Vrtinjlogarski graben / Val Bartolo - Gorjanski vrh / Göriacher Berg / Monte Goriane (over Vrtinjlogarsko sedlo / Bartolosattel / Sella Bartolo)

Access to the starting point:
Via Border crossing Rateče, or via Border crossing Predel, drive to Trbiz / Tarvisio, then continue in the direction of the ski resort Svete Višarje / Monte Lussari. When Trbiz ends, from the roundabout behind the Eurospar store, take the exit towards Frogs / Camporosso and Valcanale, then immediately right towards the village. After the underpass under the railway go left, then follow the signs for Vrtinjlogarski graben / Val Bartolo. After the settlement, the asphalt ends and the road leads to the valley mentioned above, which is ascended on a usually fairly well-maintained dirt road, which is followed past the town, where you will see the mountain signs for the 509 trail, which leads to the Angle Saddle / Sella Canton (the road is asphalted in the back). Just 10 metres further on, you will come to a no-driving sign, where you will park in the parking lot.

Path description:
From the parking lot, continue along the asphalt road that continues along the Vrtinje Stream, which runs through the valley of the Vrtinjlogarski graben. Higher up, the road leads past the La Baita di Beatrice hut, and after the hut or inn, the road bends and leads to Vrtinji log. Continue along the winding dirt road that leads through the middle of the vast valley, where the path takes you past several huts, the names of which are marked on the information board at the start of the route. After a while, the valley narrows and the road starts to climb again, leading us past the last huts. After the last hut, you will quickly reach the marked crossroads at Vrtinjlogarski sedlo, where you will also reach the national border between Itali and Austria.
From the crossroads, continue in the route Gorjanska planina (on the signpost Göriacher Alm), first following the wide cart track, then, when the cart track turns slightly to the right, continue straight on to the logging trail (the branch is not marked). Continue along the edge of a partly marshy clearing for a short distance, then the path turns into a dense forest, through which you continue until you reach a forest road. Follow the road to the left for a few steps, then continue right on the marked path, which reaches a macadam road a few steps higher up. The markings then lead us through a short grassy section into the forest, through which we continue to climb on the Austrian side of the border (we entered the Austrian side at the Vrtinjlogarski sedlo). Higher up, the forest thins out several times, so that we occasionally get some views, and along the way we see some well-preserved border stones from the 1920s. Further on, the path, which gradually passes to the unmarked northern ridge Veliki Kopinj, becomes steeper, and before the summit, it turns slightly left, so that it bypasses the summit itself. When we get back to the border, or when we reach the eastern ridge of the peak, a short unmarked path branches off to the right, leading to Veliki Kopinj, and we descend along the ridge to a minor forest road, where we join the marked trail that leads over the Kot saddle.
Continue towards Gorjanska planina (right saddle Kot), and the way ahead leads along the wide cart track, which runs along the Italian side of the border and continues with some short ascents and descents. Later on, we pass Gorjanski vrh on the south side, and when the forest ends we reach Gorjanska planina, where, with good views, we reach the central part of mountain pasture, located on the Austrian side of the border, where several huts are also situated. From the huts at mountain pasture, continue left and start climbing along the ridge that runs along the border between Austria and Itali. With fine views of Dobratsch and Julian Alps, you will reach the summit in a few minutes.
