This year is a weird one. First the state forbids me good hikes, in the middle of the year the doctor. Well, finally he softens a bit and allows shorter hikes. I hurried to take advantage of it before he changes his mind .
Yesterday was a really nice trip chosen. One you can repeat anytime, but the color attraction was exceptional yesterday. From green, yellow to white and mixture of all. Yeah, this snow really spiced up the views, and we can be grateful to it.
So, we started at Tonkina koča and headed along the old military path towards Vršič. We stepped right to the top of it, descended past Poštarski dom, which yesterday was still defending itself from the white snow whiteness with umbrellas and climbed to Sovna glava, where the views opened excellently in all directions. Prisojnik in the foreground, Mojstrovke, Pelci, Krn, Bavški Grintavec are just giants in their ridges.
Then across the pass along the interesting hunting path past the hunting lodge to the starting point.
We sipped coffee near the confluence of the Pišnicas, each joining with its own story at Lake Jasna.

Today (Monday, October 12) from Vršič to Slemenova špica and back, then on skis along the old road from Tonka's hut to Poštarski dom and back.
Weather was forecasted so-so, but when I parked early afternoon on empty Vršič I saw I missed most of the nice weather. No problem. The track of about two or three predecessors was made towards Vratič, I hoped it continued. And it did. If the fresh snow on the south side of Vratič already made an exceptional backdrop, around Slemenova špica the snow-covered golden yellow larches were unearthly beautiful. On the trampled path no problems, except that I gawked here and there trying to catch some especially nice view in the camera which stole my time. When I arrived at the Špica, most peaks were already wrapped in dark clouds, so my attention was stolen for a moment by the view of Kotovo sedlo. Snow-covered with illuminated background it looked exceptionally symmetrical. I haven't noticed that before. The little lake for the cult mirror photo of Jalovec of course wasn't there, and even if it was, there was no Jalovec .
Returned to the car, from the top to the parking lot a good hour. At Tonka's hut lower down I spotted a small plowed parking spot. Although it was already past five pm, pity to waste the day. Stopped, put on touring boots and skis and climbed further along the Old Vršič road to Poštarski dom, where darkness caught me. Skied back the same way. The skiing itself wasn't anything special, but in the beam of the headlamp the sparkling snow crystals falling from the trees were magical. And my first touring descent of the future winter. October 12, 2020 probably needs to be remembered.
Snow at Tonka about 20 cm. At Vršič about 5 cm more, at Slemen between 30 and 40 cm. In sunny spots mostly wet, in shady almost dry. Met only one girl (returning from Slemenova špica). It seems to me that on the new road for at least two hours I didn't see or hear any car. It's plowed to bare, if I remember right, radio announced in the morning it's closed. The indecently crowded mountain pass in summer season this afternoon at least for a while became a realm where only wonderful nature and silence had the main word.

Very nice. Looking at the pictures I felt like jumping in the car and going to Vršič right now. Well, at the first opportunity I'll go see this crazy combination of autumn and winter...mid-October always brings the most beautiful colors, hope for a few more sunny days...

The road was still normally passable yesterday. How it is today or will be in coming days depends on how much snow will fall

How is parking at Vršič and until when do you need to be at the pass to get a safe (paid) parking spot?

On Thursday there was quite a crowd at Vršič. No traffic wardens, parking not paid. Everyone parked where they found a suitable spot. We arrived just before eleven and parked a bit lower. Organized and paid parking is currently only at Erjavčeva hut, which was also full. Most hikers headed to Slemenova špica, where the larches are already bare. Construction workers finished work for this year.
