Kepa

Today to Kepa from Erjavčev Rovt (Dovje). On the return climbed one more peak in the ridge and then to Gubno. At the Koritec junction spotted Dovška Baba and via saddle Mlinca jumped to it too. Since it's there.

Conditions actually ideal, just in the morning the ground above 1700m frozen, in pathless areas where I occasionally walked it was hard to find firm footing. No winter gear needed. Despite hazy clouds saw far, seems even to Dolomites (Vezzana in Pale di San Martino, Marmolada). Correct me if wrong.

Alone at top, on the way met two Austrians, two ladies, two girls with dog, two smartly dressed mountain runners and one cyclist from Baba.

About 300 m above parking deciduous forest area. Leaves on path slippery hiding rocks and roots, annoying on descent.
In the foreground a smaller peak, then Dovška Mala Kepa (2077m) and in the background Kepa, taken from the slope of Gubno.1
View from the top of Kepa towards Austria.2
The peak left of the center could be Cima della Vezzana, to the right of it the mountain with snow on top is Marmolada.3
The border sign plate has slipped a bit down the pole.4
Gubno from the small peak in front of it, in between is a notch with secured path.5
View from Gubno towards the Julian Alps. Krma, Kot, the valley behind Cmír, Vrata are clearly visible.6
Someone has propped up Dovška Baba so it doesn't collapse.7

At a certain point on Dovške Babe, between Gubni and Kurjek, the cross from the summit of Kepa is visible as a white dot.9

@j. thanks again for info on conditions in notch under Dovška Mala Kepa. We met under Baba nasmeh

True. Views were top! For Marmolada not 100% sure it was visible.

Wow, from the car in Završnica to Rute among the brothers 50 km and about 4500m ascent and roughly as much descent! Sincere congratulations, Nino!

FB - Landslide on the road where it was already repaired.

Landslide in Belca from the other side - all the loaded scree threatens to collapse into the depths again, so don't risk it and don't walk across the landslide (from the tracks I'd say some are playing with their fate)

Majda Gašperin - Is this where they repaired it once before?

Zvone Miklič - Yes, above the sawmill in Belca or just before the tunnel.

Based on the above pictures, you only have Erjavčev rovt left. If the road is bad, there's a marked path from Dovje. Or try from Srednji vrh over Grajšca and along the ridge over Jepca. It's quite long though.

Today from PD Račica, I headed to Kepa from the direction of Bertina hut / Bertahütte, 1527 m, of course the car stays at 900m altitude, nasmeh. We chose the path over the northeast ridge, which is very scenic, but crumbly in the upper part. Weather spared us, some clouds at times that didn't bother us. Quite a few hikers up to Kepa today. For descent via path 680 to Bertahütte, which still has a lot of snowfields, ice axe recommended in hand.

The above report lured me to visit Kepa from this side today too. I also parked in the same place. velik nasmeh
Ascent along the northeast ridge is not a marked path, although red dots guide you in the direction all the way. After the entry part that warms you up quite a bit, a traverse to the left follows, which was at least for me the key part of the ascent. Later you follow varied, partly rocky terrain and climb right along the ridge crest to the lower summit of Kepa.
Initially foggy weather developed into a really nice sunny day later.nasmeh
Descent along marked path no. 680, where today with my colleague we didn't need winter gear.
Best regards
At Bertahütte Kepa shows itself to us for the first time.1

Yesterday I went to Kepa from Erjavčev rovt. I was worried about the road, based on Ljubica Š.'s comment that you need an off-road vehicle. But it wasn't necessary, as the road is in very good condition. Water has slightly eroded it in some places, but there was no danger of getting stuck anywhere. The safety gear on the path is also in excellent condition. Great caution is needed when crossing crumbly slopes, and a helmet isn't superfluous.

Yesterday the drive to Iličev rovt was a real odyssey due to the Ironman event and consequently closed roads. Given the weather that was rather sour in the early hours, I only gained with a later start. The weather slowly started showing a friendlier face and I climbed up the NE ridge in the sun. From the top I descended to the saddle and continued along the W ridge of Dovška Mala Kepa, from there descended via the E ridge to the marked path and returned via the saddle to Berta hut and back to the valley.
Conditions good, rock on Kepa ridge a bit more crumbly than on its lower neighbor. I agree with garmont that the traverse left is 'annoying' due to crumblyness, but one can protect oneself, as there are some pegs in the wall.

Kepa and Gubno - Erjavčev rovt...Road is passable as usual. In the last part a bit more potholes, no water. Safety gear ok, on the path over rocks lots of sand. Stones fly too, helmet not superfluous. Otherwise oh and ah at the top, great views and little visitors.nasmeh

With Tadej we do some easier-also exploratory tours together every now and then. This time we headed from the Austrian side to the third highest peak in Karavanke-to Kepa, Austrian Mittagskogel-2143m. Ziljaks call it Jepa, Rožani Kum-interesting, right. As known, Karavanke are divided into about nine groups. Kepa is the main carrier of the group. Named Group of Kepa and western Karavanke ridge. It's the only group of Karavanke lying in three countries. The central ridge of the group is divided into several subgroups, one is subgroup Kepa. The entire Kepa group includes known peaks like Vošca, Trupejevo and Maloško poldne, both Bavhi, Kresišče.

So we drive through Ljubelj tunnel to Austria. A bit harder, at least for me, to describe how to reach the starting point on these Austrian roads. At the end we turn left in front of some hotel. Should be Borovec-Austrian Woroutz-here are signs for Kepa. We drive past the hamlet Kopank. At the first junction turn right onto forest road-marked. We drive through the forest on this gravel road for quite a few kilometers. Since the road is in poor condition we didn't go to the end to the starting point-called Iljčev rut. Beyond the starting point the road to Bertahütte is closed, we walked about twenty minutes. On the return we came back on this road. From this parking lot along path 680, which takes us right to the top of Kepa. From start to Berta hut about one hour walk. Berta hut is a nice log cabin, located on the northwest edge of the Borovščica pasture (Ferlachealm), or on the same-named saddle under the southern slopes of Komnica (Ferlachspitze-1739m). Managed by the section of Austrian Alpine Association from Villach. From the hut two hours walk to the top. The path is nicely laid out. Nicely equipped with wooden steps. We go over several crumbly gullies-also wire ropes help us. Over these gullies helmet use recommended. On the left side continuously crumbly wall of Dovška Mala Kepa. After about one and a half hours we reach the saddle between Kepas, where the state border is and a steep ascent awaits to the top of Kepa to the large three-meter cross. Stamp is a bit more left of the cross-sadly the logbook in the box is full-torn and wet. A bit lower right another cross. View from Kepa is one of the best in Karavanke, unfortunately just at our arrival to the top fog came from somewhere and stole the view from us.

I'm interested if the footpath from Belca along the Belca stream valley (under the landslide) is safe. Given what happened last year, the road for cars won't be passable for a very long time.
