this weekend we plan with the group (if weather permits) to Krniška Glavica. I haven't been there yet, though I've read all comments. Just wondering, is the path exposed in any section, or otherwise suitable for those afraid of heights? steepness, length, no problem for me. I know it's marked as easy path.

Today was at the top of Krniška Glavica from the direction of Zajzera. First went along the path towards bivouac Majcen, then after an hour of walking turned towards bivouac Stuparič (quite exposed, near the bivouac some frozen ground in places). From there continued to the summit itself. From the top went down to Jezercu and Grego Hut. Instead of direct path to the valley I used the traverse towards Stuparič, then at the path junction in Grawe valley decided for descent. For the whole route, which is currently again snow-free, without straining, with numerous stops, took 9 hours.
Some snow on the scree at the entry to the north face of Montaža and higher up, from afar looks quite icy.

On Friday -12.08.2016 I went with the Thursday group of retirees from PD Škofja Loka to the beautiful peak sheltered by mighty Montasio - to Krniška Glavica-1889m.
The route to our starting point takes us via the Rateče border crossing to Italy. From there you really need to know the roads on the Italian side to bring us to the Dunja valley. Dunja is the most famous valley in the Julian Alps. Its mouth gapes from the Iron valley between Kluže and Tablja (Pontebba). From the hills the Dunja stream flows into it to Bela. No Slovenes here for a long time - only Slovenian names remain. Slovenes called it Dolnja, as it flows down in a deep canyon. Dunja is thus the name of the village, stream and valley. The road winding through the valley is steep and narrow in places. We encounter bridges, short tunnels and arrive at the saddle or pass Rudni vrh (1398m), which is our starting point.
South of the Rudni vrh saddle (at the top of the Dunja valley pass), which connects the Montasio group with the ridge of the Naborje mountains, stands the blunt mountain Krniška glava-1889m high. Krniška Glavica is the natural extension of the wildly serrated Dragon's ridge, which descends from Montasio to the north, drops to Krniška saddle from there further northeast into the slopes of Krniška Glavica.
Ascent to it is easy and enjoyable. From the saddle steeply up through the forest in short serpentines. In about half an hour, when the steepness increases and the forest thins, we step into a shallow cirque overgrown with dwarf pines and mocking rhododendrons. Here we already see our goal at the right end of the rocky ridge. The path becomes rubble-filled and steeper again, climbs to the edge of the ridge, beyond which through the bushes in a few minutes up to the cross on the top.
We descend along a somewhat eroded path under the walls of mighty Montasio and traverse to bivouac Stuparich, which is excellently equipped, as is most bivouacs in the Western Julians. The red-colored bivouac is visible already from the top of our mountain. Then about 600m more awaits us, occasionally quite steep, rubble-filled descent into the wide gravel cirque of the Zajzera valley, where there is a large arranged parking lot and on our day many vehicles and hikers. There is also a nice chapel.

In seven years everything comes in handy, they say . Back then @GITA described the family descent from bivouac Stuparič to Zajezera. (1st page).
Yesterday I decide to check out the "path" up close. The valley head is increasingly filled with scree, I'm a bit surprised they don't do anything, after all it's also construction material and some separation would be in order.
I quickly find the start (pole with half-broken direction sign), then across the torrent and up the slope, where I'm soon "pleasantly" surprised by freshly sawn fallen trees. The path is nicely traceable to 2/3, there obviously ran out of fuel or night caught the diligent workers.  Continuation is not difficult, there are still plenty of marks on trees, and practically no more fallen trees. Just below the bivouac the little path joins the marked trail coming from Špranja direction. The path itself is not particularly difficult, just need to be careful at the beginning traverse, where the path runs under some rocky barrier, and at crossing the torrent, where the rocks are quite polished.
At the bivouac I sit a bit, then continue to the La Grawe cirque and to the top of Krniška Glavica.
Descend to the little lake (Laghetto) and past the closed Grego hut to the valley.

Oh, is Zajezera perhaps the real Slovenian name of the cirque, for which I never know how to pronounce correctly - Val Saisera/Zajzera??

