From Robanov Kot over Črni Hriber to Krofička

rok.si1. 07. 2018 18:45:45
Today I finally walked this path after a long desire. In the morning misty caps covered the peaks of Raduha and Ojstrica but I trusted the meteorologists that it would be a nice day - it can't rain every day after all smile The path through the beautiful valley always passes quickly and soon at Robanova planina I was looking for the triangular rise where the path starts. Found it, after a short walk through the forest also the gully leading to the top. After the ascent I rejoiced at the characteristic rock and path by it, so I succeeded. The path could be followed relatively well, unbelievably routed on those slopes like stairs to the sky, green patches already cleared by someone (bravo!), but the higher I got the less obvious the path was to me. I returned to the last point I was sure was the right path and not some chamois trail, almost turned back, but said I'd try once more.
Returned to the place where I had been, there a chamois - guard waited on the ridgelet and whistled a few times, then scampered off. I followed it, less and less sure I was on the right path, reached the triple cave, then further up the nasty scree to the saddle, where I gave up, turned and returned the same way. Now looking at others' photos I was on the right path, at the top of the gully (rozka pics 8 and 9) and thus already close to the hut under Utami, shame I let the scree after the gully demoralize me. But still had a proper tour, especially the descent on this path is a category of its own...

Along the whole path I didn't see a single cairn and only here and there some sawn branches of dwarf pine, which someone sawed decades ago.

Well, someday I'll walk it completely and only uphill smile

lp, Rok

Yeah, pity but it was still nice anyway, such tours are some kind of adventure for me and not conditioned by the goal itself. Important that I got somewhere and returned safely.
Really nice path, views of Robanova planina like from a plane, high among the rocks the wind brought the sound of the chapel bell on Molička planina, as consolation prize I removed four ticks at work today, next time to Robanov kot definitely in long pants nasmeh

Yesterday I repeated the attempt and this time I succeeded nasmeh From the point where I stopped last time to the trough there was still quite some pathless terrain, where I walked more by feel again - I didn't see much of predecessors' tracks. When I finally found it I was happy twice - first that it's there and second for the pleasantly cool water dripping from it - it was a very hot day, already at seven in the morning in the valley I was completely sweaty after half an hour of walking. The hut still stands lonely under the wall, when I climbed to the ridge and looked into Logarska the dark clouds over central Grintovci put me in a dilemma - continue along the ridge or descend to the marked path towards Strelovec. I decided it would be OK, just don't take too much risk. When I went along the ridge in the opposite direction a few years ago I kept getting lost in the bushes, this time it went really well, just hoooot and humid in the scorching sun. On Krofička I had a snack and descended to Logarska, it was really pleasant walking in the shade in the breeze. No rain that I feared, and at four I was already, after a long time again, hitchhiking at Dom planincev, a nice couple drove me to Robanov kot after five minutes waiting and 100 meters walked on the road, in short super!
The path even steeper, but less mysterious than last time1

This Črni Hriber is really a tough nut. Orientationally and fitness-wise demanding pathless terrain.
We started around 8am at the parking in Robanov kot. To the mountain hut we warmed up nicely and found the entry which is indistinct, but we succeeded the first time. Follows steep incline that doesn't let up to the top. Sometimes the path is well traceable, but suddenly it disappears and you have to work for continuation. No marks to help with orientation. On the whole tour we met two guys, and that more towards the end.
No special features on the path, just some fallen trees that can be bypassed nicely.
Exceptional experience for me. Also Rozka who repeated the tour after some years was happy when we reached the spring under Utami around 12pm.
Back we went over Strelovec where larches are already getting golden color.
Wonderful tour, wonderful company.

