I wasn't worried either until I ran into an infected one and "got" tick meningoencephalitis . True though, I wasn't vaccinated.

We all in the family got vaccinated against meningitis. Son got Lyme on the meadow, I got it working on the roof And don't forget the booster dose, because no one will remind you.

They told me at infectious diseases that I'm lifelong protected against meningoencephalitis.

This is what the Lyme test result looks like! Unfortunately mine is positive. lp

Geppo, what signs did you have to suspect Lyme and go get tested?

I was at a routine check-up (dizziness, ringing and buzzing in one ear) and the doctor asked if I had had any tick bite recently. When I said about 50 she was shocked and sent me right away for a blood draw for tests. Since the results were positive, she sent me to an infectologist. He asked if I had these and those issues? (forgot the specifics - two years ago). I had none of that and he said my borderline test values were not catastrophic and if I had no problems they wouldn't pump me with antibiotics. That's how it ended, luckily I have no special issues indicating a Lyme connection and I hope it stays that way. I get vaccinated regularly every three years (after 60 every 3 years against TBE). lp

With Lyme, when that first characteristic symptom appears (rings or "target"), they give azithromycin double dose (day 1: 2 tabs, then 4 days 1 tab). After about 2 months they do an antibody test; if negative, great. If positive, then they look at how severe the symptoms are; there are various protocols with a combination of several antibiotics, usually including doxorubicin, which can have quite nasty side effects. With meningitis it's interesting that about 70% of people experience the infection asymptomatically (data from professional articles), so it's actually much more widespread. Still, don't rely on not being among the "unlucky 30%", as it can be quite bad, even with permanent consequences.

Doxorubicin? That red stuff against cancer? Fucked up thing. Sure it's not doxycycline?

Ugh... of course doxycycline... the phone decided to "correct" the word itself

Since you're writing about Lyme, which I treat daily at infectology, just a small correction. For erythema, redness after a tick bite, we give other antibiotics too, not only azithromycin, most often doxycycline. After 2 months, if everything is ok, and most are without any issues, no blood tests are needed, as they can remain positive for a very long time after infection and that's normal. It's really smart to get vaccinated against tick-borne meningitis. Regards

@keti, thanks for the info. It seems that GPs mostly stick to azithromycin (at least around our pharmacy). I myself 5 years ago with that typical erythema got azithromycin right away. Regarding testing after 2 months, I also conclude from my own case, or I was told then "that's the practice". They seem to fear doxycycline, since from primary level we almost get no prescriptions for it, even for other diseases, not just Lyme. Of course, on infectology you have much more experience and knowledge about this than GPs

Yes, we also notice that testing after 2 months is standard practice at primary level, although it is completely senseless and unnecessary. And we don't know where it comes from, since there are no such recommendations anywhere.

Strelovec was heavily visited, so I continued along the ridge to Lucjan and Rožni vrh. Lucjan is bushy, but Rožni vrh is an excellent viewpoint. The path to Lucjan is nicely traceable, further to the saddle between Lucjan and Rožni vrh quite difficult. Ascent from the saddle to Rožni vrh is quite bushy. I descended back to the southern slopes of Lucjan and left, steeply pathless to the hiking trail.

Isn't that Rožni vrh on the photo? On page 5 is my post and also photos from the path when I crossed Rožni vrh. This one isn't bushy at all, it's forested. Lp

Some photos from today's Strelovec. The marked path was normally passable, the atmosphere wonderful. Take care!

Well today on Strelovec everything is already different than it was on Friday. Larches haven't turned yellow yet, like in previous years at this time. I'm attaching a photo from 2008, when on Oct 5 there was already quite some snow from Knez onwards.

A friend from childhood calls me to go to the mountains, my better half gives me the go-ahead for the mountains, so we went to Strelovec today. From Roban first along the path under Kogl, then along the road across Ogradijeve meadows to Knez. Further to the pasture, from there straight through the forest to the meadows under Movznik. Still enveloped in thick fog we steeply climb towards the ridge, when the fog clears nicely, and the view is beautiful. Nothing left but to sit and enjoy the sun. There Ivo joins us, heading to the hut under Utami, so leisurely and carefully there and back. The ground was slippery. On Movznik on the way back we say goodbye and go on each our way. In a leisurely pace over Strelovec, then towards Logarska peč, where we have another drink. Oh, we were three, as Erik brought along the curious little dog Miša, who was incredible! When we leave the peč I notice new markings through Hudi graben, so it pulls us down. In the upper part you still need to follow the path a bit, then markings are visible, but not many, which suits me fine. The path is also cleared of fallen trees. When we hit asphalt in the valley, we stick to the road through Solčava back to Roban, no cheating! Take care!
