Yesterday 5.4.09: On the road to the forest turnoff "universal flood". Further heavy sinking (silver fir) thawed snow. Met some hikers with whom we agreed on the difficulty of walking on such a surface, no skiers. Ski slope at the top not operating. Dreiländerhütte - closed, lower Slovenian hut (house) at Tromeja open (SNP) from 10.-16. Weather was pleasant, views interesting in all directions.

Petelinjek and Peč surprised me strongly today with one of the nicest snowshoe tours since I snowshoe. After mounting skins in Villach I stop at Korensko sedlo and check where to go, left or right. Kamnati vrh offered steepness and dense spruce wood and seemingly less snow, so at first buildings on left (from our side), I turn past hidden house with wooden sign Mejaši into forest. From here after previous map check, I orient to gully and right away find path start on left. Follow it all to top. Path stretches incredibly nicely in switchbacks along ridge spur, in between clearings, then again through snowy tunnels of spruces, simply fantastic!. Suddenly a tree with two legs surprises me. When I hurried a bit past, I thought it was following me. I overcome Petelinjek ridge which drags on. From valley only barely 500m elevation, but path winding and no end. Still reached Petelinjek in 1.5 h pure walking. Then descent on ski slope to Peč, then back on very flat forest path around Kališje, where finally I join my tracks again. Started at 10:30, down at 15:30 with 45 min break. Quite long but beautiful tour. Warmly recommend to all snowshoers. Track now well visible. Despite dense fog on top, light setting sun greeted me at Šmarna gora. Lp-Rok

The Rateče - Tromeja path is well trodden, doesn't sink in and nothing icy, sledding possible on the road. Was up there yesterday morning.

Has anyone perhaps jumped to Peč in the past week? Mainly interested in road condition/suitability for sledding.

On Saturday 17 July we headed to Tromeja. From home we continued on shorter and steeper path along the border with Italy in switchbacks. At the top (Peč) there is stamp and logbook. View was nice to Dobrač and Beljak. Then we descended to Dreiländerhütte and returned to start on forest road. At the hut on Tromeja they were friendly and have good struklji

Hello! On 21. 8. 2010 we were with the family at Tromeja. I spoiled the nice day myself, as I forgot my wallet at the top (right from the border crossing itself between SLO and A). If someone found it by chance, please let me know at mjuvan@yahoo.com. Many thanks for your help.

Since the forecast for a nice number of next days is not very promising , we took advantage of today's "time out" regarding snowfall and went "moving". Curiosity wouldn't let us rest either – we had to test our first touring gear and of course add a pebble to the mosaic of our completely beginner touring ski experiences. Of course we chose a completely safe route for this time and also completely easy. We parked in Rateče and a few steps further we were already on skis. The road was plowed, but yesterday or overnight it got newly whitened and it went great. At the beginning we even had sun , with altitude the snow depth increased, but sun was less and less... At the intersection above the hut we decided for the longer detour and here the fun began ...we were breaking trail full on, new snow well over half a meter...well, most of the work was cavalierly done by my better half , I was just occasionally helping, also to get a feel for how this track making works ... At the top there were no views, but we didn't expect them either...Other visitors Peč didn't welcome today, but we had quite a few close encounters with roe deer. On the way back it occasionally cleared up and the views we got added the icing on the cake to the nice day...

Gita, photos are nice and the weather was caught at the right moment... Breaking trail full on is always a strenuous experience...

Yes, Kozorog is strenuous but also a nice experience when you push into untouched whiteness...completely something else than somewhere where everything is already trampled and holey...

Please for some information, if anyone knows whether both huts at Tromeja will be open this weekend 1st and 2nd January; Dreiländerhütte and of course our hut at Tromeja?
