Bohinj is abolishing free bus services
The Municipality of Bohinj has been striving for years to reduce the number of vehicles in the Bohinj Lake area. In 2018, they introduced free bus services from remote parking lots, but at the last municipal council session, they decided that the services will no longer be free.
They made this decision because the financial needs for special line services are increasing year after year. Costs rise by about 10 percent annually, which according to Bohinj mayor Jože Sodja puts great pressure on the municipal budget.
They will start charging at the beginning of the summer season. The all-day ticket price, valid for 24 hours from first activation on the bus, will be two euros. Free rides remain for children up to 14 years old and Bohinj residents, who will need to apply for a special card.
Some concerns emerged upon adopting the proposal. Boštjan Mencinger, president of the Bohinj Tourist Association, worries that after paid tickets are introduced, there won't be real financial incentive for visitors to park at cheaper, more remote lots.
Some councilors also warned about logistical issues the planned ticket sales method could bring visitors, as passengers won't be able to buy them on the bus but must get them beforehand, either at tourist info centers (only three in Bohinj) or via web app.
Bohinj mayor Sodja said this summer will be a test period. Based on analysis of this year's events, they will propose new measures or adjustments if needed in the future.
