Since I haven't followed conditions last few days, nor do I know much about Špik in any snow conditions, one question... I assume yesterday high mountains general level 2 danger like today. Is Kačji graben safe with such thaw as last days, esp. afternoons? Or assess on spot from exp., snow amount and base if what was going to slide has slid long ago?

It interests me as I'd like to try spring one there sometime.

Thanks in advance for the answer.
Safe steps ahead!]]>

Špik, 24.6.2024

Up through the gully, return via Lipnica.

On the ascent the path crosses snow patches four times, already quite softened by late morning, but without winter gear the last three crossings are not advisable - the first is short and almost flat. All snow patches can be bypassed more (third, right via compact non-exposed rocks) or less (fourth, via scree left of snow patch to path junction) comfortably.

Summit in fog and rain, return on completely dry path via Lipnica. The lower section from the start of the greenery is personally the nicest part of the loop, with really nice views and atmosphere.
In this part I looked around so much that I almost stepped on a small viper amid dwarf pines, which retreated under a rock a second before due to pole touch - careful!

Špik almost annual choice, but this time it annoyed us a bit. Not so much due to strong wind gusts in summit area, but due to muggy air in two thirds of the path. We went really snail-like, otherwise it flowed from us.

Not much traffic usually, but on descent surprised by group of young Spaniards from Barcelona. Equipped poorly, fitting their roots. Saw they were cold from afar, still far to windy ridge. Firmly set on Špik, warmly discouraged given conditions. If we didn't convince them, wind certainly did nasmeh.

Summit area from Lipnica to Špik still has some snow tongues, bypassable above. Descent to Kačji graben harder due to steep snowfield or scree beside it. No other peculiarities. More in photostory...
We park before the bridge over Pišnica and head towards Krnica1
The good side of the path along the river is the morning coolness and slower warming up :)2
That this is Triglav National Park is obvious, so no camper vans should be lit up either :)3
Pišnica is quite watery, which is not surprising in this *summer*4

Špik from Kranjska Gora

Since I live relatively far and no car yet, high mountain visits quite difficult. So decide for all-night tour to Špik. Start at 11pm via Vršič road to Russian Cross then left to Koča v Krnici. In gully some trouble following in dark but no major issues. Path without peculiarities, just missed trail a bit below Lipnica. Summit quite cloudy, not much view east. Stayed half hour more on top then rushed down Kačji graben to catch bus. Total 23km and good 1800m gain.

Špik was not even in the plan; at best, Lipnica or Vrh Na glavah 2195 m, somewhat lower. The wish was actually to climb to the meadows from which you look to the other side into the Velika Dnina cirque and the peaks above it. I didn't expect so much varied flowers on the path at all. On the ascent over the scree, I looked for the boulder with the PP mark, but I didn't see it. Maybe it's overgrown by bushesnasmehnasmeh.

Here's another interesting fact. For transport, I used public transport, caught the bus to Vršič on time, got off at the first stop at the Russian Cross, although the stop is a bit further at Mihov dom.
It incredibly shortens the access to the hut in Krnicanasmeh.

But yesterday, the heat took over on the path, which insolently pressed on the return. Good thing the hut didn't run out of beernasmeh. It tasted incredible.

Some impressions from yesterday on the long, demanding, and hot circular route to Špik. Up past the hut in Krnica, descent through Kačji graben.

Nice mountaineer's greeting.

The circular path is only one so no need to search for the nicest nasmeh But most often people do the loop up past the hut in Krnica and down through Kačji graben. I personally prefer up and down past the hut in Krnica because Kačji graben doesn't appeal to me much (though it starts quite nicely ...until you drop below the forest line). Of course everyone has their own view. If it's your first time then definitely you can't go wrong with the originally suggested direction. Second time you'll know yourself how and what.

Hi

Yesterday on Špik, parked under the 3rd bend and descended to the path through Kačji graben. The path is without special features; in the upper part some scree obscures the path, but it concerns some sections of the path in the last 500 height meters.

Descended past the hut in Krnica, where there is super (self)service and food.

Why is this variant of the circular path (IMHO) better? In the first part of the path, it ascends really steeply. Not exposed, but you gain height so quickly, descending such paths is not quick and you need to be quite careful. I agree the upper 500m is easier for descent, still you can't rush down the scree if someone is below you. Sometimes you need to watch very carefully, so it's some kind of lottery.

Descent to Krnica seems easier to me for these reasons, plus you get to the hut fastest after the tour for water, schnapps, beer, food or whatever else.

With this, the last problem of Krnica is solved.

Good luck!
