I read that in old times (before WWII) red knee socks were a privilege or status symbol of climbers. If I remember correctly, it was mentioned in the book about Jože Čop.

Back then we didn't have money for red knee socks yet, but we could roam the hills alone, without adult supervision. Usually for 3 or 4 days, sometimes more.
