Continuation of the topic about glory...

On Friday, 6.7.2012, my husband and I climbed Jalovec, which rewarded us with beautiful views over the surrounding hills and the valley. On the ascent and also on the return we noticed a beautiful rainbow in the shape of a circle in the valley. The caretakers in the shelter under Špička said that this phenomenon is seen only rarely and is called Gloria. I'm wondering if it really is a rare phenomenon.

Yes, it is really a phenomenon called mountain glory. Probably it's already 30 years since my friend and I were at Vršič; there was an older man from Bled in the hut too. He was a real mountaineer as he said he went to Triglav every year (don't remember exactly but think around 50 times). And he told us that once when he was going to some mountain this phenomenon appeared to him too. But he said that fog formed in the shape of a circle and in it the reflection of his figure. At that time we believed him but I think these are natural phenomena that happen every now and then and probably the outline of the body which under certain angle and certain light phenomena indicated the body shapeconfused

Rare phenomenon, probably we also often overlook it if distant and thus consequently smaller. Prerequisite are fog banks (the closer the better) rising from the valley (usually must be below observer level) and sun in right position behind/above us projecting our body onto the fog. Certainly refraction and light reflection in water droplets plays very important role in the phenomenon but I don't know the exact scientific explanation.

With my grandson we experienced it last year in front of the Peter Skalar hut.

... Interesting, it also appears above the mountain. First time I saw it above Grintavec, when we were climbing to Kočna, most often though below in the valley...

It's a really interesting phenomenon that hasn't been fully explained yet. Most likely it's the result of backscattered light from water droplets in the fog. It occurs only if the fog is below the observer and the light source (Sun) is directly behind the observer.

I've seen it several times myself: http://bojanambrozic.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/28092011-551-kopija.jpg

So a few times when conditions were right, I waited a few minutes and the glory really appeared for me.

Interesting, Majdag says she saw the glory also above the mountain (I've seen it too approximately at eye level), while Bojan A says the fog must be below the observer. I don't want to argue, but I'm curious: Bojan, where does your basis for that claim come from if the phenomenon isn't fully explained yet?

Gloria by ing. Trontelj

This is an optical phenomenon that can be observed at the upper edge of clouds or fog (in mountains, airplane, balloon or elsewhere). Around the observer or their shadow on the upper edge of fog or around an object (airplane, balloon) colorful rings appear. These also form due to diffraction of sunlight passing through water droplets. The impression is as if the observer has a saintly halo around them – glory. And for this phenomenon too, similar to rainbow, the position of the observer relative to the sun is important. The sun must be behind them.

For a real glory, our shadow is needed, so seeing it up there would be harder.

@ merkur: there are several theories about the formation of glory, simply put there are no physical equations that predict it exactly yet. If you're not a physicist by chance, the equations wouldn't help you when observing glory either, because it involves quite complex calculations. That's how science works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glory_(optical_phenomenon)

Glory can also be seen from an airplane. Definitely the fog must be below the observer,

Yes, the white ones are there - well hidden ... nasmeh

@otiv, @Bojan A: Regarding the glory I thought (I'm not a physicist) of early morning, sunrise, rays on my back, my gaze directed towards the west and a bit upwards ... mist in my eyes ... Aha, I'm standing on Triglav, actually rather on Everest. Yeah, I know the latter will be a bit hard early in the morning. mežikanje

@merkur the phenomenon is not dependent on the time.

@miri: Or is it - in some way? The sun is low above the horizon in the morning ... One bit of the debate was whether we could see glory above the standing level - that's what I meant. nasmeh
