Košutnikov Turn

Has anyone been there recently (after the storms) in this area? What's the road (gravel) like to the parking under Dolga Njiva.

On Friday, 19.7.2019 at Košutnikov Turn. Up the western, down the eastern. Weather didn't follow the forecast and it was really ideal for hiking. Not a single viper on the path. They probably got scared of me. velik nasmeh

A little more and I'll see how they are in Austria

The flower garden is very colorful, wonderful!

The weather is fine with the neighbors too.

No viper anywhere, although the sun was scorching the rocks.

From Zgornje Dolge Njive my peak is almost unnoticeable (second from the left)

What would you like then, huh - they ask me ;-)

Those who were waiting for me made good use of the sun rays.

Up the direct path, down eastern. The path is dry. At the top short sleeves.

I was at Košutnikov Turn today, before that at Ostrvi.
Up western, down eastern.
Path without special features, except some fallen spruces which have been lying on the path for quite a while.
I was early, so first at the parking lot. On return there were 50 cars there. At the hut many young families with small children, and lots of cyclists. Weather super and strudels still good.

Second a black Audi. I thought we'd meet at Tolsti, but at the top realized you could hardly go anywhere else but the Turn. When I descended, your car was gone, others so many I barely "made it" to the valley zavijanje z očmi

Today it finally came up. Last year we didn't choose this peak because of the road closure and long detour. But the mountain waited for us.
The road is still long to the starting point, gravel from Jelendol onwards (didn't know that), but it's quite nice and drivable without issues even with my small Honda. velik nasmeh

No excessive crowds today at P under the pasture.

Up we went western, down eastern, followed the path without problem though first time here. Timings hold. On the path itself met no one, except multitude of flowers and one snake. Weather was favorable to us, strong sun mostly covered by clouds that obscured distant views... But at least nothing fell. Most people at the top from the climbing path from Austrian side, then at the hut on Dolga Njiva. Strudels we'll treat ourselves another time, we'll definitely return here, also for the views! nasmeh

This end of Košuta we like because no crowds. For many years I only knew Kofce and surrounding peaks... Recommend!

VanSims 28.7.2020 The post is missing the essence that is important for us female hikers. We know that this ascent is more demanding and not everyone attempts it, but it could have been five years ago or yesterday, right! So the missing essence is the date! "georgija" wrote nicely and obviously had no problems, and the date is here somewhere. No trace of removed via ferratas etc.

In the post I mentioned it was June. Which June, since this year has long passed, is not so important anymore. mežikanje

It seemed more important to emphasize again, also since in this section more hiking approaches to this mountain are mentioned, that this approach is not for everyone.

Regarding dismantling of via ferratas, I think everyone understands the emoticons. They were relocating the via ferrata around 2007 according to my info, when I wasn't even regularly going to mountains, let alone such tours. nasmeh

Today a nice circular trail to Košutnikov turn. Up the western path, down the eastern path. On the path there is lots of scree, mud and some fallen trees and very slippery. Great caution needed, especially on descent.

A bit before Košutnik started at some 1100 m where logging is going on. Further snow soon appears on the road anyway. Up the western path, got quite high without winter gear. Then used it for short snowfield and steep grass. Above the saddle left winter gear, as it is possible to the top without. At the top it was a bit windy but not cold. Descended to the saddle to watch the sunset and then my own way with ice axe and crampons, on steep grass. Lower took off crampons. At the bigger "bend" saw higher several chamois "running", so went back up not to get a stone, put crampons on again and on steep grass to the lower path. But not for long, soon left the path and my way with winter gear to the pasture as lower in the spruce forest still snow and a bit icy. Took off crampons before the snowy parking, so that I washed them. And back to "house or Košutnik.

My young friend did the winter one, I did a typical early autumn foggy one. No Julians, so I went here. Up via the western ridge. This one is a bit shorter than the eastern ridge one, but more demanding. Both very demanding. Already before the hut at Lower Long Pasture it turns left. Soon we step over the steps and soon grass changes to a rockier slope. The 10m rock jump would be trouble down especially today because the rocks were wet from fog. Then up steep rocky slope to slender summit ridge and on it partly exposed to main top. Today top almost hidden in fog, windy too, so quickly down eastern ridge. This access as descent easier - less demanding. Here descend grassy and rocky slope. Soon to steep crumbly eastern gully. Before that down steep grassy slope to border ridge. Steepness finally eases and we cross forest part of path and to pastures of Upper Long Pasture. To hut another 15 min walk. Livestock taken to valley. Hut open for hikers on weekend.

At the parking lot there were only mushroom pickers.

Almost the end of the tree line - that's somewhere around 1800 m.

No orientation problems, as the path is well marked and visible.

Below the summit, some scrambling on rocks awaits us.

Strong wind on the summit, so only two photos and down the other path.

The path on the eastern ridge is well marked but equally demanding.

I have arrived at the pasture Zgornja Dolga njiva.

At the edge of the pasture is this marker for the start of the path across the eastern ridge, but no other markers anywhere, at least I didn't see any.

Greeting - on the pasture I'm a bit lonely, everyone left, only me and my colleague, pigs and poultry remained.

Some Saturday glimpses from the path to Košutnikov turn. Up western, descent eastern path. On western path a bit below ridge top another steep snowfield on path. Eastern path damaged by avalanches at several spots.

Koschutahouse - Koschutnikturn.
Through forest, over scree, via ÖTK climbing path to Koschutnikturm. Same path back.

Technically most demanding path I've been on, but I have quite some experience... Scree extremely nasty, climbing quite steep and airy...

But done!

Toll still 5€...

Late afternoon to Košutnikov Turn, road ok, up direct path, little snow in gully. Up steep grass with ice axe aid. Descended snowfield and back to valley.
