Two days on Komna. On Monday from Ukanc to Vratca and on to Velika Montura and Velika Baba and along the ridge to Lanževec and over Lepa Komna to Dom na Komni and to the valley. Path from Lanževec directly to Lepa Komna, which is marked on hribi.net map as marked, does not exist, only remnants of mulattiera here and there. Yesterday from Ukanc to Vratca and Veliki Bogatin and over planina Govnjač back to the hut and to the valley. Conditions both days identical, only yesterday on the ridge wind around 40 km/h. On sunny sides no snow at all, except on paths. Where traffic is heavy (say below Dom na Komni), snow is polished and icy, nasty slippery. Path on shady sides of Mahavšček and below Vrh Planje is snowy (10-15cm snow), but nice footprints are trampled, so it's a pleasure to walk. For me actually ideal, walking on snow that slightly creaks is much more joyful for me than walking on scree. On shady planina Govnjač real winter, which starts already some 5 minutes away from Dom na Komni. In these times of snow shortage very nice and worth visiting!

Call Dom na Komni: 040 620 784 You'll get first-hand info on how it is up there, and also if someone has already been up after snowfall, i.e. if it's trodden down, you'll get it. Otherwise I use data from Vogel avalanche station for Komna (snow depth, wind and temperature) ...

lena ala - Probably snow to Bogatin not over knees? Asking because planning that tour this Saturday. Would be glad if more, because breaking trail is nice, especially around there.

I was up on Saturday 21.1. Nicely trodden. Towards top broke through a bit, nothing worse. For down had crampons, goes without too. Good luck

Anyone kind enough to tell conditions on path to Dom na Komni and further to Bogatin? Snow up there plenty sure, but path to Komna? Enough chains or even without?

@Enka Last weekend GRS Bohinj, Bovec members and maybe others up there. On skis, but surely said something about conditions in Dom, so best call Komna for first-hand info: 040 620 784 Good luck!

For the path to Komna, the "little chains" are, in my opinion, more than enough. Everyone has to decide for themselves and if it's bad you can always turn back and the hut, the summit waits for better conditions. I usually don't put them on.

Look, just a couple years ago nobody even thought crampons were needed for the path to Komna. Nice and slow, if it's icy you step a bit more carefully, if worse, step a bit off the path. Chains aren't ever mandatory anywhere. If that's enough, it works just as well without.

I've always gone up only in summer, so I'd rather ask since I have no clue what the path's like in March. Sure I can turn back anytime, but in worse conditions I'd rather go somewhere I can reach the top . Thanks all for opinions and advice!

The path is easy, upper part still snowy. A week ago no winter gear needed.

Path to the hut is easy, upper part still snowy. A week ago no winter gear needed. Further lots of snow and winter gear required (also skis or snowshoes).

Janez, thanks for field info! Possible to reach without snowshoes at least to hut below Bogatin? For the view
