As jedriličar already said, if you plan to use the gear as a hiker then don't let climbing tools mislead you. If you know you don't need crampons for climbing and don't mind how long it takes to put them on, since semi-automatic and automatic ones go on faster than classic ones, you can use classic ones too, even if you decide in the future to buy winter boots with welts for crampons. For snow, but really for snow, aluminum ones will do, but if you plan to use them seriously, sooner or later some tooth will break; they are much lighter though. For me for easier scrambles, traverses, etc., I like ultra light ice axe, just know that some (Petzl, Camp) have a hollow handle that fills with snow right away. Personally it doesn't bother me, but it's annoying if you put the ice axe in the backpack. But such ice axes are great because they weigh 'nothing' and it's not hard to take it along even if you're almost 100% sure you won't need it. Good buy
