerska Kočna, Vratca, Češka hut, Žrelo, Kranjska hut (sleep), Jezersko and Savinjsko sedlo, Mrzla gora and descent past Frischauf and Rinka to the valley. First day mists chased us after the previous day's storm, the other two days quite hot and cloudless, scenic and few visitors except around Rinka - peace and quiet.

1.10. Skuta through Žmavcarje and via ferrata. There snow patches start with nice steps kicked in. Crampons not needed, ice axe useful. Descent towards Veliki podi and Kokrsko sedlo. Again southern snow patches, some caution needed.

Great, but I don't know where that ferrata is even though I've been there many times from all sides

Yesterday through Žmavcarje to Bivouac under Skuta, continuing over some patches of firm snow to Skuta and then also Štruca on the way, and descend via Pode to Bivouac under Grintavec and Kokrško sedlo. Winter gear stayed in the backpack, a bit of caution was needed.

Has anyone climbed Skuta these days? Planned route is Suhadolnik - Taška - saddle - Kemperlet bivouac - Štruca - Skuta. What are the conditions, any peculiarities? Thanks for replies.

As much as I saw today from Koča there is snow from Štruca towards Skuta summit. If I judge by conditions on Kočne it's about 5 cm, not frozen and easily passable with caution.

I was on Skuta last weekend. There is one snow patch though and problematic - to cross it, caution is of course not superfluous.

We went from bivouac under Grintovec to Skuta and then down to Bivouac under Skuta. I would advise the reverse route, as from Skuta to bivouac below it is quite steep.

Thanks to both for the info. From Skuta I'll head back down the same path, so back towards Štruca and the bivouac under Grintovec, as that's still probably the technically least demanding and least exposed route. If the path over Velike Podi seems too demanding uphill, I might detour on descent and at the junction below Štruca turn towards Mlinarsko sedlo then down to bivouac. That would extend the route by about 700 m, less demanding than descent over Velike Podi. Anyway, that's it.

Robi2017, I went on Saturday on this route. To Štruca no problems, then some snowfields to Skuta, but crampons stayed in backpack, nicely doable without. Safe steps!

Thanks Anansie, I tackled it today. I was angry at myself for hauling crampons, though two answered my question that there's no need. But mountains are like that; one cold night is enough for snow to be frozen in shady spots in the morning. Today it wasn't so. Little snow actually, where it is, it wasn't frozen. Maybe early morning, but by noon, when I reached the first serious snowfields to Skuta, the snow was just soft enough to walk nicely on it without sinking. Actually, the snow was very handy, as the sun was scorching today, thirst was bad, I used snow for cooling and filling the bottle. Otherwise, snow conditions on Skuta are clearly visible from the photo below.

Otherwise, the tour done as planned. Path well marked, only in wall below Štruca need to keep eyes open so not to stray (talked to one such today), and on screes marker stones sometimes buried in gravel, but path visible where it leads. Protections mostly in good condition, only on ascent over Taška ladder one rung missing (no issue), and on descent from Malih vratc one piton loose (I tested if there's risk it would pull out, but luckily it still holds well).

Also: on descent I found a sports shirt on the path between Suhadolnik and Cojzova koča. I think it was lost today, as it wasn't there in the morning. Whoever misses it, message me on PM.

On Wednesday I was up. Suhadolnik-Kokrsko sedlo-Veliki Podi-Škrbina-Štruca-Skuta-Veliki Podi-Mlinarsko sedlo-Grintovec-Kokrsko sedlo-Suhadolnik. Morning gusts of unpleasant cold wind in the sun, so a few visitors to these mountains got quite chilled. Afternoon on Grintovec the wind died down, completely clear day. Conditions described by predecessor. Under Skuta need to cross snowfield twice, iced over from wind. Little snow still right under Grintovec, where most of the path to the last protections is snow-covered. Otherwise phenomenal views, chamois visible too.

Yesterday on Skuta. Started from Konec via Gamsov skret. From Veliki podi along the path over Sleme I traversed to the screes below Skuta wall and then straight up a small path to the entry of the secured path. From Skuta summit down and then to Štruca and then across the ledge under Dolgi hrbet down to screes. Down the screes straight (at the end about three meters of easier jump that needs to be climbed) and on to the path Kokrsko sedlo - Kamniško sedlo. Again over Sleme to Bivak pod Skuto and then over Žmavčarje to Konec.

Conditions ideal for walking, on the traverse path some snow, but no obstacle. A bit different on the secured path through Skuta wall. The path, although it doesn't look so from below, is covered with snow for almost half. Some good soul (probably more) made footsteps that helped quite a bit, but they were icy and sometimes broke through. I hesitated and finally decided not to put on crampons, for ice axe use there's otherwise too little snow. Luckily almost all belays are visible, so it somehow went.

On the lower part of the last wire section below the summit there's a huge rock (about one and a half meters long, three-quarters of a meter wide) with marking and bracket that broke off and leans on the slope, held only by the cable. Very, very dangerous!

The ledge under Dolgi hrbet has some snow here and there, but winter gear not needed. Over Gamsov skret in the forested part knee-deep leaves in some places, so descent on this path can be quite annoying. On Žmavčarji, where the path is already very trodden, fewer leafy areas, and leaves are trampled. On the same path in the jump the missing hunter's wire rope someone kindly replaced with about 15 meters of 8mm rope, it'll do for a few months. Down in the forest two of the three wire ropes are torn off and dangerous if you grab thinking the other end is attached.

On Skuta I met three hikers, one overtook me in Gamsov skret, saw some from afar around bivak pod Skuto. In the afternoon some pellets of graupel fell on Skuta and around, otherwise nice November day.
Occasional snow on the cross path is not a serious obstacle.1

Dear hribi.net portal user,
We path markers often follow posts on this portal, ensuring that paths are normally passable and safe in good weather conditions. The statement "Very, very dangerous!" is very alarming, so we asked for opinions from hikers of two groups who yesterday descended via Žmavčarje and had Skuta behind them, having previously read your article. According to statements from both groups, the protection is stable and no visible damage at the spot in the picture, and the slab doesn't hang on the cable, a little above that spot there is indeed one pulled-out peg due to lightning strike. From here I ask others who will cross this section for their opinion, which you can send directly to PZS - poskodbe.poti@pzs.si. As soon as possible, one of the path markers from PD Kamnik, who maintain this path, will also inspect the spot in the photo.
Safe steps

Dear Mr. Alojz,

I gladly believe and appreciate that you follow posts on hribi.net, but in the above case I myself sent two emails to PD Kamnik and one to poskodbe.poti@pzs.si a few days ago. The danger seemed too great to me to irresponsibly limit myself only to a post on hribi.net.

With Mr. Zdravko from PD Kamnik we spoke already Friday afternoon and tried to analyze the situation over the phone. Our common stance was that the critical spot needs to be professionally inspected as soon as possible.

Regarding the danger itself: as I wrote, the broken slab leans on the slope. Attached to it is the cable that runs above it through eyes of I think three pegs (one pulled out), and above it's connected with a link to the highest peg. The rope seemed extremely taut to me, which made me think the rock has slid down a bit over time and leaned on the cable. The thing is of course stable, it can't be otherwise. But so that the slab weighing a ton or more doesn't crash into the valley, in my opinion only one single peg is responsible. That's surely a sign for alarm!

Let me add that I extremely respect the work of path markers, I myself walked around paths with brush and paint many years ago, and also drilled many holes for pegs.
Best regards!

p.s.
In the message I sent you last time to poskodbe.poti@pzs.si there are also my contact details. Call me anytime you want, and we can talk about this matter and gladly about something else too.
