Rjavina and Vrbanove špice

Print

Today, although not too early, I head from Kot up the climbing route to Rjavina. After a short stop at the summit I decide to visit also Vrbanove špice, so I go via ridge to Staničeva koča and on to V.V.Š. From here onwards to Pekel the path is extremely interesting, well protected, also very "airy", especially scenic...smile
Still the descent to Kot remains, which seems endless.... still it was a beautiful daysmile

I'd like to go to Rjavina from Pekel, stay at Stanič Hut and return via Vrbanove špice, can someone tell me about snow conditions and wall entries. Thanks Marta

winter gear not needed, no snow left. I did this tour opposite direction on Sunday: http://graheljsblog.blogspot.com/2014/08/po-vrhovih-okrog-staniceve-koce.html

I'm curious how many hours of walking it is to Visoka V.Š via Lojze Rekar path from Kot valley

Less than 6 hours of moderate walking in a group.

Yes, take a map or check hribi.net for tour lengths. Take a calculator for an approx. result. Actual time is what you'll spend. Who knows your fitness, pace,...
If 6 hours to Visoka Vrbanova Špica, don't return via Rjavina.rolling eyes

We took 13 hours for the whole tour with all breaks. Pure walking about 10.5 hours. Up via Vrbanove špice, down from Rjavina via climbing path. Times from descriptions realistic. Rjavina much harder than Lojze Rekar path to Vrbanove špice.
Met many hikers in opposite direction, most took it as two-day tour. Fantastic and unforgettable tour in any case.

Right, how it catches the eye that on such paths hikers don't use helmets.

and even without self-belaying.... good luck...

I don't know why there are so many condemning comments regarding the self-belaying kit (not just in this thread). The path to Vrbanove Špice isn't so extremely demanding that the self-belaying kit is mandatory (it's not like Via della Vita, where things are different of course). Generally it's recommended, even necessary for some, but everyone judges for themselves based on their knowledge and experience how they feel on the path and what climbing suits them better. Over 20 years ago we didn't know self-belaying kits, yet we still walked all secured climbing paths (after all they were made long before such gear was known and made for "ordinary people"). The only difference is that crowds on those paths were smaller back then. Nowadays almost everyone feels safe and capable enough with a self-belaying kit to head out on such paths. Back then it wasn't like that and only the most experienced mountaineers/hikers went on such secured climbing paths.

I emphasize again, I'm not saying the self-belaying kit isn't good and useful (and recommended of course), but no need to cynically condemn those hikers who go on such paths (like Vrbanove Špice, Prisojnik etc.) without it. Probably mostly experienced ones. Fact is there are far more dangerous sections in the mountains on scree precipices without pegs and cables where slip risk is much higher and self-belaying kit doesn't help at all. You gotta head to mountains prudently and cautiously with awareness that even self-belaying kit doesn't guarantee full safety, but everyone can do most for it with full respect for the mountain and heaps of concentration every moment.

planika82 - I agree. Exactly like that.
Although I use it on certain sections (that's why I have it), when the psyche "gives way" I clip in...

Calculate acceleration and deceleration from 5m height, check what load your self-belaying kit is rated for, then think about it...

planika82, that's exactly what I would have written if you hadn't already. A bit below that ridge when descending from Rjavina it's pure scree where it's much more dangerous and nowhere to clip in. Also on those pegs where you have to lower vertically a few meters, nowhere to clip. In my opinion if you're not experienced enough for such a path even with SVK you got no business on Rjavina. And no, I don't have anything against those who use it.

Regarding helmet I fully agree it's needed and I always use it. If someone hiking with me doesn't, it's their choice, I can't force it on their head.

I certainly didn't mean to start any polemic, just answered the guy interested in tour length. Then I attached a link. Sorry, I removed it so no more scandal. Obviously some are just waiting for a chance to criticize. I wasn't too active on this forum before, now even less.

They want to "mold" us anyway. If not nicely, then harshly. Even here on the forum someone always gets "annoyed" by not wearing "mandatory" gear.
Sometimes I wonder where all this is going. Some of us were lucky to live in different times. When parents' hair didn't stand on end yet when a kid (without protection!?) climbed a tree. When we went to the hills ourselves despite being minors..., by public transport.
In computer age it's different. Partly parents are to blame wrapping kids in cellophane. Even more "business". Just think what profit from this gear. And eventually they'll punish those who don't want to buy and use this gear.
I remember not long ago seeing two mountaineers spinning in Za Akom with self-belaying kit!? That's how far it's gone.
Let those who don't feel safe without it use it - and leave others alone.
On via ferratas it's mandatory anyway. On those paths marked as ferrata!!

And it would be instructive to check the latest Planinski vestnik where most common causes and circumstances of accidents are described.
