That's how it is on the forum - when you ask something nicely, you immediately get at least one answer. And recently a weirdo from our parts made fun of me and insisted that the forum is useless. Yesterday we descended from Špik together with a mountaineer from Carinthia - he said the road to Trat is OK, regarding the climbing path Austrians rate the initial part (in the picture) C, further on easier.

Maybe I have seen him after all sometime, that little man. And also from Valvasorjev dom, or from Potoška planina, across here to the entry into the climbing path, sounds somehow closest at first glance. Little advice: on the long scree you can ruin your footwear to such an extent that it can "breathe" on the climbing path. I myself, before trying it, asked Austrians about the difficulty of the climbing path. All insisted that it is: "nicht zu schwer", or even "leicht".. If they weren't just bragging, this rating was perhaps the result of some comparison with their mountain adrenaline parks.. True, the initial part is not exactly easy. The devil's head they installed in the wall above the cable indicates whose this part is. Not for mommies with baby strollers, as Juš once said, nor for livestock wagon, as Brišar says.. Stol a bit differently.

I'm wondering if there's any bus or taxi from the train station to Valvasor hut?

I'm asking seriously. We're coming by train from the coastal side. Otherwise, how long would the path from Žirovnica train station to Stol take us?

Elevation difference is almost 1700m, depends on person's fitness, somewhere in 6 hours with breaks of course.

Yeah, from Žirovnica to Stol is quite a full-day tour.

Every time the Karawanks from the Austrian side seem to me completely different mountains than ours. No similarity at all. Our Karawanks are soft and grassy, the foreign ones steep and rugged... And beautiful too. Stol is typical. When puffing along the switchbacks from Valvasor you can't imagine someone on the other side grabbing rocks and climbing up. The via ferrata to Stol is interesting, start a bit more demanding (first few minutes), then sections with and without cables alternate, and at the end half an hour of scree that looks killer but isn't. Fog accompanied us to the summit and a bit beyond, result of morning rain, then it cleared and it was really nice. Praise to the friendly caretakers of Prešeren Hut, they make it so homely. No need to return the same way, better to turn at the saddle towards Klagenfurt Hut, reached via path under Klagenfurt Peak and Svacica in about two hours. A round at Klagenfurt Hut costs just as much as ours. Road to parking (last 3 km) a bit rougher but not problematic, rest without features.

Lidija, yesterday there was no fog at all. When did you do that via ferrata? Yesterday very early start from Ljubelj and then at saddle Šija continue on the upper path towards the valley in Kožne. The only annoying part is the descent through the gully before the crowded valley start. I walk past two big boulders. At the junction I turn towards Klagenfurt Hut. Soon I'm at saddle Beljščica (1840m). At Klagenfurt Hut I treat myself to košutnik, but it's not like ours - transparent - taste is right. The label has the wrong picture. Here I ask how to get to the via ferrata start. So down Mačenska planina partly on nice gravel road, partly shortcuts, to reach the start before the big scree. This wonderful protected path was renovated in 2000 and the start lowered a bit, so even more difficult. On Austrian scale rated B, hardest part B-C (of possible F/G). This difficult jagged wall with extensive screes cuts into Medvedji dol valley. Quickly across scree to step into via ferrata. Can also start at old protected path entry. Two hours of protected climbing await. I think I haven't climbed such a long via ferrata on our side. Excellently protected. Only three slightly loose pitons on the whole path, otherwise in excellent condition. Too bad the camera failed in Kožne, so no pics from junction to Klagenfurt Hut and to Stol summit. Bought two postcards at Klagenfurt Hut, but like in Italy no stamps. Stol summit greets me in the sun. Then to Mali Stol to Prešeren Hut (2174m) for well-deserved Gams. Back past saddle between Stols to descent into Mel cirque, where Orličje walls greet from left, sort of southeast offspring of Stol - Orlic ridge (Beljščica). I know Orlic peaks have interesting names and can be traversed - Krkotnik, Klagenfurt Peak and Jelenčka. In the valley in Kožne turn to lower path and at saddle Šija to hut At Završnica Spring. It was a wonderful day.

It was Sunday. Usually I post right away, but on Sunday something got tangled at the end , so I didn't. You also treated yourself to some interesting looping. Since you're handy, even wrong forum, so I don't write twice: in Mele it was full of little flowers like in the pic. You surely know which one.

That's rock cress. There are several types-this probably Jacquini's. Here the keel of butterfly flowers is noticeably pointed, leaves petiolate, ovate-lanceolate, silky hairy. For exact ID need to see leaves well esp. Yes really, haven't climbed such ferrata here. Every ferrata is its own story. I liked it a lot-very long. At road below it said three hours to Stol.

Congratulations @velkavrh for this tour. It's definitely not a piece of cake. I'm planning something similar myself, and I'm interested how much time you spent on the whole thing, including the "chamois" of course. best regards and good luck

Jany, I can tell you exactly, because I record times at junctions in a special notebook I carry with me. From Ljubelj to the junction for Celovška about three hours - to the hut a good three-quarters of an hour. For the ferrata itself from the start to the top of Stol the sign says - three hours. I can only give you my word - I spent only two and a half hours on the path. But you need to know I didn't use the camera much and there were no stops for the camera, which is usual for flowers and panoramic shots. Back to Ljubelj takes three and a half hours of moderate walking. So up and down together about ten hours - no more. Definitely repeat next year. Not anymore this year. But in September to Celovška and then around nearby mountains - Svačica, Ovčji vrh, Kosmatica. Interesting would be crossing the entire Orlic ridge. L.P.

First I'll tackle @veklavrh's route, because that Juš's one that starts in the NE pillar of Vrtača requires more technical knowledge than I have in that section. At least that's how I assessed it as a layman when I last climbed Vrtača via pathless terrain over Mala glava. Thanks to both best regards

On Saturday, 3.8.2013, we headed from Austria to the top of Stol. We did a circular tour: Trate/Johannsenruhe (parking) - Stol (climbing path) - Prešeren hut on Stol - Celovška hut - parking. We started early, so we were already at the top before 10 am. The day was sunny and cloudless, so the views were magnificent. There were quite a few hikers at the top The climbing path is extremely beautiful and well protected. I recommend the via ferrata set mainly for safety, as the rocks are quite worn in some places Pictures from the hike can be seen on the website of the Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20130803-stol-plezalna-pot-iz-avstrije/jutranji-pogled-na-severno-steno-stola/20971575

Hello, since the Karavanke are poorly known to me, I'll explore them tomorrow. I plan to park at Ljubelj and first [go] to Stol, then I'm interested if it's possible to go to Begunjščica and back past Roblek? I plan to hike about 7-8h, is that feasible?
