Lanževica

Yesterday on Lanževica, today a bit around Komna. To the Komna hut without snowshoes and skis, further towards Lanževica we used snowshoes, which are a welcome aid for these conditions.

Today quite a few snowshoers, skiers, even one hiker visited Lanževica, it was a beautiful day. Without snowshoes you sink quite a bit into the snow. At Komna as usual friendly service.

Winter fairy tale on the peaks around Komna also for hikers nasmeh. The hardened path can be walked without snowshoes until around 11 o'clock. Later it is no longer possible due to softened snow, unless someone wants to join the sinkhole club velik nasmeh. In current conditions, big crampons and ice axe can stay home for the ascent to Lanževica and Vrh nad Gracijo, small crampons à la Veriga are recommended for easier progression. The hut was full, parking in the valley packed to the last corner eek. In short ... Fairy tale with capital F nasmeh

Today via Komna and Lepa Komna plateau to Poljanica pasture. From there on very poorly visible path to Mala vrata saddle. A bit below it we turned right into rocky terrain where some cairns help. Through nice natural passages we reached the summit without problems, avoided scree completely. Descended back to saddle and then continued along ridge to Oslova škrbina and on to Lanževica summit. Then descent on marked path to valley where soaking feet in cold water felt good.

On Thursday towards evening (or last ascent already in real darkness) first to Komna to overnight, yesterday hiking/ski touring assault on Lanževica. Well, at least that was the plan. Then it adapted a bit to conditions.
Already on Thursday the hutkeeper said new snow is quite wet and probably bonded to base. And indeed no sharp separation between layers. Also quantity of new snow not that much.
Cloudy weather forecasted for whole day, but in morning sun still tried and shone through clouds a few times. Later no more.
Path to Bogatinsko sedlo dragged on. Once had to turn and take new direction. Snowshoes not really needed most of the time. Well, soon replaced by crampons which were more useful. At Bogatinsko sedlo west wind blowing. On Thursday apparently much stronger. And believable, quite some evidence left - icy slabs where all new snow blown away.
Further towards Lanževica (at least first part) path heavily iced. Mandatory ice axe and crampons, with touring skis no go like that. Well, in good weather some passage would be found, in fog not. So I continued alone. Fog getting thicker, old tracks lost (when visible only in ice), soon not even "boundaries" from Rapallo border visible, visibility down to 10m sometimes. Only way to summit actually take map and compass and go by azimuth keeping that indistinct ridge of course.
Well, after a while on one hump old tracks appear again (not just one person), but then they turn semicircle and all go back. Am I already at summit? Too quick somehow. When I start digging around a stone sticking from snow and dig out a cairn, I was pretty sure it's the real summit. And still pretty sure (not 100% mežikanje).
Descent of course back on my tracks and not a meter aside. Enough azimuth chasing with compass for the day. On descent thick fog lowered even more and now starting good 50m below Bogatinsko sedlo. Friend already long skied back to Komna. At Komna just beer and pancakes then back to coastal parts.

It might have dawned on both earlier that one doesn't normally walk the marked path here, but rather the valley. Well, nothing, but a bit of turning back was needed...5
from there it still looked like Lanževica would be completely unproblematic...6
....towards the saddle, fog was already gathering. Ice slabs visible in between7
1-2 cm thick ice crust on windblown sections. Here it was still brittle, higher up it easily held 100 kg (me with all gear:)8
the photo doesn't show it best...fresh snow here (wind-sheltered part) was about 15 cm, but no clear boundary between layers9

Yesterday I fulfilled my promise. Started at Savica, at Koča pod Bogatinom right into Lepa Komna and to Lanževica. Continued to Vrh nad Gracijo and descended to Bogatinsko sedlo. Followed by descent to Dom na Komni for coffee and to the valley, into real tourist frenzy. Lepa Komna doesn't leave a hiker indifferent, but I was early enough not to meet anyone.

Beautiful autumn days lure to the mountains. I decided to visit Lanževica. Hike start and end at Savica, past Dom na Komni and Koča pod Bogatinom, then right across Lepa Komna to the summit, descent to Bogatinsko sedlo and back to Komna and Savica.
Paths without peculiarities, we met only a few hikers, Dom na Komni is open.
Tour is undemanding, but drags on...mežikanje

Incredible how one post can stir the imagination so strongly that the snowshoe hike to Lanževica was instantly planned and executed on Saturdaynasmeh.
No Belke was visible on the top this time, but the effort with wide views was definitely 100x rewarded.

Across white expanses of Gracija valley our path wound, steeply ascended to Bogatinsko sedlo and then across rounded hummocks of Lanževica offering more views with every step and a snowy fairy tale began unfolding before our eyes, as the vistas were truly breathtaking.

On the whole path we met only one snowshoer who easily overtook us, but descended from the top just before our ascent.

The path was long and in this snow quite strenuous; if I had not been stubborn, I would have quit, but I would have missed so much beauty that I wouldn't have known about then.

Hard to leave this somewhat neglected peak, afternoon sun has its special charm indeed, but long path ahead that we finished at Savica around 20:00.

Very nice @ločanka, that Belka encouraged you to go on this beautiful path mežikanje
It is really quite strenuous in this southern snow, especially ascent to Bogatinsko sedlo worked me hard. You go a bit forward and a lot back, snowshoes slid in that steepness. View as you say rewards all effort nasmeh

Tadej12. 09. 2018 07:18:00
Yesterday I started at the lower cable car station on Vogel, walked along the road to Koča pri Savici, from there continued towards Komna and Bogatinsko sedlo. A little before the saddle I turned off the headlamp, then continued to Lanževica amid morning colors and chamois. From Lanževica I continued towards Velika Baba and Velika Montura and descended into the valley Za Lepočami. Then ascent to Bogatinsko sedlo and descent to Dom na Komni. From Komna I continued towards Vogel, to the starting point I descended via the abandoned path through Ražnova Suha.
The path through Ražnova Suha is hard to follow as tall grasses overgrow it, there aren't many fallen trees on the mentioned path.
Regards, Tadej