The topic doesn't quite fit under Črni H. but we were really close! We looked at it across the gully, which is passable.
When I was last roaming under Krofička with "palček p.", we noticed a cut hunter's path before Covnik's meadow. When I mention it to Milan, he confirms he walked here. Today, we're going to check it on the terrain.
Parking in the forest before Govec, Travnik, Prodi, Prag, Škrbinski plaz, Okrogla peč, Covnik's meadows, Konj, bivouac under Utami, Vratni žleb, Movznik, Strelovec, Knez farm and descent via hunter's and pathless variants back to Robanov kot. 20km and 12 hours of strenuous and demanding walking.
Climbing to III. grade, many difficult details along the way. Most of hunter's trail and some pathless. Orientationally extremely demanding and also technically. Morning fog and then late afternoon sun.
Met many chamois, squirrel, marten with mouse in mouth, black snake, no human being.
Extremely demanding hunter's paths, probably rarely used nowadays. Some sections we did "our way". Then we found the path and continued. Paths are mostly still quite visible, cut long ago. Sometimes a path section gets lost and requires considerable effort to connect. Very demanding!!

Vratni žleb

The gully that's nicely visible when standing at Robanova planšarija. When you enter Špelak gully, the branch to Vratni žleb branches left. It ascends steeply. At the beginning quite scree-filled gully. The first jump looks quite demanding already and it's smart to bypass it right into the wall II. Above the jump it's good to return to the gully and continue up it to the top. Follow rocky jumps climbable to II. From the cave with huge entrance follows another jump which we rated to III. Can bypass it left into scrub. Looks quite easy from afar, but once in it, you change your mind a bit. All the way to the junction of the path from bivouac under Ut the ascent is physically demanding and tricky. Just for Vratni žleb (from Robanova pl.) we spent approx. 5 hours without special breaks. From Strelovec ridge we descended along Sphavnik gully and then looked for hunter's trails. New logging track mixed things up a bit, but we still descended nicely to Travnik. Combination - hunter's, logging, forest road, hunter's, descent "our way".

Very demanding pathless. Orientationally, technically - very demanding!!! For experienced pathless hunters.

Yesterday morning was planned for two to find the path over Črni hriber to the meadows and then directly to Krofička summit. Unfortunately the other participant didn't feel very olympic, so I went alone. Next time.
I went over Črni hriber three years ago, but still missed the entry overgrown gully at the beginning and started ascending the adjacent one, quite similar from below, but it quickly narrowed and turned into a jump leading to a steep grassy shoulder. I descended back and found the right one, leading to the already known rock where the path starts. It's still as I remember - mysterious, steep, scenic and requires 100% attention all the time. When I reached the upper part of the path where on the grassy gully a "path" branches right into the forest towards the hut under Utami, I couldn't find the continuation upwards or to the left at all. At least I think the path should continue somewhere there. I checked the scree rocks on the left, the gully directly above, but nowhere did I see traces of predecessors. So I said ah, and went to Roban's shepherd hut.
Ascent up crumbly gully, then traverse under walls, through scrub, here the path is practically invisible to me, only here and there a sawn branch of scrub confirms the right direction. Here I circled for some time and struggled with scrub, but finally reached the little spring that was still dripping - I fixed the tin end with a twig so drops end in the trough not before it. The hut still stands alone under the walls, this is really a special piece of world. Between rock towers I reached Movznik, there met a couple I saw leaving the hut with shelter when I arrived. I walked to Strelovec and enjoyed the view, peace and knowing that now it's just a walk to the car and it was, unfortunately lower part on dusty road but what can you do. But unusual sight of a herd of alpacas at one of the first farms.

I've satisfied my hunger for Črni hriber for quite some time now, but the continuation to Krofička summit still bugs me. Can someone give a hint, picture, how to continue to Covnik meadows and where I missed the right path?

Where did you look for the trail to the meadows? Left on the ridge of the hill, where the trail turns right towards chamois dens?

Yes approximately there (picture 4 of my post from 1.7.2018), but obviously a bit too low. Didn't go directly past chamois dens either, went a bit lower towards crumbly gully. Many options there, this Saturday I wasn't lucky to find, maybe another time.
