Kompotela, Mokrica, Košutna

Today, the last hike in the Krvavec end in the snow-free season. I was still missing Kompotela, Mokrica and Košutna. As always, I drive to the Krvavec alpine pasture Jezerce, where there is a large parking lot. Surprisingly, it is quite occupied today and soon I figured out that PD Komenda - youth section, if I understood correctly, has a hike to Vrh Korena via Koren alpine pasture. I don't know if they really made it up there, as the weather was quite unfavorable - fog. From Jezerce alpine pasture to Kriška planina and there, right at the start of the alpine pasture, I turn right onto Romanova pot, which leads to Kompotela. The path descends past the hunting hut and soon we are at Koren alpine pasture. Here, about a year ago, a new Koča Koren was built. Behind the hut, I turn left onto the path that goes directly to Kompotela, the right one goes to Košutna alpine pasture. The path is nice in good weather, today of course it was a bit slippery on wet rocks. Suddenly we find ourselves under Vrh Korena, where to the left it is a half hour to the peak. We continue straight to the summit of Kompotela. Kompotela has a stamp and a box with a logbook. Sadly, someone has taken the lid of the box somewhere and the book is all soaked. From there I descend on a half-hour hike down to Mokrica. Here everything is in place - stamp, box with logbook and of course the lid too. From here one is supposed to get there via Markova ravnina to Medvedova cave. I didn't notice any path anywhere. But there was dense fog and nothing could be seen five meters ahead. I return back to Kompotela and go along the left path towards Košutna alpine pasture. Soon a path branches off to the left to Košutna. I was up there many years ago and went directly through the scrub from the hut on Košutna alpine pasture. Now the path is marked and up there a stamp and also a box with logbook await me. Then to Košutna alpine pasture, where at the wooden chapel I pull the wish bell. I also step to the hut and there a large herd of cattle with a horse at the head surprises me - there was no one in the hut. Then descent along the cables and I am at Koren alpine pasture. From Koren alpine pasture the path is the same as on the ascent. Walking is about five to six hours in both directions. In summer in good weather it is a pleasant, undemanding tour.

This time Kompotela a bit of a detour: from Markova ravnina along the hunting path towards Ovčarija to the hunting hut and further past the turnoffs to Medvedja jama and planina Ovčarija (and Mokrica) up Debelem hrib until the path got lost in the scree. A short trail led me left down to pathless grasses on the long south grassy slopes of Košutna. I traversed the grasses about 500m to the west to the hunting passage in the rocky and scree-covered ridge, marked with a cross (a constructed hunting path that also crosses the same slopes runs about 300 meters lower!). With a bit of easier scrambling I climbed up to the notch with the cross and continued the path to planina Košutna on a sometimes widely cut, sometimes barely visible trail.

Since at least one peak must be done, I went to Kompotela and back, then along the lower, unmarked and unprotected path (protection not needed) to the gully below planina Koren. Along the hunting trail I descended the gully down to the marked path Krvavec - Kamniška Bistrica, which I reached at Spodnja Fratina below Dedec 1575m. From there along the marked path to Markova ravnina.

Conditions wonderful, sunny, grassy pathless areas dry and although the grasses are quite steep they are passable without difficulty with a little care. On distinctly shady slopes the path is lightly covered with rime or ice.

Yes, Tomaž11, as you predicted at the meeting, we had somewhat worse visibility according to your looks, but that didn't affect enjoyment in hundreds of small encounters on our path at all.

Today I took a similar route as above. Path to hunting hut well traceable, though fallen trees obstruct passages and path finding.
From hunting hut onward path following much worse, probably few people go there. Had similar problems as above, but after wandering up and down the ridge finally found trodden passage to Ovčarija, suspect somewhere above Medvedja cave.
On Sidartina map from there unmarked trail drawn, but couldn't find it, so went direct up the torrent towards ridge between Mokrica and Kompotele and at top direct to marked path.
On marked to Mokrica, Kompotele, Košutna and Košutna highland, where vainly tried to find unmarked passage past Dedec. So continued to Koren highland.
There decided for unmarked path direct to Za vrati, above it also unmarked path to Dedec, which according to map joins before it the one from Košutna highland. Continued on marked down.
Shortly after entering marked met a Frenchman interested in wild animals heading unmarked to Memorial park in Kamniška Bistrica, but got lost on Markova ravnina towards Koren. Accompanied him to Bistrica.

Today again Krvavec tour - Jezerce highland, Kriška highland, Koren highland, Košutna highland, Košutna, Kompotela, Mokrica and descent through pathless high grasses to Medvedja or Mokriška cave.

