Mrzla gora

More of us will go (at least expressed the wish). Some interested people reported who haven't been to the top yet. So planning for next month. From M. škaf to the top and descent to Mrzla dol. If you're interested, I'll let you know when we choose the date. It will be over the weekend, because son is studying in Ljubljana during the week.

Yesterday did the tour Matkov kot - Matkov škaf - Mrzla gora - Matkov škaf - Matkov kot.
The path is completely dry, except at the škaf you have to decide whether to cross it or go under the snow but you need to watch the wet rocks at the exit.
From škaf nicely right along the path that leads you nicely ahead, after a short ascent between grass and scree you reach the first cable where one peg is pulled out. Then continue along the path past two nicely visible larches and reach scree up which you climb to the top, on the left you see pines, under them there's still some snow, these pines are for orientation because when you reach the top via scree you have to cross right along the ledge to the pines - some cable, also torn, and three pegs. From pegs onwards only along the ledge to the pine that's visible at the end of the ledge - because from pegs onwards no markings are visible. When you reach the pine, the path turns upwards - lots of visible pegs. At the top of the pegs the path turns left and slowly ascends between pines and scree towards Latvica - path nicely visible. At the top of Latvica continue straight up because you have to get to the other side, where you get the view of the mountains above Okrešljem. Then turn right and move to the top of Mrzla gora along the ridge, from which you nicely see Latvica. There's also one longer cable and one shorter cable and some pegs for orientation to the top - markings poorly visible.
Nice regards and hope you succeednasmeh

How is it on Mrzla gora. This year I started mountaineering and to test my abilities I summited Mangart (Slovenian/Italian route), Jalovec, Triglav (via Plemenice and back via little and big Vrbanova špica), now heading to Mrzla gora. They say it's a demanding tour because no protections. Interested in comparison to the summited peaks. Thanks and best.

geppo has already said a lot on the previous page.
Compared to the peaks you summited I can say that protections on Mrzla gora are very very few (from Matkov kot I counted 4 cables), the mountain itself is very crumbly, so great caution needed especially if someone behind you on the path. From Matkov kot markings are very lacking and also very poorly visible.
I climbed from Okrešelj years ago, as far as I remember little protection and lots of climbing on rocks.
Recommend ascent from Okrešlju.
The mountains you summited have compared to Mrzla gora very well done paths - lots of cables and pegs, on Mrzla gora lots of sense for orientation needed both ascent and descent and especially feel for footholds and handholds.
Otherwise wish you nice ascent it's not that bad, just warning needed.nasmeh

On Saturday I set off, from Kamniška Bistrica to Rinke, to Kranjsko polje to Koroska, from there descended towards Ledine or Okrešlje through Zleb (supposedly called Kriški zleb), from there a bit down, then up again towards Mrzla gora. Well, yeah, it's not much protected, but no problem. Personally I prefer to climb a bit, to feel the rock under fingers, right? Unfortunately, except on Kranjska Rinka, everywhere else fog. From Mrzla gora I descended the same side, then to Savinjsko sedlo, from there detour to Jezersko Velika Baba (up Austrian side, descent Slovenian). Then to koča on Ledinah, where we were, with the keeper, alone in the hut. And of course I slept quite a bit, tour over Rinke, then Mrzla gora, then to Baba, wasn't so small for me, since from Kamniška Bistrica already some walking. Shame about the fog. .

Is there any snowfield or snow patch on the path from Okrešlju?

On 10.6 on the way to Matkov Škaf we unanimously concluded that at least from this side we won't go to Mrzla gora for some time, because it's all full of snowfields up to the top. Probably less snow from Okrešlju, but without helmet, crampons and ice axe no way.

On the path from Okrešlju there is a large snowfield 30 minutes above the hut. But today the snow was soft and there were no problems. And right before the entrance to the wall there is a snowfield but you don't go over it.

So from Okrešlju to Mrzla gora in about a week it will be passable without problems?nasmeh

It's already passable now just the snow needs to be soft. Careful there's snow right before the entrance. Better leave the poles below the wall. You cross a large snowfield twice but not dangerous if snow is soft.

Hello!

I'm wondering if anyone has hiked to Mrzla gora from Jezersko recently (where, from the above descriptions, I'm missing only the condition of the part from Ravenska Koča to Mrzli dol) and can say how passable it is due to snowfields - are crampons and ice axe still needed?

Thanks for any answers and safe steps to everyone!

I was on Mrzla gora from Jezersko on Sunday. Noteworthy snowfield only in Mrzli dol, but it was soft (ice axe and crampons stayed in the backpack)

Next Saturday, 10.7.2010, I plan to ascend to Mrzla gora from Okrešelj. I'm interested in the path condition along the western ridge and if snowfields are passable without crampons?

Thanks for info and lots of fun in the mountains!

As Jery described, on Wed 7.7 from the turnoff to the western ridge to the summit there was no snow, not even one handful. Good luck and be careful!

Can someone describe to me the path to Mrzla gora if I go past Okrešlja towards Savinjsko sedlo? It's very attractive to me but I don't know if it's very exposed. I would go from the other side. LP

From both sides it's airy and full of scree, so the bigger problem is getting down than up. You can find the description for the relevant part of the path (otherwise starting from Jezersko) on this page.

Snow is noteworthy only at Matkov Škaf anymore, but only a short section that can be easily crossed with a bit of caution without winter gear. First-hand info from today! velik nasmeh

Nice greetings from Zagreb to all hikers,

I'm interested in the conditions along the path to the top of Mrzla gora, is there snow and do I need to carry some winter gear?

Thanks in advance for the reply

In our mountains, both Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Julians, now only little snow left. Mostly short snow patches 10-20m still persist on north and west parts of mountains, and in heads of steep valleys and snow pockets-holes. In current high temperatures an ice axe is enough where we cross a snowfield on the path, later during the day the snow softens so much that on less steep snow patches with good runout it can be crossed with poles, with boots step by step several times kicking nice steps. Today I went to Razor from Vršič, where up under Planja saddle only some small snow patches left, which cause no problems.
