Ridge traverse Košutnikov Turn - Tolsta Košuta

Afternoon hike takes me through forest and steep grass to Košutnikov Turn, nice weather on top, after descent from Košutnikov Turn I relax on the ridge towards Tolsta Košuta (very demanding pathless terrain), the ridge is quite demanding at first but gets easier over time, from Tolsta Košuta then descent to pasture and on to valley.

On Monday I crossed the ridge in the opposite direction to Matej. In the morning there was already sleet on Dolga Njiva, so the descent from Košutnikov Turn was the most unpleasant part of the path.

Today I amused myself with the traverse from Košuta to Turn, and I must say I haven't done such a nasty path yet. At the beginning it looks like an unmarked path that disappears somewhere in the middle, well at least for me. Then I got stuck twice when I wanted to go over the last peaks before Turn. It turned out you have to go down, then it's almost climbing on very steep grassy and rocky slopes and finding passages over gullies to the eastern path. Extreme caution needed. Recommend going in pair.

Under the tower, the beginning of the ridge towards Tolsta košuta can be seen.... it will still be long, climbing up to grade II is not easy for a casual pop tour.

I didn't go over that peak, couldn't find passage from Tolsta Košuta direction. Twice I turned back at some peaks (I'm no climber) and avoided it far below so I reached eastern path to Turn at top of serpentines, from where you traverse slope above big depression above Dolge Njive.

From picture 5 onwards it's even harder, max II, past the peg. Definitely not a casual hike, belaying recommended.

Ridge traverse from Tolsta Košuta to Košutnikov Turn
Morning is quite cold and white snow patches worry us as we look towards the ridge. We hope rocks and grass on ridge are dry. At Planina Dolge Zgornje Njive sun warms us and we're more optimistic. Among bushes we start climbing towards Tolsta Košuta. Higher we go, the stronger the NE wind. We swap short sleeves back to long ones.
Ridge at start quite easy, no special attention needed. Soon rocky towers start that require some climbing experience. Clumsily, my hiking pole falls over ridge to Austrian side and vanishes in northern precipitous wall. Sometimes rock crumbly broken, elsewhere compact, grasses steep dry slippery. Ridge narrower and "path" hard to follow. Sometimes rusty peg in wall and near end even belay stance. We check descent from this rock tower and it looks like rock is well structured with good holds and steps. Only strong wind bothers me on descent. Getting closer to Košutnikov Turn. Short scenic ridge and we're at cross. Proudly we look at traversed ridge. Due to wind don't linger long on top but descend to visible marked path below in grass. Leads back to Pastirska Koča on Spodnja Dolga Njiva.
Whole loop took cca. 7-8 hours. Didn't rush. Took our time. Ridge not easy, most of path needs caution. Path trace sometimes very questionable and easy to get off track. Snow no obstacle. Road in poor condition.

They say the mountain always waits. If it didn't work out for me back then when Geppo and Milan were wandering there, the latter took time today to take me up too. Because of the grassy traverses and verticals, the tour seemed quite demanding to me. But when you put nice weather and views over half of Slovenia on the other side of the scale, the final result is super nasmeh

From Lijaneje we crossed the ridge from Košutnikov Turn to Tolsta Košuta today. Over Dolga Njiva we first climbed the eastern path to the top of Košutnikov Turn. From there descent to the col and then left towards Gamsovke. The ridge is exposed and crumbly in places. The hardest is access to the highest Gamsovka where you need to climb a 10m step. Mostly we progressed right on the top of the ridge. From the last Gamsovka before Oblici there is another awkward descent, the continuation is much easier though caution is still needed. Over all Oblici we continued to both peaks of Tolsta Košuta and then back to the start.

On Thursday I did the Turn-Tolsta Košuta tour via Gamsovke. If you stubbornly stick to the ridge like I did, you need a cool head and a sure step. Not for the dizzy velik nasmeh

Košutnikov turn / Tolsta košuta
Milan usually goes from Tolsta košuta towards K. turn, this year I suggested contra. Stankotu didn't mind anyway, since he hadn't traversed that part of the ridge yet.
At 7:20 we start the path to Košutnik. Sun/slope/warming and those +4C we soon forget. Crows harass us with their cawing. Up steep grass at 9:10 at the cross. Snack rest and first looks towards the jagged ridge waiting for us. Descent along the ridge and we master the first steep confidently. Verticals don't bother us and we calmly progress along the ridge. I'm a bit afraid of that descent which was ascent last year. Soon we face it. Slowly, carefully and it goes without issues. Now I can relax a bit, since nothing special awaits us anymore.
In the sun we advance towards Tolsta košuta and glance at the precipitous S walls of the Austrian side. At Tolsta we lie down in the warm autumn grass (first check for snakes), rest/snack (12:20). Now only the classic to the hut awaits us. We drink well-deserved beer and down to the valley.
Nice, sunny, warm day. Met no one. I think it doesn't matter if you go from Tolsta towards Košutnik or contra!