First time descended from Mokrica to abandoned Ovčarija highland to Kamniška cave. Tried years ago, but soon gave up and back to Mokrica top. First check if grass dry. It was, so tackled locally steep descent through high grasses. Started right side and halfway crossed to left and down left side quite far in grassy valley. Didn't see cave at all. Thought gone too far, so crossed steep meadows again and somehow up middle. Finally spotted it. Now just find path that before cave turns above it, bypasses that rocks and leads to cave from below. Years ago visited cave from Kamniška Bistrica and same came to it on upper path and even missed path a bit below cave and lots of bushwhacking. This time hit the path and viewed the cave. Back on path coming up from Kamniška Bistrica. Path especially in high grasses poorly visible. Seems few hikers. Someone marked it through scrub though. Locally quite steep drop. Below hits marked path from Kamniška Bistrica to Kompotela. Quickly at hunting hut below Kriška highland. Midway small clear brook.

I'd like to visit these peaks (Kompotela, Mokrica, Košutna, Vrh Korena, Zvoh etc), what do you suggest, where to start (Kriška Planina or Jezerce), to cover all beauties of this described path and miss nothing? To make a loop... Thanks for the answer. Val.

Starting point is Planina Jezarce, up to there is an asphalt road, further car driving is prohibited. Beautiful loop tour, we went first via the lower variant and returned along the ridge over Krvavec. Good luck.

Today on Kompotela from Planina Jezerce on Krvavec. Wonderful day, initially not much snow, maybe 10 cm, towards the top a bit more, especially in drifts up to 1 m. The path was trodden to the last junction. Snow is dry - powder, crampons not needed, but useful to have gaiters and of course poles. Back the same way. Gorgeous day.velik nasmeh

Today on Kompotela and Vrh Korena. No wind and towards noon also in the sun. From Jezerce to pl. Koren minimal snow, further on gradually a bit more... up to about 15 cm. Otherwise as Janez wrote, paths trodden.

Today on Kompotela. To Planina Koren snow just a sample, towards Kompotela the blanket thickens. On inflated parts you can sink to your knees. Path is trodden but icy in some places. Snow is dry, didn't take crampons out of the backpack.

Yesterday (Sunday, April 17) from Markova ravn by hunting path to Planina Ovčarija. To Mokrica, Kompotela, summit and Planina Košutna, down to Dedec and further to the starting point.

From Markova ravn a transverse hunting path leads, which disappears a bit on the cleared landslide, but just keep going. It meets the hunting path from the quarry about a hundred elevation meters before the rock barrier, where this path forks. I went the left, steeper variant. I hardly found the junction, as the path completely disappears in places there, and on the remains full of slippery leaves and small roots. From the fixed cable onwards no more problems.

From the hunting hut at about 1410m to Planina Ovčarija there are three paths: Over the ridge (Debeli hrib), past Medvedja jama and the lower path. I don't know why I chose the lower one, which branches at the first bend. Some snow sections I successfully crossed without crampons (snow frozen underneath, on top a few cm of slushy, nasty). Only from the path along the ridge of Mokrica did I see how heavily snowed the area of both upper paths is. In front of Medvedova jama there is a pile of snow at least a meter high, if not more. A few hundred meters traverse of steep forest in unreliable snow would be a special story, which I avoided only by luck.

The path to Mokrica is hardly visible anymore, but comfortably brought me to the ridge over overly warm and dry grasses. On the north side of the ridge between Kompotela and Mokrica it's a completely different picture. Winter, with sparse dwarf pines sticking out of the snow. On the ridge wind was blowing, indeterminate directions. Seemed to me once from the north, then again from the south. Towards Mokrica you have to descend a bit, for a while I wandered on the boundary between dwarf pines and snow, then put on crampons.

The path to Kompotela was completely snowed, between dwarf pines it often broke through dangerously. On the slope below the summit I sank to my waist into a hole between snow and ground. Just a little missing, and I would have lost balance and injured myself with crampons.

To the summit of Košutna and further to Planina Košutna the snow was sun-exposed, hardly sinking. Anyway, on this rugged, hilly plateau world it had already taken quite a bit. The pasture itself is south enough to be already bare, no wind, warm and friendly. Last time I was here, I saw somewhere a plaque in memory of a 13-year-old boy buried by an avalanche 60 years ago. This time I didn't find it.

At the interesting ramp, where to the right leads the passage to Planina Koren, I went down the path between dwarf pines. For a while nothing special, then the path crosses a short but very steep grassy slope. A few steps further it descends into a gully and then down, where you have to climb a bit over a short drop (nothing serious). On the steep slope with stepped grassy ledges below the drop, hardly visible, it leads to the saddle by Dedec (1550 m). There it meets the path coming from the hunting hut below Debeli hrib.

From Dedec to the marked path another 10 minutes or so, further to the car at Markova ravn half an hour. Wouldn't philosophize. But crampons, ice axe, gaiters and sunscreen are definitely imperative for the tour in such conditions these days. Some more photos of the conditions I posted on Modrina neba.
The junction to the left variant of the hunting path needs to be known.1
