Mangrtska koča

First time this year towards Mangart. Not quite to the top but almost. With a bike you can get to the parking under Mali Vrh; further under Rdeča skala there's still quite some snow, the same behind the last tunnel – with the bike you need to walk about ten meters. I rode to the hut, a tiny stop and then back to the valley. The road is in pretty good shape, but you need to be a little careful in the tunnels (rocks). Photos not the best, made with the phone.

First time this year by bike to Mangart Saddle. Unfortunately the weather was quite nasty: foggy, cold and windy. The path is not fully cleared yet, drivable to the parking area under Mali vrh, good two km below the top. There about 20 meters on foot through snow; from there drivable to the top, but lots of stones on the road under Rdeča skala.
Still some snow on the summit1
It was quite unpleasant on the summit2

Never been to Mangart saddle yet and I'm curious if the road is really that steep as in the penultimate picture or just optical illusion. Haven't seen such a steep section yet. Last year I was to Vršič by bike, this year I'd like to go to Mangart saddle.

My assessment is that the road is quite "gentle" - compared to Vršič. I think the Italians made a very nice road which is long but therefore more gentle.

About a kilometer from the new bridge there's a nasty section (very steep about 100m), then it's no longer very steep but tiring because it's a long climb. On the serpentines you can rest a bit, that on the picture is optical illusion, not that steep, but before the last tunnel you're already tired and the road seems damn steep!!!velik nasmeh

For my taste it's more tiring to get from Log pod Mangartom to Strmca nasmehthan to bike the Mangart road which climbs constantly but moderately. True the steepest is the lower part but nothing worse. Of course it all depends on the cyclist's fitness.

If someone wants to go to Mangart Saddle on footpath, I suggest starting from Belopeška lakes. Follow signs to bivak Nogara; from bivak only easy path to saddle, otherwise the whole path is partially demanding marked, probably most drive to Bovec side and drive to Mangart saddle by car, unfortunately no description for path from Belopeška lakes to saddle. There's also one path over Plazje; this is used in winter and also in summer for descent.

I'd say this: I've ridden this climb many times the road to Mangart really isn't some bogeyman it scares more with its kilometers but has its quite steep sections and for my abilities above the lake to Mangart pasture (past the new part) definitely the hardest part from the last tunnel to the turnoff for the hut and under Rdeča skala 2 km below the top these sections really aren't long but quite demanding. Of course everyone sees it according to their abilities. But for me definitely one of the most beautiful roads in the Alps.

In Log pod Mangartom, there are quite a few marked parking places - and even more convenient ones... Parking is definitely no problem...

there are only two real parking spots:
-if you drive wildly back, park at the cemetery
-if you drive moderately, then guesthouse Mangrt, where on return you order a radlervelik nasmeh

A few years ago my big wish was to cycle at least once to the top of the Vršič pass. Later the wish changed to cycling from Bovec to Mangart Saddle. So that it would not remain just a wish, today with my son, who is now almost adult, we decided to finally do this route. Not just one but both at once.
In the morning we drove to Kranjska Gora with two half-disassembled bikes in the car, unloaded and assembled them there into original state. The wife went ahead with the car and waited for us at approximately agreed spots. First the ascent to Vršič awaited us, which went without problems. A short break followed so that we could cool off a bit, put on warmer clothes, and in the morning chill, almost frost, descended towards the Trenta valley and leisurely cycled to Bovec. There we took off warm clothes as the road to Log pod Mangartom started ascending again. It became even steeper towards Strmec village. The gradient eased only occasionally up to the saddle, consequently the breaks up there became more frequent. Despite tiring cycling we gathered enough strength at the end so that all three of us went to climb the Via Italiana ferrata on Mangart.
If you do not happen to have lights mounted on the bike, I warmly recommend at least a headlamp for driving through the little tunnels, since meeting cars in the dark is not the safest nor most pleasant.
Otherwise nice weather with just the right freshness for such a feat.
Safe travels whether by bike or on foot.

Pohodni,
Congratulations to both. The fifth picture is the second tunnel, which is also the longest.