Same route as @dprapr, we did it last week, we only extended it further to the Stuparič bivouac, then returned a few hundred meters back and descended to Zajzera.

Krniška Glavica never really interested me. Maybe because of the modest height, as 1889 m isn't much. Even the proximity of Viš and Montaža didn't attract me. But that I'd step on its summit for the first time in winter, I never imagined. But I warmed up quickly to the suggestion. And the enthusiasm was complete. Especially the use of crampons and ice axe captivated me, which was quite necessary in these conditions towards the top.
The view was really phenomenal, although identifying distant peaks was tricky again. The view towards the Julians is very captivating, from Mangart via Jalovec to Triglav, if you're attentive. Višarje and Kamniti Lovec aren't far, V. Nabojs and Viš then Koštrunove Špice to Montaža, which is really within reach. The view across the Dunja valley takes you to the Dolomites, from the Carnic Alps I always notice Zuc dal Bor, behind the High Tauern, at which I always hold my breath. And right nearby Dve Špici, Monte Piper, Poldašnja Špica.
Time to go back, I was a bit worried about that steep part under the summit, but it went fine.
It seemed Krniška Glavica isn't much visited in winter, as we didn't meet anyone, up to the Grego hut yes, later no more. Well, it's nice there too.
Yes, one more thing, the shelter below the summit was snowed in, only one edge was visible.

Wow, ločanka, how nice and what all you can do! I admire your ascents, views, distances, pastures.... you always know how to summarize your achievements so nicely and thus bring closer to us the unattainable mountains. Just keep it safe and onwards!

Nice, from the description I assume you returned the same way? Anyway, the descent via Krnica with switchbacks to Stuparič and then down to Zajzera is nicer and at least for me also easier.

zlatica, I do it with pleasure, because up there it's really nice for me and because the camera allows me to bring closer something that's otherwise hidden from the eyes

For today's goal we chose Krniška Glavica, past which we already hiked last summer to Poldašnja Špica and admired that other huge mass of the wonderful mountain - Montaža. The weather forecast proved correct and in the western Julians we really had a wonderful sunny day. The road to the chapel is plowed and dry, no special features. The amount of snow increases rapidly with altitude, to Grego there was a nicely trodden track. After a good hour of walking we already enjoy the views of the mighty walls and wonder how the snow base is on the steep part through the forest and on the last summit slope. Snow is a bit mixed. From crust to powder, to hard to dry that isn't bonded to the base. When we pass (or over) the pond and head into the steepness through the forest, it starts blowing hard. There were some ski tourer tracks, but higher up the wind erased them completely. When we reach a larger rock, the path tracks and markers disappear The amount of snow is already substantial, at times sinking to the knees. But the snow is fresh and practically not bonded to the icy base with large crystals. If we continued from the rock along the summer path, we'd cross a huge crusty slope, the small valley was literally a snow dump. So we decide to try steeply up on the left along the indistinct ridgelet. Occasionally a snowball flies past us, driven downhill by the warm sun and wind. When we reach a suitable spot to catch breath we see our goal is still quite far, but we're almost at the end of the steep wall. Again need to cross a crusty slope, the clock is rushing towards noon, although we didn't know when the 4 hours since start had passed. Obviously we really enjoyed, just like at the end. Since the snow isn't well settled and there are many wind-packed slopes, we decide on a picnic with view and then straight descent back to Grego hut. There in the middle of snow we make an improvised bed and enjoy strong sun rays for a good hour. The silence was broken only by the loud rumbling of avalanches. Next time in slightly better snow for sure to the top. We really understand Igor why he liked to go to this world so much. Simply wonderful here. The mountain will wait, the path was wonderful.

26.6....It's been a long time since I was on this mountain, so I join the hikers from Javornik Koroška Bela. Ascent along the usual path through the forest, nothing special. Descent past the Stuparich bivouac and under the mighty Montaža wall. The path descends and ascends, some fixed protections help, nice path for me. Then across the scree fields of Zajzera back to the parking lot. It was really hot there.
