We started a bit lower from the customs house because we were a bit "too heavy" for further nasmeh

The path to the hut is super, there was just the right amount of new snow to cover the previous icy base.

A bit below the summit there are a couple of icy sections, but only one is a bit more demanding. Recommend at least small crampons, though we went over without any problem even without. Back completely dry =)

On top cloudy, wind blowing strong, 10m ahead from the summit (from the approach direction) nice shelter, almost no wind nasmeh

We met quite a few people, though some turned back because of wind/cold. Given the weather, the bigger crowd probably also due to King Matjaž castles on Mitnek meadow. Great combination, really!

If there had been sun too, it would have been kitschy =)

On Saturday 29.1.2011 we started from Mitnik towards Dom na Peci on foot, as you can't go further than Mitnik by car. The path to the hut is trodden. From the hut towards Kordeževa glava the path is icy in some sections, with small snowdrifts. However with proper winter gear - poles or crampons you can reach the summit without problems. At the summit it was quite cold and windy, fog deprived us of the wonderful view.

Good luck to all and lots of enjoyment in hiking!

Yesterday's ascent from the old guard post past the hut to the summit. Road drivable. On the path to the hut some snow, locally a bit icy. From the hut to the summit quite a lot of snow but path well trodden (summit unfortunately in fog). And some photos for illustration.

Best, Borut

Some photos from yesterday's visit to Peca. The weather was sunny, only at the summit we had bad luck with fog. The path is well passable, a bit icy in a couple of places, which didn't pose problems.

Today start from Mitnik, hut on Peca, via protected path to Peca summit. The day was wonderful. Return via easy path. Crampons recommended. lp

Today I was at the top too, definitely recommend crampons, otherwise you'll end up on your ass sooner or later.

Today, on 12.02.2011 the hikers from PD Mislinja took part in the 23rd winter Matjaž March on Peca (2126 m). Starting point was at the guardhouse above Mežica, goal Mitnek - Podpeča, at King Matjaž's castles.
Weather served us excellently, not too cold, pleasantly warm in the sun.

Warning! The path from guardhouse to hut, and from hut to the very top is very icy, so microspikes and crampons highly recommended.

This year's march officially had only 150 people, much less than previous years, last year canceled due to avalanches, year before almost 1000 people.

Strange that there were so few of you with such weather and on such a mountain. Congratulations to all who keep the image of King Matjaž alive.

On Friday over morning coffee at the info point of Mountaineering Club Ivanec the suggestion came up that we could go on an ascent to Peca on Sunday, 13.2.2011. It was accepted within one minute, regardless of weather conditions, which btw were supposed to be good. Too bad we didn't know you had the traditional winter Matjaž march the day before, otherwise we would have joined you, but next year we will. We started the trip on Sunday morning at 5. Up to the hut on Peca stable weather accompanied us (cloudy but no wind or precipitation). We hoped it would hold till the end of the ascent. Upon arriving at the hut, we decided to do the ascent via the "very demanding path," eek counting on such stable weather to remain. However, the Alps showed their fickle nature again, and halfway up the bad weather started catching up with us. At the top icy wind and snow blizzard greeted us, so we stayed very briefly - I only shot a couple of pics, as the snow was freezing my lens. jezen Regardless of the weather, it was a nicely spent day in your Alps. nasmeh

Nice, nice.
Shame there's no real winter. There should be over 1 m of snow up there now.
