Yesterday I was up there. I went via ferrata to the bivouac and then towards Mangart. Weather at the top was super (cloudy with gusts of wind). Quite a bit of traffic. No traces of snow anywhere. The path is strenuous, and drags seeeeeee.....

Today on Mangart, quite crowded on Slovenian and even more back on Italian. Snow on Slovenian route just a sample and even that off path. Weather gorgeous, so after return to saddle no hurry to hot valley

Does anyone know the condition on Via Italiani (from Bivacco Nogaro)? I mean, is it open? Snow etc... Also please directions to start of Mangart road from Zagreb-Ljubljana direction.... Thanks.

As for the road: several options, but probably best is from Ljubljana to Jesenice and Kranjska Gora, then at Rateče cross to Italy, after that Tarvisio and Predel, at Predel back to Slovenia, and a km after border turn left to Mangart road. That's it.

Yes, I got it now. But I see that from Kranjska Gora some road no. 206 leads. It says Trenta and later goes along Soča. Exits to Kal-Karitnica. What do you think? Also, does anyone have info on the condition of Mangart road. Given that it's not closed due to snow. Can you reach the end? Greetings.

Mangart road is, at least by my info, ok to the top. And about that road 206 - that's the road over Vršič. Can go there too, road is very panoramic and probably nicer, but over Predel is faster.

I'm preparing for Mangart from Belopeški lakes - climbing path 517a (from the saddle I've been several times in both directions). I often see comments that there's an "easier" path 517 or 516 .... ??? For descent I always prefer easier paths. Any info welcome.

From the Belopeška Lakes, two paths lead: over Plazje (return) and towards bivouac Nogara, where at the bivouac the ferrata branches off to the left, to the right is an easy marked path to the saddle, from the Belopeška Lakes to the saddle past the bivouac is a partially difficult path, marked, past the waterfall.....

I'm wondering if the Italian path is exposed or precipitous anywhere? We would go with small children.

Depends how much these small kids have already hiked? under one "bridge" there is a drop but not directly under the path..and there are also some small chains on the path.. Definitely high mountain movement knowledge is needed.

How small? The path is not really demanding for someone who has already done something more challenging, for kids though I think it can be tiring. I met ten-year-olds there myself, maybe even younger, so definitely doable. The path goes like this - up to the first pegs there is no danger, then follows maybe a kilometer of wire and pegs that don't lead through sheer areas, then scree starts which can be awkward but not really exposed to drops, the last part of the path on grassy slope which is a bit more exposed, but the path is easy and in pretty good condition. Based on my own experiences the decision is yours, but definitely don't tackle it if you haven't done some high mountain ascent together before. Helmets on your heads and self-belay kit if needed...

I read that thread already before my question. It's about an 8-year-old who likes to trip while walking. So I was interested if he can trip somewhere down.

I don't know how many times more, but the basis is to familiarize yourself with the mountain, Mihelič's guide Julijske Alpe is the Holy Scripture and whoever doesn't take time to read it in mountains simply has no business there. Such questions are downright stupid. Mangart simply isn't Šmarna gora, although fatal accidents happened there too. Mangart has taken over 30 lives already, I was there for several, not nice to watch and collect broken bodies, especially not children. Of course you can trip and of course there are sheer areas, especially on northern Italian side as they reach far down to Stara Planina above Belopeška Lakes. Otherwise even a few-meter fall can be fatal and no need to fly 200-300 meters deep to get killed.

Therefore it would be advisable to provide proper protection. Of course on this path too a slip and longer fall can happen (you know how it is - a few meters are enough). Good luck! edit: I see that IgorZlodej almost simultaneously answered your question.

@IgorZlodej they are not stupid questions. We have quite some experience in the mountains already. On Peč, Raduha, Grintovec etc. one can hardly trip anywhere, so we were just curious how it is with Mangart. @juhejnaprej thanks for the good answer without moralizing.
